As I was driving home today I noticed that a lot of the construction on Highway 4 here in Pittsburg CA has a relief image of the city logo being placed on the overpass and soundwalls and such.

my graphic arts teacher in high school designed this logo. its been used since the mid 70s here.

Posted Image

(the circle with the anchor and the hills)

so whats the logo for your hometown? like it? hate it?

we have quite a few (in theory) here in Highland where I live currently:

Here's one for the Chamber of Commerce (I did this one!)

Posted Image

Its 2 C's (Chamber of Commerce) that makes an H! When faxed or converted to one color...it resembles a country road.

This one represents Highland as a whole...its a swiss sheild and a US sheild...big swiss influence here, even though its mostly Germans and Catholics now...

Posted Image

They also have a downtown one, but I can't find it though....

Is it just me or is that a train heading straight for the river? :D and what is that yellow thing in the sky?

slapshot

Posted June 10, 2005 - 08:12

The train has magical flying ability to cross the river on its own, when there's a perfectly good bridge behind it.

Lowell is known for a couple things: the textile industry (during the heyday of mills in the mid 1800s) and its canals.

I think that yellow thing is a cornucopia. Not sure. Might just be a dirty cloud spilling from one of the smokestacks of the mills.

Got this from the City of Ottawa's site.

Basically, it's an 'O' with a stylized maple leaf on it's left. The blue symbolizes the Ottawa and Rideau rivers, as well as the Rideau canal. The green is symbolic of our parks and the copper roofs of some of our older buildings.

Posted Image
The focal point of the logo is a stylized O formed by three streamers which come together, symbolizing unity and harmony and working together towards a common goal. It suggests energy and motion, reflecting the vibrancy of our city as well as its economic and business strengths - a city that's innovative and on the leading edge.

The shape of the streamers is reminiscent of a maple leaf and a hint of local architecture, while the colours blue and green - most frequently chosen by the public - remind us of the parks, green space and waterways that surround us.

Posted Image
The stylized O design is the centrepiece of the new flag. The look is simple, but festive. When it is flying, the feeling of vibrant motion is very apparent.

The flag's design uses the blue and green colours chosen to represent the new city. The dynamic use of colour is a direct reflection of how the citizens feel about their city. The large blue is symbolic of the rivers and waterways that are a part of life in the Ottawa area. The large green areas speak to our quality of life and the abundance of green space in the region.

First, where I live:
Posted Image

That's City of Quilmes (pronounce "Keel-mesh"), Province of Buenos Aires (Good Airs), Argentina (Argentum Land = Silver Land). It's over the River Plate so you see the river shore. At right, there is a fire, it was for use as a "lighttower" guiding the ships that entered the estuary of the River Plate.
But Quilmes is named after the Indians Quilmes who battled hardly against Spaniards but lost the war near the current Bolivia. So the vindictive Spaniards sent them exiliated to the shores of the humid River Plate where they extinguished gradually.

Today Quilmes is best known for its beer, that is the logo:
Posted Image
Website: www.quilmes.com.ar

Well, as Swiss, I descend from an antique family originary from:
Posted Image

Heimiswil (pronounce "J-i-miss-Bill"), canton of Bern (Bär = bear), Switzerland (maybe was Schwaab, "Swabia" mispronouced). It's a very, very small village. Perhaps there are almost 50 souls. :hockeysmiley:
The seal is about a tree with fruits over a gelid mount with three promontories. Big thing! Never a good story there. :D

The best thing there are... the Alps to be contemplate.

Yes, thats exactly it I pretty much guarantee.

I think they could have picked an angle that better represented what the structure is 'spost to look like (a sailboat) but its a very cool building on the inside and on the outside. They don't have much in the way of famous pieces of artwork, but for a city that is very much in the realm of design (I'd put Milwaukee right up there with Chicago and New York in terms of Graphic Design Studios) and art, its a pretty neat place.

