    THIS THIS THIS

As @andrewharrington said, Hatch Show Print is within spitting distance of Bridgestone Arena. And yet for whatever reason, the Predators did not reveal the sweater at HSP or mention them by name in any press/social release. They didn't even use a country track for the initial unveiling video! It's like if the Nets had released their City Editions last season without mentioning Basquiat, or the Sounders not playing any Hendrix when they revealed their purple kit.

Correct. The effect looks okay on the "PrEDs" collar mark, but it does not translate to a cut-and-sewn crest. HSP style is more than just goofy font. They overlay colors (like that Ringo poster), always look somewhat distressed due to the wood blocks, and they very, very, VERY rarely print on a primarily dark background like navy blue. The Preds have the perfect base in their gold for a HSP-inspired sweater, and they decide now is the time to attempt the navy jersey a large number of fans have wanted as a regular alt for a decade.

Would've been better off sublimating HSP-style words and graphics into the gold stripe and doing a two-color tiger head or guitar pick for the crest. This solid color block approach just does not translate at all.

I swear, this freaking team makes it so hard to be a fan sometimes. I'm just glad it doesn't say "SMasH VegAS."

Since when is a poster a good idea for a jersey?

    Did I say that?

Someone said they don’t mix different letters in the same word when setting wood type, which is false.

But what the heck, I’ll bite: a poster is a good idea for a jersey when your city is well known for its show posters and the most famous show poster print shop on Earth is located a half-block from your front steps (inside the Country Music HOF & Museum lobby).

Yeah, at least with the fisherman they were trying to be original and were creative with the logo & striping, It was obviously a jarring change from what they wore before, which is the main reason it was so hated.

The Preds just took their Winter Classic design, made the base blue, and tried to come up with a more "bold" wordmark for the chest stripe.

The idea was to reference vintage country music posters like this with the font:

    spacer.png

I get the thinking, but the execution is awful. Yes, the posters used mis-matching fonts, but not in the same word.

Might want to do the research on that again, and use actual Hatch prints as reference lol.

Ignore the odd Vegas color matchup, but like this is an awesome color scheme to start with if they want to go full do-over and different, (While still having a reason with the OG Ducks uniforms)

And FWIW, I like the webbed D logo, but just the logo part, not the wordmark on the jersey.

It could look great, but I think the University of Oregon would have a case to oppose it as a strong west coast sports brand that’s been using green and gold for decades.

Disney has a streaming service, needs content, and we're at the point in the nostalgia timeline where a 90s revival is about due. Seems about the right time to dust off that franchise.

The new show doesn't even use the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim logo.

I'm not sure about that. If it's true then it's got a pretty big asterisk after it. Go to the more hockey-crazed parts of the world (where the NHL just so happens to have teams) and I'm not certain the Mighty Ducks logo is more recognized than a classic NHL logo.

    I don't buy that, sorry.

Yes, the logo was designed for the NHL team, but it's not so clear cut. Eisner wore a D-5 Ducks jersey from the first movie to the announcement for the team and the team in the movies wore the NHL uniforms for the first and second movies.

While the duck goalie mask and sticks logo was designed for the NHL team there's very clearly some strong corporate synergy going on between the movies and team branding, and there was from day one until the day Disney sold the team.

Denying that very clear fact because of a fear that some other fan will make fun of your team from "coming from a Disney movie" is dumb. They're going to do that anyway. Lean into it, don't deny the obvious.

Hey, if Disney wants to try a revival series out on their streaming platform because they need content and this is an IP they own, all the power to them.

The problem I have with this "the Mighty Ducks logo is one of the most iconic logos in all of hockey" talk is that it mostly comes from my generation- the people who were kids who watched the original movies, were marketed to by the NHL team with the demographically-aimed unis, and maybe even watched the 90s cartoon (their agent is a dead ringer for ECW-era Paul Heyman).

And this putting of this pop culture logo up on a pedestal just rings a bit like the general arrested development of my generation, where so many of us can't quite let go of what we were enamoured by as kids.

I'm hardly one to talk, I have a SEGA Genesis and a few shelves worth of games for it. I'm not immune to nostalgia.

But be it comic book movies rehashing the same stuff, the purveyors of plastic knack trying to sell us early 30-somethings a cheap statue of some character from some franchise we're obsessed with, or just a general cultural stagnation where if it's not a BRAND it's not worth growing in literature, tv, or film... I donno. Someone in my generation gushing about the Mighty Ducks logo because it was in a movie they liked when we were all ten just rubs me the wrong way.

Again, not saying it’s a great logo or the general populace’s perpetual infatuation with 20-30 year old fashion is a good thing, but you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think it’s iconic to a huge number of people. I specified “continentally, if not globally” because I knew you’d bring up the international angle. 😛

The duck mask has appeared on a third jersey, an anniversary jersey, and a Reverse Retro jersey in the past five years. It’s not retired.

I’d also argue the Indians’ brand transcends Major League because of how established it was by the time the movie came out. 🤷‍♂️

    Gotta agree with you.
It's a logo that came about during the 90s at the height of targeted marketing. I know, I was the target! It's the same sort of thing that brought us the Raptors' dribbling dinosaur.

It's part of my generation's "childhood," but is it on the same level as the Habs' CH or the Chief Black Hawk head? No. I wouldn't say so.

I'm not sure the Mighty Ducks movies are beloved outside of my generation. I don't have data to back this up, but I do work with teenagers for a living so... 🤷‍♂️

And I'm pretty sure that most younger people today aren't that aware of those movies. Or even aware that's where the name/logo come from. It's just the old Ducks logo to them.

The Mighty Ducks movies weren't anything groundbreaking either. They were hockey's version of the "misfit kids sport team" movie that got recycled over and over. And hey that's cool, I enjoyed them but...pop culture touchstone? Eh....

