  1. NHL 2018-19

I wouldn't be opposed to this but I'd hope that it's not just this logo as it existed at the turn of the century. I hope they'd put some effort into cleaning it up and making it a little more modern and dynamic. Maybe using the shield motif on the heritage jersey shoulder patch as a container for a re-designed version.
  2. NHL 2018-19

You barely see the centurion logo inside the CTC (except on large fixed murals and such) or around town. The =O= is everywhere. Even the game pucks use the =O= logo and have done so all season. The change is pretty much official at this point. I think the only wildcard is that they may use red instead of black as the main colour on a heritage inspired primary (like the red NHL 100 Classic jersey). It feels like they're going to leave the black primaries with Belleville and make the parent club red. I claim no special insight, just gut feeling.
  3. NHL 2018-19

You barely see the centurion logo in Ottawa anymore. The switch to =O= is pretty much a done deal. You don't even see it much in the Canadian Tire Centre. Now this could just be an impression developed because they're pushing the merch from the NHL 100 game everywhere but I get the distinct feeling they may not simply promote the black alternates (with actual white) but go with predominantly red instead. I may well be wrong on that, but it's an impression that's hard to ignore as you walk around town.
  4. The whole Roman theme has always felt forced and disconnected from Ottawa and Canada. While I have jerseys and t-shirts with that logo (wearing one now) I've never felt it was where the brand should be. Nor do I think they should just bring the heritage jersey to full time status without modifications. - Heritage jersey is fine, just use actual white. - Take the O logo and place the shield motif from the shoulder logo behind it with laurel leaves sublimated in the O or on the shield. - Take the Peace Tower/Maple Leaf shoulder logo from the early 2000's alt and clean it up and modernize it for the shoulders. Maybe bring back the "Est. MDCCCXCIV" from the original should logo into the new one - I also like the silver idea in the new sweater (even though it's a hot mess) so maybe swap the gold for silver and trim the logos (chest and shoulder) accordingly.
  5. It's a very popular logo in Ottawa and the heritage jersey is seen more than the standard jerseys around town. Tom Anselmi has said he was open to a rebrand of the team when he came in as president last winter, but too late for the Adidas switchover. The Roman imagery has never really gone over well around here since it was introduced in 1991. People embrace it because it's the hometown team, but it's never been a brand that people *love*. Going full heritage has been really popular around these parts. And they went that road with Belleville this year. While I'm pretty sure this is where they're going, I kind of hope they'd do a little more with it before it becomes final. Maybe merging the eras by sublimating laurel leaves inside the O or something like that.
  6. NHL 2017-18

I've also advocated merging the themes and replacing the box background with the shield shape from the shoulder patch on the =O= jerseys and then wrapping it with the gold laurel leaf motif. Then, as suggested in the thread, outlining the O itself in gold. My drawing talent is not that strong so all I have is a mental image that I can't convert to a picture.
  7. NHL 2017-18

Tom Anselmi has said he's looking at re-branding the Senators but he was installed as president too late to make changes for the upcoming season. Everything was done by then. He's said he's open to the =O= or the roman imagery or a whole new brand for the team that incorporates the others, or even a whole new direction. Who knows where they'll go. The article I read said he'd like to launch the rebrand in conjunction with moving to Lebreton Flats, but that's still years away. Perhaps they'll do something for 2018-2019 or 2019-2020.
  8. NHL 2017-18

Yes. But just barely. They moved to Jersey about a year or so after I first started watching hockey. And even at that, in the nascent days of cable, I probably only saw them once or twice when they played Montreal or Toronto on a Saturday night because all we got were Toronto HNIC on CBC English and Montreal HNIC on CBC French. I'm old.
  9. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

While much nicer than the front-facing Roman they use now, if they re-brand I'd be much happier if they just dropped the Roman theme altogether. The =O= is great and has more potential to become a timeless mark, but I'm not yet sure if I want it as the full-time primary. I'd really like to see someone think outside the box on a Senators identity that doesn't use any of the Roman imagery or anything that has come before. Start fresh as though they were a new team.

