  1. It doesn't necessarily have to do with the rebrand itself. Most of the negative reaction has to do with how the franchise handles the history of the previous location. A rebrand is often a sign that the franchise isn't recognizing that previous history though. When teams like the Canes move and start from a blank slate (not recognizing retired numbers, new team name, etc.), they kind of lose the right to wear throwbacks. If they haven't previously celebrated the history of the former location of the franchise, then wearing/selling throwbacks just looks like a complete moneygrab. I would loosely liken it to the difference between Canada and the USA's relationship with the British monarchy (not a direct analogy, but hear me out). If the US all of a sudden started printing the monarchs on their money, we would all kind of collectively say WTF.
  2. We should keep in mind too that the jerseys are also retail products. Adding details that fans get to see every time they put on a jersey before a game is great in my mind as long as it doesn't detract from the look on the ice, which these don't.
  3. I wouldn't even call it a nice logo...It's well drawn in portions but the typography is not great, and conceptually it doesn't make much sense.
  4. the weirdest thing for me is that technically the Rangers crest should work great on a jersey, it's like perfect proportionately for a hockey crest. Still looks weird though which I have to assume is purely based on previous perception of the team. Kind of a weird scenario where the history outways "proper" design ideas...For some reason I think if they had always had the crest on the jerseys we would all love it, but it just doesn't work that way
  5. Am I missing something here about reasons to not like Dan? Granted this was ten plus years ago now, but he was always really gracious offering critics on my work when I was just a high school student and he was one of the biggest things in sports branding. This might not really be the place to discuss but just wanted to offer that my experience with Dan has been great.
  6. I'm specifically talking about the "All Star Game" font which is exactly the same (albeit warped/skewed) grey/white interior details and all
  7. a bit odd to see them rip off the Colorado All Star type since they're an official partner of MLB...
  8. Some interesting stuff from the Sabres. Anyone with access to the logo slicks know if this wordmark is official, or just for social use?
  9. now that I've looked closer at the uniform history this must be the case because of the pants stripe difference, but weird that the sock stripes even look like a different shade than the sanitaries
  10. just saw this photo posted on twitter and was shocked to learn that the Colts wore silver pants at one point in the 80's. I had gone my whole life and never seen a photo of them
  11. funniest thing about this to me is that the pictures from the article show they are also very obviously ripping off the Flames logo...
  12. For the record my personal replies to you had nothing to do with your design opinions, and everything to do with your attitude. I might not agree with you and that's fine. Actually I'd go so far as to say it's great. If we all had the same opinions every thread would just be one post with 1000 likes on it. Treat people with less hostility, and you might see the same back.
  13. There is a difference between criticizing the final product and being an asshat. Talk about how much you hate the design all you want, I'm not a huge fan of it either. But if someone is going to go out of their way to explain to you why something might have ended up this way then don't turn around and say like "full of excuses as usual". That's not design criticism. This board has driven away enough people who can offer this kind of insight, let's not continue to do it.
  14. oh come on...someone who has real experience in this industry openly shares their knowledge of how things actually work and this is the response?
  15. Finland's jersey for the Olympics...this is promising for the rest of the Nike designs