I didn’t say they were good movies, but it always was and still remains a popular media franchise with continental, if not global recognition. Otherwise, Disney wouldn’t have wasted its time creating a whole new series out of it.

Heck, I’d argue that there are a lot of people who recognize the duck mask logo over many traditional hockey brands, and it’s just a natural result of there being more people interested in kids movies than there are serious hockey fans.

Not even regarding Utah, Jazz is supposed to a type of music that invokes emotion and soul. Not something black and white represents.  This just feels like the easy way out. There is no creativity or branding involved here it’s just wiping the slate clean.

For what it’s worth, I combed through a random list of the 100 best album covers, and 29 of them had black and white artwork as the focal point with little or no color.

The first logo DID do one thing better: A proper attempt at representation of jaguar rosettes (spots). The current one looks more leopard-like — dare I say even cheetah-esque, due to the solid dots, albeit in larger form — than jaguar.

Jaguars typically have singular spots on the head and front quarters. The rosettes generally start forming around the shoulder area and continue down the midsection/back.

Eh, I feel like mashing the best of both together produces a more desirable result, personally. There's bits of both that are good; the improved shark on the newer one, the lack of an unnecessary curve on the triangle in the original.

I was never fan of the curved triangle until I realized it makes the silhouette look like a shark tooth.

They did, but I believe it was something that Reebok/Adidas had claimed they couldn't replicate. The Knights had originally planned on releasing the gold jersey a year earlier, but Foley didn't like the way the shade of gold turned out, so they waited until Adidas could figure out the dazzle fabric.

That was just the gold body fabric. It was used for stripes and trim long before it was developed for the body.

I sure do enjoy discussing what is and isn't a race on a forum dedicated to sports logos.

    Thanks overly racialized culture!

Anywaaaay, I think Seattle's brand is really good, but someone pointed out to me how much thicker the outline on their main logo is, and now I can't unsee it. Its not bad per se, but it makes it look off when put next to the logos of other teams.

That’s how it goes when you have to contain a giant eyeball inside the outline.

ALL it is is a Photoshop. It looks like a creation in a more modern format than what was typical of the time. The Nikespeak, website, presentation all look good, but I don't buy that this was a real consideration by the Eagles.

Maybe some of the pros here could comment on whether they would be allowed to share a work product like this after the fact.

It depends. In my opinion, it’s poor form to show work like this when the paint is still wet, so to speak, but now, ten years after the fact, when most of the people involved are probably not even still working for their respective organizations, I think it’s fine.

But here’s a tip for stuff like this: look at who’s posting and their credentials.

“I started my career in digital retail, then moved agency side for a couple years. After that I joined the NFL league office in New York where I spent 10 years working on the brand in a wide range of capacities. During that time, the thing that brought me the most joy was seeing the excitement from the fans when we would release new team branding and during our events when they would take photos of our work.”

    Real.

Seems like a missed opportunity, but I seem to remember Adidas wanted the RR to rotate on a regular basis.

Any insight into this @andrewharrington? That Yotes RR would be a nice candidate for a third. Curious if it's true that teams are flat out not allowed to promote a retro to an alt.

Actually, it’s the opposite. RR was intended to be a very limited, exclusive program so the NHL doesn’t start becoming the NBA when it comes to uniforms.

Doesn’t mean the league couldn’t accommodate a team that really wanted to bring one back as a third, but I’d be surprised if you see the original RR collection on the ice again.

Well the matchup should be interesting. I guess it will kinda-sorta be like the 2020 Winter Classic, where Dallas went with the faux leather breezers and gloves, and a style from the 20’s, and Nashville went with a 50’s fauxback. Only this game will be throwing it back to the 30’s and 60’s...

I think it’s a missed opportunity for the game though. The Wild went full out for the St. Paul Saints fauxback look, and the Blues easily could have done a Flyers fauxback, especially since I believe the teams did play each other at one point.

So then blue breezers and faux leather gloves for the Blues?

The Dallas Winter Classic was based on 1940s uniforms (the only decade the Texans existed, I believe), not 1920s.

Can we talk about the Winter Classic logo itself?

    2022-WINTER-CLASSIC-LOGO-PATCH-SPORTSLOG

It is the first logo since 2008, the first Winter Classic, to not have anything relating to the city/state/stadium the game is in. Nothing tells you the logo is for a game in Minnesota other than the word Minnesota. Id have liked something similar to the 2014 MLB all star game logo.

A lake shoveled clean for ice skating feels very Minnesota to me. I heard they have, like, ten thousand of those things.

Unpopular opinion...  This "Old Tyme Hockey" dress-up fad is beyond played out...  And the red alternate from 2003 did it much better.  Everything about this design looks awkwardly proportioned & claustrophobic and the elbow patches & tiny shoulder yokes are superfluous.  Not a fan.

Awkwardly proportioned, claustrophobic, and superfluous… much like the inspiration?

Yikes it would have looked 100x better without the stripe on top, really hope adidas isn’t forcing teams to make ugly jersey and force them to have the stripe on top

Why would adidas be forcing teams to add a stripe to the top of their jerseys? This stuff is straight from Twin Cities history books…

Football jerseys made with aeoready are from recycled materials. Fleece was making from plastic bottles before it became trendy. Seriously, polyester made from recycled maetrials is nothing new no matter if it's 100% or 5% that is not worth to mention from companies.

Again, Aeroready and Climalite are not specific fabrics. They are tech names that can be applied to any fabric that qualifies based on their moisture and airflow properties. No connection to recycled materials one way or the other. These are the first league-wide hockey jerseys we’ve made using recycled materials for the body fabric, thread, and crest materials, other than the Parley All-Star jerseys.