New Ottawa Senators president mulling a logo change An article in today's Ottawa Citizen drops that new team president Tom Anselmi is considering a logo change. Obviously too late for next season but... let the speculation roll...
  11. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

The earliest they could move into a new arena, if everything falls into place perfectly (which it never does), would be 2021. I'd say 2023-2027 is more likely knowing how slowly things work in Ottawa with the 4 levels of bureaucracy one has to go through to get anything done. The mere fact that the city and the NCC have been trying to re-develop Lebreton Flats since 1965 with absolutely no action says to me that, if it even happens (far from a sure thing), it'll be closer to 2027 or later (even 2030) at least. Let's be clear, all the Senators got was an opportunity to negotiate with the NCC to develop the property. They still need to line up the money, the investors, draw up blueprints, get approvals, etc, etc, etc. It's still going to be a long haul. All that to say, I sure hope we're not stuck with those uniforms for another 5, 10, or even 15 years before a change happens.
  12. St.Louis using Rams name in the CFL

Baltimore tried this in the 90's with their CFL team. They were called the "Colts". Then the "CFL Colts", then the "CFL's", then the "Stallions". Then they became the Montreal Alouettes. Long story short. It would not work out well for them.
  13. "Circle K" Refresh

I'm going to miss the Mac's owl. So it feels like a downgrade to me. BUT, I call the new Circle K logo an upgrade over the previous one so... Mac's > New Circle K > Old Circle K
  14. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

The senschirp.ca website had an article recently with a Sens rebrand by the guy who designed the heritage jersey. I thought it was quite good although I'm not a fan of the mish-mash shoulder patch. Full article here.
  15. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

I have the very first Sens game on VHS recorded off CBC. I know I remember John Ziegler was at center ice and presented Bruce Firestone with a decree from the NHL that made the Senators a continuation of the original franchise that had been "in hibernation" for 60 years. It's all semantics anyway, but that's why they hung those banners. They actually went up on opening night after that ceremony. Unfortunately, we're in the process of moving right now so that tape is in a box somewhere behind me (or in our storage unit) so I won't find it again until probably June. I'll be more than happy to digitize and YouTube it then.
  16. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

Fair enough. My eyes are pretty bad to begin with (you should see the prescription for my glasses) so in the couple of seasons I spent in the Sens press box in the early 2000's I totally relied on the numbers on the back to make out who was doing what. I never used the sleeve numbers so I tend to ignore them. But I also wasn't calling games, I was working as a reporter for a couple of sports websites calling in goals and period summaries and the like.
  17. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

I've often thought they could make a great primary out of the =O= on top of the shield logo shape from the third jersey shoulder patch and inlay a slight laurel wreath motif along the edges of the shield (maybe even use that for the shot of gold) to combine all the eras together. I keep meaning to mock up that idea but I never do.
  18. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

True, but you're also not often reading sleeve numbers from the stands (unless you're in the 100's or have bionic eyes) or the press box. You're reading the big white numbers on the back and they stood out.
  19. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

The reason the red numbers only lasted the one season was because the red on black was very hard to read from the stands or the press box. Mostly, I've heard from a very good source who worked in the press box back then, it was the play-by-play guys who really pushed them to change the numbers to white.
  20. 2016-17 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

Everybody remembers this monstrosity, right? From the Melnyk presser this morning, the logo appears to have been tweaked...
  21. What if Quebec had voted to separate from Canada?

But Quebec wasn't really seeking outright independence. They were seeking "sovereignty association". That basically meant that they would be independent for the purposes of having federal laws apply to them but the national museums would still exist in Quebec and they would have continued to use the Canadian dollar (or, worst case, adopted the US dollar). The borders would also have never been closed or required a passport. The status they were seeking was more that of a sovereign province more than an independent nation. Basically exempting themselves from all the responsibilities of partaking in a national legislature (taxes, federal laws, etc) while still getting to reap the benefits of it.
  22. 2015-16 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

There's a whole celebration year in Ottawa in 2017, it being the 150th anniversary of Canada itself. Releasing the branding a season early to tie in to the whole "Ottawa 2017" campaign is smart. The logo is crap, though.
  23. 2015-16 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

The Ottawa Senators will be unveiling their 25th anniversary logo today at 1pm as per the media Twitter. https://twitter.com/Media_Sens/status/618069213199106048
  24. Unpopular Opinions

I agree, but it's still the best logo they've ever had which is probably why it gets so much (baffling) love. The Canucks need to blow it all up and start from scratch again. But since that logo is so (unbelievably) beloved I don't see them ever being able to escape it.
  25. 2015-16 NHL Uniform and Logo Changes

Sorry, I can't agree on this being the best Leafs logo ever for one simple reason. The text is off-center. It drives me absolutely batty every time I see it. Fix the text and then I'll agree. Until then, burn it. At least the Ballard Leaf doesn't have that problem. Yes, "Maple Leafs" is centered to "Toronto", but the O butting up to the side of the logo like that with the blank space on the left side just...no. Centered or not, the logo is still vastly superior to the generic and vaguely corporate looking Ballard Leaf. I didn't even notice the text was off centered until you pointed it out. The text kills that logo. Fix it and I agree with you. They could even widen it a little lengthwise to make slotting in the text easier. Hell, use that leaf (a little wider) with the text from the Ballard Leaf. Done.
