    NHL Minimalist Logos

About a week or so ago, I saw a snapchat on the Penguins' story of a fan with a neat poster design. The style of the logo inspired me to make one in a similar style for the rest of the league. My basic rules for myself was that the logo had to be one continuous line that starts and stops in different areas, or that it doesn't become a closed shape rather than just a line. In a few cases I had to use a team's alternate logo if the primary didn't work well, and in two cases I had to use teams' past logos. The one team I'm still not completely happy about is Boston, I think they look a bit off, so if anyone has any ideas it's appreciated! I also have a playoff bracket using these logos that's been updated to the conference final after yesterday's game sevens. C&C appreciated!
  2. I came across an idea for a secondary logo for the Stars, and decided to run with it. The presentation is below. I've got a version made up for the HJC Random Competition. The challenge was to create the Stars in red and blue, and you can find a link to that HERE.

    STL Blues Concept (UPDATE 1)

Hey, Guys! Getting back into the swing of things now that the semester is over. This concept centers around the musical identity of the blues with the striping drawing inspiration from the 5 lines and 4 spaces of the treble clef and a slightly-recolored horn secondary logo making a return. As title suggests, I am starting to tire of the limitations of paint.net, specifically surrounding logo creation and pixelation of images and angled striping. As such, in addition to C&C if you guys have any suggestions as to which software you prefer for design purposes, both for those issues and others, I would much appreciate it. As always C&C is much appreciated, Thanks Guys, JB Designs
  4. I've always loved the Penguins' old wordmark, or at least the idea of it, but let's be honest: it looks quite dated at this point. So that led me to attempt to modernize the logo. It also draws some aspects from the current wordmark with the highlights. After this, I decided there was no better time to attempt to redesign the Penguins' current skating penguin logo, addressing and fixing its flaws, which is something I've wanted to do for some time now. The main thing I addressed was the mess of shapes that are the gloves, going for a more simple look, without losing the imagery of a glove. The other main change was keeping the stroke widths as consistent as possible throughout the logo, and I believe the only place it deviates is having a thicker outline on the triangle. I'm personally really happy with the turnout of the wordmark, but I'm a bit more iffy on the logo, so any C&C would be appreciated, especially with the logo.

  6. There won't be any third jerseys in the NHL for the next season, but that hasn't stopped me from designing some anyways. I am happy to announce the start of my 2nd series on this site, "NHL Third Jerseys". I know, creative title, I hope that my concepts are a bit more creative. C&C is always appreciated! Below are direct links to individual concepts and will be updated as I post each new concept I post. Pacific Division Anaheim Ducks Arizona Coyotes Calgary Flames Edmonton Oilers Los Angeles Kings San Jose Sharks Vancouver Canucks Central Division Chicago Blackhawks Colorado Avalanche Dallas Stars Minnesota Wild Nashville Predators St Louis Blues Winnipeg Jets
  7. LONG WRITE-UP BELOW: IF YOU WANNA JUST SEE THE UNIS, SCROLL DOWN. I'm gonna let you in on two secrets about myself. #1: I'm obsessed with hockey. #2: I'm obsessed with video games. (I know, so unique, right?) I can still remember the first game I bought for myself. I just got an Xbox on Christmas Day 2002: I was 8. The next day, during the cataclysm of Boxing Day shopping, I smashed my piggy bank and bought the first hockey game I could find. It was a little thing called NHL Hitz 20-03. Chris Pronger was on the front cover, surrounded in flames. I bought it thinking I had just bought a normal hockey game. I was very wrong. In NHL Hitz, the action is 3-on-3. It's fast paced, violent, and incredibly unrealistic: think NBA Jam or NFL Blitz on ice. Games are played for 3 3-minute periods, and there are only two penalties: fighting and goalie interference. If you lose a fight, you're ejected. If you win, you and an opposing player serve concurrent 30-second penalties, and the rest of the players play 2-on-2 for the time. Someone would always score. 2-on-2 tends to work like that. Anyway, the franchise mode for that game enamored me. In it, you pick a small team of players and play against a series of 40 increasingly-difficult opponents for the right to play in the NHL. The mode would work like this: you'd play 4 teams, and if you beat them, you'd play a "boss team". You beat them, you advance to the next round. In later rounds, you'd play against actual NHL teams, but in earlier rounds - and in every boss game - you'd play against some weird and wacky imaginary team in an odd location: there were teams on four continents, in sun and snow, in big bustling cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, and New York, and others in places like Victoria, Sarnia, and Montego Bay. Not long ago, I found my copy of the game again, and the obsession continued. But now, I can't help but think the teams, logos, and information is all dated. So I re-did everything. This is a 16-part series, where all the "made-up" teams are made up, dressed down, and made over. New unis and logos are used for all teams; there's even a name change for one team. I used a random name generator to produce new names for players; a random number generator was used to create statistical attributes. Phony histories were made; full 23-man rosters were made out of thin air. A new season will be run to determine who's on top in the newly-established Global Hitz League. A warning before the first team is unveiled: I've gone into quite some detail about these new players, and the unis will not be what can be considered "conventional". These aren't real teams: these will never hit the ice. So, let's break some rules, and have some fun. Without any further babble, here's team one: the #16 ranked Hong Kong Silicon. Home/away/third: For reference, here are the original uniforms from the game. And here is the roster and attributes of the 2016 Hong Kong Silicon. C&C is welcome about...well, everything. If you've got a question about the game, the project itself, or anything else, don't hesitate to ask.

