RE: MLS and early "Nikespeak"
Check out the descriptions of the original MLS team branding:
MLS at 20: Epic original branding, logos for the league's first 10 teams
So yeah, this kind of stuff has been going on for a while. But notice it's not just Nike who developed the complex descriptions.

Oh I'm quite familiar. I recall the same thing with the NHL Reebok takeover back in the day. And every unveiling since quite frankly.
But there seems to be an extra level of hostility or something surrounding this. Folks are behaving like they're entitled to a leak. Overanalyze every last detail you want, but this business of demanding information is weird. I suppose that's what a society hellbent on instant gratification has caused.

I don't think I've ever seen a collective group of folks THIS impatient for a uniform unveiling. This is a whole new level of impatience.
WHY HAVEN'T THERE BEEN ANY LEAKS! IT MUST NOT REALLY BE HAPPENING SINCE WE HAVEN'T SEEN IT BEFORE WE WERE TOLD WE'D SEE IT!
Anyway, I think the new uniforms will be great.

I really hate when the special event caps are so dramatically different than the normal game caps. Make the NY logo pink, but keep the Yankees cap navy. Hell, do what ever you want with the logo, but keep the base color the same. Even adding a pink or blue bill is fine. But wearing light gray caps is so disruptive.
I'd prefer they don't acknowledge Mother's Day or Father's Day at all, but if they must, just add a simple ribbon to the jerseys.

Texas should definitely build a new identity out of that CC uniform. So much more interesting than their current identity.

I don't mean to be insensitive to anyone's beliefs, but an entire major sports league certainly should not alter its entire schedule structure on account of one group's religion. Either every religion gets to influence this or none of them do, and I don't see MLB altering schedules to align with any other religion's days of rest. Just ask Sandy Koufax.

I love when we get close to a reveal on this site because someone will spitball something like "this color scheme would look good for the cardinals"
Which immediately is followed by five pages of people treating the post like a leak and genuinely debating whether they'll wear uniforms inspired by catholic cardinals.
Haha this is exactly what happens.
Someone will say "I'd like to see yellow facemasks to represent the yellow beak of the Cardinal logo." And then within a few pages people are arguing about how the Cardinals will look like the Chiefs. And later someone else will be like "It was confirmed a few pages back that the Cardinals are switching to yellow facemasks."

I actually love the gray jersey. But I wish they'd swap the pants: gray with the black jersey and black with the gray jersey.

Not to mention that Rangers jersey is trash and should be replaced ASAP. Who rendered that script? Rangers belong in arched western lettering, regardless of what Nolan Ryan wore when he was there.

I see it as looking toward the future while the numbers keep the nod to the past
Exactly. The numbers carry on the visual language of past Twins uniforms. Not everything has to be so matchy-matchy all the time.

Two things from Twins-Astros today:
- Those 'Twin Cities' uniforms are gorgeous
- The Astros paired their orange jerseys with the orange-billed cap. They haven't worn that cap much recently, so it might now be getting paired with the orange jersey instead of it's original purpose as a road cap
I couldn't stop noticing the white piping next to the navy on the cream uniforms. What a strange, completely unnecessary choice. It became one of those things where I didn't want to notice it but the more I thought about it the more I kept noticing it.

Rockies wearing white pants with the city connect jerseys tonight.
Word is the Rockies plan to wear white pants with these jerseys for day games and green pants for night games. (Not counting tonight's game.)

I love that the Rays modified the throwback to fit in with their current identity and become a full time alternate. Not everything has to be a direct throwback. There's so many colors in that uniform that it doesn't need to rely on black as the base color. In fact, I think navy compliments the gradient word mark better.

Found some more photos of the Orioles CC merchandise. Not sure why the second one is grey, but it's probably just for merchandise, so I wouldn't think too hard about it. Not sure if the font is a nod to the short-lived home jersey from the 60's or some other distinct block font, but as @bowld pointed out, this whole identity is going to be heavily inspired by Charles Village.
There's a line of fashion hats popping up that are the same style:

Am I the only one who really likes the rebrand? Font and all? It feels like a fitting, modern update with a throwback-y touch.
I adore it. I've read every post in this thread and really don't understand the hate. The "I" isn't great. Otherwise it's solid. People will always complain.

