DeFrank's NFL Redesign

Ok, so I really have not had time to work on these in about two weeks now, but I'm starting up again this weekend with a revision of the Vikings. I really am lost however on what I should do! I don't want an overload of purple like the pre 2006 set, but the current modern look is terrible.

So, should there be a traditional striping? Modern? A sort of minimal/logo incorporating striping? What do you guys think?

I REALLY want your opinions on these so I can move onto my next couple of projects: fixing and revising the Steelers, then starting up the Eagles and Cardinals

My take on the vikings is not to get too caught up in retro. For example, the current horn is better than the old horn for the helmet. The 1980s uniforms look very 1980s. Make sure to have yellow outlines on the numbers and (though this is primarily reflective of my bias) use a block number font.

My favorite uniform for the Vikes is the white late 1990s/early 2000s. Now that those shoulder stripes can only be dashes, it won't look as good, but I'd like to see them try to work that in on BOTH uniforms. I always wanted the switch to shoulder stripes on the purple.

I also would support purple pants with the white jersey.

No yellow pants, as the division-rival packer have 'em.

I have been working on them and I came up with a pretty traditional striping that reflects the horn logo in my opinion. It is a wide white stripe with yellow edges on either side (for purple jerseys) and the same is on the pants. I do have white with purple pants. I would rather go traditional with these guys, but I do agree that the idea of "retro" isn't good. Some teams I plan on going modern however.

A perfect Vikings uniform to me would be this design and striping:

In the modern colors, especially the helmet:

No piping mess, great design, but matching colors and a solid update.

Right well I hope to have it up at like 6 or 7 tonight. My illustrator is working and I have finished the jerseys save the helmet and team name because photoshop hasn't been working. I'm going to figure it out tonight... Once I get those in I just need to make the away alt. and upload. The design is traditional in in my opinion, very Viking. It isn't the same as the throwbacks, but it's a traditional striping. Current colors and helmet.

EDIT:

THE MAIN POST WAS SOMEHOW DELETED. I can't believe that! UGH! Now I'm going to have to repost everything in the right format... What a nightmare!!

I disagree 100%. as a Vikings fan, the new colors are the worst part of their atrocious new look. as dumb as the jerseys are, they would be 10 ten times better with the old purple and non-sparkly helmet.

I always love to hear the opinions of the teams fans. I can play around with the other purple tonight

Switch the colors on the home collar and this is a perfect concept. The sleeve striping is better suited for the ever-shrinking uniforms than their throwback striping. It's simple, but it works.

Ooo you're right! Ill get that fixed.

I'm going to be leaving for India on Sunday and I won't be back until March 31st so I've got to get the Steelers done. I might be able to downloaad a photoshop trial on my moms mac so I can keep working. Ill try to fix the color tonight. That shouldn't need an update message.

Victruth- what? I think that this concept was pretty much my own. I chose the striping and... everything else.

I think what he's getting at is you keep coming on here asking for "second" opinions about concepts you haven't posted yet. In order for there to be a second opinion there needs to be a first one and when it comes to creative things like this that first opinion needs to be YOURS.

If what you do is come on for every team and ask what you think others should do all you're really doing is offering an artworking service for other peoples ideas. Asking for feedback and advice is great, it builds confidence and will improve your work no end, but it seems there have been times during this thread when you've been asking for peoples input long before we've seen your ideas and that's putting the cart before the horse. You need to show others what you think works before you ask for feedback and input, otherwise as Vic says what you get is a concept which is a combination of lots of other peoples ideas and as anyone with any experience will tell you design by committee usually turns out to be a disaster.

Trust your gut, come up with an initial idea you think will work and that you can justify (always have a reason for every design decision you make) then let people help you improve your idea.

ps, I dunno about anyone else I'd also much rather have the concept images in the actual post, having to click links to get to them is just tiresome.

Ya think so?

I might just do that for the concepts in the post, and keep the first page as links...

As for the asking opinions, I'm not gunna get any more! And its not like I follow everything people say. Or anything. I chose the current purple and a striping pattern all my own. So, ill try to do better about that, but I don't totally understand what I'm doing wrong.

It's not that you're doing anything wrong per se, it's more that you're kinda missing out on a great opportunity to do exactly what YOU want to do for no other reason than YOU want to do it.

You'll never get that kind of freedom in the real creative world. There are always constraints put on you by clients and some of them are utterly laughable and can drain dam near all the fun out of a project. But here you dont have that. Here YOU have total creative control and you should embrace it and have fun with it! Do what you want to do first and foremost is what I'm saying and then ask what people think of it. The more you put of YOU into a project the more YOU will improve as a designer when people give feedback on what you've created.

The truth is that the feedback people here give you can help you improve as a designer, but at the same time these are only concepts, they'll never reach production, and so what if some faceless person you've never met on a message board thinks version 3 is better than version 4? You're never going to please everyone anyway. At the end of the day the person that really matters is YOU.

Use YOUR instincts, show us YOUR ideas from the get go and then let the feedback help YOU get better. But be SELFISH show us what YOU want to show us, cos you'll not get an opportunity like that anywhere else but here is what i'm saying.

Exactly what I was getting at. You can't worry about pleasing everyone or a certain team's fans.

You have a valuable resource in CCSLC to hone your skills and creativity, but you cant do that by going "what should I do?"

I can't think of another way to put it, bud. Again, if I wanna see something a certain way, I can create it myself. I cannot, though, create DeFrank's ideas.

Alright. I see what you guys are saying now. I am very excited about working on my next teams. I think I'm gunna leave the Steelers for now. I will start the Eagles soon. I have creative ideas for that team so I will work on those and present. Thanks for the tips guys, I appreciate it. Now what do you think about the Vikings?

Bump...

I was able to work on the Steelers on the plane ride to Singapore, but I still need to get fonts and wordmarks in there. I really like this set, and the fact that I didn't ask for opinions should please victruth a lot. I hope to have them soon, but internet now costs money so I don't have all the time in the world. After that I hope to start the Eagles, and when I get home redo my Chargers.

Team Five-

Pittsburgh Steelers (Version 2)

With these I really wanted to scrap my old ideas (somewhere in December) and just start fresh. I ditched the idea of making them around the throwbacks, and went for a combo of their current look and some simplified elements. I kept the pants the same, it's simple and evokes the Steelers. I made the jersey much simpler, but with the gold collar and bottom of sleeves it doesn't seem boring. I simplified the logo to remove the red and blue, and turned the grey outline gold. I also used the Dolphins font. C&C

Just so you know, your missing the left shoulder (in player perspective) TV Number on the jersey on the Vikings home jersey.

Right, I did see that after I posted them. I left home a few days later and will be gone until the 31st, and can only work on a new team (as all my files are on my desktop, not my mom's laptop where I did the Steelers). I plan on making a little update to the Vikings concerning the collar, and I will put that in as well.

Being from Pittsburgh, what do you think about the Steeler concepts?