    Houston Bulls NHL Expansion Team

Hello everyone, It's been a while since I've last posted on this site. Glad to stop by and see some new people posting! This is one of the first concepts of done in quite some time and I figured I'd add it to the forum. This was my senior project for my Graphic Design major. The last graphic design class in my college career! In short, we had the whole semester (a little more as we started at the end of last semester) to work on a brand. There were 14 students in the course and we all picked something to brand. Some picked fast food (You can see some of her work on my Behance project page), check the game program), some picked guitar stores, puppy adoption, Positive news stations, but knowing me, I had to do a hockey team. Full project on Behance, feel free to check it out on there or just see some of the images here! Link: https://www.behance.net/gallery/51875739/Houston-Bulls-NHL-Expansion-Team
  9. When the Minnesota Wild released their stadium series uniform, I thought it could be the excellent basis for a new set. I removed the white yoke (which really doesn't look good for the Wild, no matter the precedent), used the red number/white outline arrangement, and added the stripes to the pants. The white version has a green yoke, for better color balance. The other change I made will probably be controversial, namely the removal of the wheat color. I like the way in which the green and red contrast with each other, and I've always felt that the wheat color muddied it up. White makes it look sharper to me. It may be a departure from tradition for the team, but I think it works. This may be the first of a new series for me. C+C is greatly appreciated!

    NHL Shield Redesign Concepts

The current NHL shield, which the league introduced for the 2005-06 season, does its job decently, but in my view it has its share of issues. It's a bit cluttered. The "LNH" version doesn't look very natural. There wasn't a lot wrong with the previous NHL shield either, and I used it as a base for my redesign of it. I did keep some things from the current shield, like its Stanley Cup silver color. Here's an "LNH" version: I also dabbled with some auxiliary symbols: I also took care to ensure my shields didn't fall apart in one color:

