The Lions unveiled their new jerseys for captains today. Each of the five captain jerseys will have a C patch with four stars underneath. For each year that the player is a captain, a star will be gold. Horribly ugly idea.

Good Idea, bad execution. I like that they have captains like the NHL, but the stars are stupid.

What if the player is a captain for more than 4 years?

well...considering it's the Lions, I'm pretty sure they wont be around the team 4 years.... I don't know about this. It's not a bad gesture to have a captain's patch, but five, even in football is bit excessive.

A simple C would do fine. I'd rather see a contrasting color dot sticker on the back of the helmet to signify captains if you insist on doing it (much like the lime green headset stickers).

I think on UniWatch it was reported that all teams were doing this. I agree with most, it's a good idea but badly executed. I think it is going to be hard to see the C let alone if a star is colored in or not. I think the best idea would be to put a C on the back of the helmet.

I always liked the subtle way the bucs identified their captains with the "netting" on the shoulders.

The Bears just anounced their captains and they have five as well. They have two offense, two defense, and one special teams. There weren't any pictures of the captain's jerseys, though.

Under NFL rules a captain is to be on the field at all times, so 5 sounds about right actually.

I don't mind this idea, actually... as long as the patch is standardized across all teams.

I really don't understand the white/empty stars thing on the Captains' patches. What, if the captain gets a second year, are we expected to believe they strip the patch off the old jersey, color in the white star with magic marker, and sew it onto the new season's jersey? Besides, on TV, every captain's going to look like he has four stars of an indistinct color on his patch.

And I never knew about the texture/netting on the Bucs' captains' jerseys. That is incredibly subtle, and quite classy. Just another reason to love the Creamsicles.