Until I saw this thread, I didn't even know we had a logo. Our town seal is on the town flag, which is the woman who founded our town in 1683 sharing a meal with the local Indians. But checking the web site, I found this:
Posted Image
There isn't much need to elaborate: the buildings represent the downtown area, which has been preserved in a colonial theme (the N.J. State Seal was designed here, George Washington slept here, and so on). The "L" is a tree, because we have a lot of them.
It's a shame - they neglected 2 of the things I liked about my town. One, the woman who wrote the screenplay for the "Halloween" movies lived here (the town's name in the movies was Haddonfield, but it wasn't in Jersey). Two, years ago, a dinosaur skeleton was found that, at the time was the most complete skeleton found in one site. But the logo makes no reference to Michael Myers or dinosaurs. Go figure - I'd love to see a remake of this logo with a serial killer and dinosaur on it!

We're the City of the Red Roses or something, to explain he rose on there. We have a "War of the Roses" every year with high school football players from York(White Rose) and Lancaster(Red). Most people would probly think our logo's a horse and buggy.

I guess I should mention that I'm from Lancaster, but I go to college in West Chester...yes, the West Chester where Bam Margera lives.

Posted Image
Here's the WCU logo...I have no idea what the town logo is.

That's pretty cool. Here in South Carolina, we have York (where I live), Chester, and Lancaster counties...named after the counties in Pennsylvania. Lancaster here is also the "Red Rose City."

They're probably named after the British dynasties, as ours are. The War of the Roses...the historical one...was York vs. Lancaster, with each having a different colored rose as their symbol. That's why Lancaster, PA...and SC, as you said, are the Red Rose City. York is the White Rose city here, maybe it is in SC too. I have no idea what Chester is historically, I'm not a history major.

At the top of the shield is a five point crown, the trademark of Hallmark Cards Inc. Directly below the crown, within the shield, is a pile of cannon balls with a keg of gunpowder on each side, representing the Hazard Powder Company, a manufacturer of gunpowder during the Civil War. A three-bladed propeller is on either side of the powder kegs symbolizing the Crestline Boat Company, a subsidiary of the Bigelow Sanford Company. The Bigelow Sanford Company trademark, a weaver's knot tied by a pair of hands on a pedestal, represents the nation's largest carpet manufacturing company at the time. A tobacco plant flanks each side of the trademark depicting the Tobacco Valley in which the town is located. A star on each side of the shield, centered within the double circles and the border, stands for the Colony of Massachusetts and the Colony of Connecticut.

The best part about my town is that the actual seal 6 feet wide and made out of LEGO's.

Sorry guys/gals, I was writing this and it turned out to be a bit of a history lesson!

Lichfield-England

Posted Image

The heraldic shield was in use by the late 17th century. Its heraldic description is' Or, a cross square pierced ermine, five chevronells, gules' The Supporters on either side are a later addition and a privilege granted by the College of Heralds only to royalty and very ancient families and corporations. On the dexter (right side, looking from behind) is St Chad, one of the patron saints of the Cathedral; on the sinister side is a robed master of St Mary's Guild.

The arms are ancient, the red chevrons on gold are probably from the arms of the Stafford family, Dukes of Buckingham and Earls of Stafford. Ermine is an ancient emblem of honour and purity.
The supporters refer to the See and City, St Chad became the first Bishop of Lichfield in 669.

The motto "Salve, magna parens", meaning 'Hail, great mother' is Samuel Johnson's greeting to Lichfield in his Dictionary, and is a tribute to Lichfield as both his native city and the mother city of the Kingdom of Mercia.

City Seal

Posted Image

The right to use a common seal was granted by the Charter of 1548. The seal portrays three dismembered bodies, depicting the legend of a massacre of Christians at Lichfield during the Roman occupation. The seal, as remodelled in 1688, is still used by the Council today.

City council's crest:

Posted Image

RMS: Vert an eagle displayed wings inverted perched on a Stafford knot Or and charged on the breast with three arrows barbs downwards two in saltire and one in pale proper banded gules on a chief Or a pale ermine between two chevrons gules.