I love the Flyers contrasting nameplates. It's a fun little quirk. Most of y'all are so damn rigid about every little thing that's out of the ordinary.

I disagree. The navy cap was always going to be the primary, especially since it features the logo in the same colors as the primary logo. Also, the navy cap has a slight edge over the orange cap from 1965 through 1993 as the primary cap of choice when the H-star was previously the primary logo. At least they wear the orange jersey fairly often so there is still plenty of orange featured. I do prefer an orange cap with the home whites though as it is a more balanced look.
Astros primary cap history:
1965-1970: navy
1971-1982: orange (navy caps worn on the road from 80-82)
1983-1993: navy
1994 they switched to the navy and gold identity.
There's no denying the navy caps have been worn more than the orange caps historically, but that doesn't mean it's the better option. I'd love to see orange caps at home and navy caps on the road.

I don’t like the Astros current look and absolutely HATE the generic looking clip art star and H combo they use. By far one of the most boring looks in the entire league. But when they first released the current set, I was really hoping the Astros were going to embrace orange more and use it in a similar fashion to how the Cardinals and/or Phillies used red. But instead they used it only a handful of times and reverted back to the boring navy caps instead.
The initial look from 2013 at the time of unveiling gave us hope!
But then they went heavy on the navy

As @FiddySicks said above, this should be the primary look for the Astros. Really wish that orange-based look stuck around.

I thought I saw somewhere that the 4+1 rule meant since a uniform was a permanent feature in a club’s wardrobe, they get the full treatment from manufacturers with jerseys, caps (think 59FIFTY, 9TWENTY, and snapbacks), player tees, hoodies, etc. Basically a full line of merchandise. Whereas a special event jersey (throwback or Negro League for a single series) doesn’t get quite the same treatment from manufacturers. Maybe I’m off, but I swear I saw that somewhere. This might be their solution to have merchandise year round with that retro theme. I would not be shocked to still see the throwbacks for a game or two.
Correct. This is a huge point actually. I can tell you from my time working in sports retail and for a professional baseball team that these kinds of merchandising rules can really impact how a team approaches their brand and retail strategy. I assume that's especially the case now more than ever with all the extra special uniforms and the Nike uniform limits.
Any uniform included in the 4+1 set is considered part of the Authentic Collection, and therefore is eligible to have matching Authentic Collection on-field and retail products.
We've already seen City Connect uniforms paired with matching on-field apparel (player jackets, hoodies, shirts, etc.) in the dugout and in the shop. One-off throwbacks aren't eligible for this option, but anything retained under this 4+1 system will be. Thus the Devil Rays throwbacks sticking around. The Rays can sell on-field Authentic Collection merchandise with that throwback branding, as opposed to having to stick to the Cooperstown Collection line for throwback merchandise. I suspect this is why Seattle dropped gray instead of the awful cream Sunday alternates; this way they can continue to sell blue + yellow Authentic Collection merchandise. In response to the Braves, it sounds like this might be similar reasoning. Utilizing the City Connect uniform as a retro inspired design gives them an avenue to sell Authentic Collection merchandise in royal blue + red without having to sacrifice a different uniform.

That shirt’s already on Fanatics as a “Nike Local Legend” series shirt. Not City Connect.
Yeah, each team has something similar. They're not based on City Connect, but some do seem to carry on the same visual language of certain City Connect uniforms. (White Sox, Astros)

Looks fine, but pretty underwhelming. It looks like they might be using light gray pants, but it's hard to tell from the photos/video. This identity is the perfect place for a Pittsburgh team to use steel gray as a signature color. Use black and yellow to fit into the city sports scene, but lean into steel gray. Gray helmets and pants would've been great.
I agree that yellow helmets with these uniforms would be an improvement. I've long wanted the Steelers to revert to yellow helmets, but that's for another discussion. The yellow stripe on the black helmet is ridiculously thick. The collars of the jerseys are rough. Not great, but could be worse. I'm glad they kept the shoulder/sleeve color block design.

MLB Stadium Saga: Oakland/Tampa Bay/Southside
in Sports In General

With all the entertainment options in Vegas, I just can't imagine many folks flocking to see a poorly run franchise play a meaningless baseball game on a daily basis. It's going to be a nearly empty stadium most of the time. Another Marlins Park situation.