CREST: Out of a coronet composed of four ears of wheat and as many acorns leaved set alternately upon a rim Or, a demi stag sable charged on the shoulder with a sun in splendour gold, mantled vert doubled Or.

The gold Stafford knot on a green background represents rural Staffordshire. The Roman eagle, also in gold, refers to the important Roman historical associations of the district (e.g. Watling Street, Ryknild Street and Letocetum, which gave its name to Lichfield). The eagle is also common to the arms of the Paget and Biddulph families, and was also the emblem of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, who died at Kings Bromley in 1057. The sheaf of arrows is from the arms of the Peel family of Drayton, to which belonged Sir Robert Peel. The chief is derived from the arms of the Borough of Lichfield, it consists of a panel of ermine between two panels of gold bearing the red chevron of the Staffords, which is the basis of the County Arms and also appears in the arms of the Lane family of Kings Bromley.

The special coronet of ears of wheat and acorns is of a type formerly assigned to Rural District Councils. The black stag alludes to the coalfields in the Cannock Chase area. On its shoulder is the sun, which, as the source of light and power, is common to the arms of the National Coal Board and the Central Electricity Generating Authority.

My hometown of Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador. The building on the right is(or was) our paper mill and the three dots are the smoestack that stood next to it. The airplane represents the U.S. Air Force Base and International Airport that pretty much got the town started, the left has trees for the forests that surround the town on the 3 sides. The green under the trees and mill represent the mountains that are also on 2 sides of the town, I know the blue is for the runway at the airport(one of the longest in Canada and capable of landing the space shuttle), I'm not sure but one of the blue also represents the brooks, ponds and bay that surround the town.

Field - The surface of a shield upon which the charges or bearings (objects which appear within the shield) are blazoned.

Sable - The tincture Black. In engraving it is represented by perpendicular and horizontal lines crossed. Also Diamond and Saturn.

Fess or fesse - One of the ordinaries, a strip or band placed horizontally across the shield, occupying one-third of the field.

Chequay - A field divided into small squares, of different tinctures, resembling a chess board. Usually made up of seven squares in the top line, and in depth according to the length of the shield. Yinz is a second-person plural used almost exclusively in Pittsburgh and the surrounding region in the Western Pennsylvania of the United States. It was derived from the Scottish term "you ones". It may also be referred to or spelled as "yunz", "you'uns" or "ynz". It is part of a local dialect referred to as Pittsburgh English or "Pittsburghese".

Yinz is synonymous with "you all" or "y'all" in the Southern United States. Like "y'all", yinz's place as Pittsburgh's most famous regionalism makes it both a badge of pride and a way to show self-deprecation. For example, a group of Pittsburgh area political cheerleaders call themselves "Yinz Cheer" and an area literary magazine is The New Yinzer, a take-off of The New Yorker. The traditional blue collar Pittsburgher is often referred to as a "Yinzer". Although it is considered by many native Pittsburghers to be a mild pejorative, like calling someone a hick, or a rube.

Guess that explains it...

...hearing that still irks the hell outta me, though. But I guess that's no different than half the words that come out of mouth either totally confusing or irking the folks up here in Picksburgh. Ah well...

If you were to ever to go to Pensacola, you'd do just like everyone else who goes there and make a b-line STRAIGHT TO THE BEACHES. :P Just make sure ain't no hurricane coming when/if you do go down there. Oh--and take a sec and stop by the museaum of Naval Aviation if you get a chance, not to mention Fort Barrancas (one of the nation's oldest surviving forts), as well as Joe Patti Seafood, if you like seafood. Best, freshest, biggest variety of seafood you'll find ANYWHERE. Damn near anything you can think of you'll find in there. And it's about five minutes from the 3-mile bridge that leads to those beach islands. Check it out!

Most municipal logos are boring as hell, but I love the logo for the City of Phoenix.
Apparently it's a popular logo, I have recently seen it on New Era hats and other stuff

Adorning all of our buses, etc. I'm not sure how I feel about ours. I'm kind of obliged to like it, and the symbolism is neat, but it looks a little forced, and simple.

Nice to see another local member though :D