  13. (Edit 12/30/16) Took a break for a couple days but I will get back to it soon to do some fixes on LA, and Washington for sure..maybe some others) I wanted to start a project that would get my creativity going, and kind of kick-start me back into the mood of graphic design. I decided to create my ideal NHL. (formerly "perfect", but nothings perfect) This is what I personally would change, or not change as far as teams logos are concerned. I accept all thoughts, ideas, proposed changes etc..... ******NOT ALL THESE DESIGNS ARE MINE.****** Some are obviously based on teams past and present logo archives. Some are from concepts created that I found online. I will recognize each and every aspect of a logo, or entire logos that are not mine, and give 100% credit where credit is due. Most teams have a current logo, and a source logo (the logo used for my inspiration to my own) I will explain the best I can how I came up with the thought behind each chosen logo. I know most of them are color changes, but remember..this started as a project to get me motivated back into graphic design. There will be more custom projects to follow ANAHEIM DUCKS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO USED FOR MY VERSION: MY VERSION: (ALTERED ORIGINAL MIGHTY DUCKS LOGO) - I wanted to revert back to the old Mighty Ducks logo because I think it's more recognizable than the current webbed "D", it has attitude, and I just like it a whole lot better. - I felt the original colors were good to use since they are very unique, but I also wanted to incorporate the more 'orangey' orange for the sticks and the whole "Orange County" reference. - I removed the shading from inside the holes for the mask. ARIZONA COYOTES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (REVERT BACK TO ORIGINAL PHOENIX COYOTES LOGO) - Pretty much the same thought process as the Ducks. I wanted the older logo because of its attitude. The new one just really really doesn't do anything for me. - I figure the old logo will do good with an updated jersey, with the use of the dark maroon, and off-white for striping. Keep the crazy amount of colors strictly to the logo itself. BOSTON BRUINS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (ALTERED SHADE OF YELLOW) - Small change to the yellow. Made if more of a distinct yellow, instead of the often used "golden yellow" around the NHL. BUFFALO SABRES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGOS (2): MY VERSION: - I really enjoyed the outcome of this one. - I asked myself, how could I make such a non-photogenic animal appear menacing for the Sabres. I like the total idea of the swords and the buffalo, but something just wasn't fully there for me to love it. I decided to remove the heavy blue from inside the circle, changed it to white keeping the overall look that people love, but giving it a modern feel. - Some people may not like the light grey within the white, but I attempted to make the wordmark and buffalo blue, and it just didn't give the look I wanted. I like the slightly subliminal approach. To each his own I suppose. CALGARY FLAMES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (REMOVE BLACK OUTLINE) - Simply removed the black outline. Is it necessary at all??? CAROLINA HURRICANES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (MODIFIED) - Changed the center to a more simplistic design. - Thickened the silver outline. - I feel as though there is a slight sense of movement the way it is offset. Didn't think this logo needed a major overhaul, but at the same time...something was not right. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS (NO CHANGES MADE) COLORADO AVALANCHE CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (MODIFIED) - Removed the blue oval and thickened the outline. - I felt the oval took away from the sizing of the logo especially while on jerseys, and I felt that it really serves no purpose on a logo that isn't exactly symmetrical to begin with. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (SWITCH TO BLUE AND OFF-WHITE ALTERNATE) - I HATE everything about the current primary Columbus uses. They overused red, white and blue scheme. And the primary logo that belongs at an All-Star game, not anywhere else to represent a professional sports team. - In comes the alternate blue and off-white canncon logo. Along with the jerseys they use to sport this logo. In my opinion this brings the overall look of the Blue Jackets from absolute worst in the league, to the top. They couldn't switch to this style in real life fast enough if you ask me. DALLAS STARS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: **NOT MY DESIGN*** DESIGN CREDIT TO 'TORCH CREATIVE' MY VERSION: - I took the design from Torch Creative and changed the shade of yellow to a lighter version, getting away from the brown spectrum. - I really like the design those guys came up with, and I just can't stand the current one used by Dallas, just does not feel like a great concept to me. DETROIT RED WINGS (NO CHANGES MADE) EDMONTON OILERS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: - I darkened the blue, and added the copper color (once used by the team) as an outline for the orange. I think it adds a little bit extra, without taking away any of the classic aspects from the well known Oilers logo. FLORIDA PANTHERS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGOS: (2) MY VERSION: - Not a fan of the new Panthers logo, I set out to create something that I always wanted to see, the old panther, slightly less detailed, jumping out of the sun. - I mocked this up against their older red jerseys and this logo really pops! HARTFORD WHALERS (TEAM ADDED) (NO CHANGES TO LOGO) - One of the greatest logos of all time in any sport. I just had to have the Hartford Whalers back in my perfect NHL, what's not to love? - Used original (lighter) blue and green. LA KINGS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGOS: (2) MY VERSION: - I felt there were a ton better options than the current banner flag / shield thing the Kings have going on right now. (Even though they've had success with it) - I wanted purple back in the picture, along with the crown and the font from that era. - After messing around quite a bit, this modern shield is what I came up with. I'd prefer this on a black jersey. LAS VEGAS KNIGHTS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM:(ALL LEGAL ISSUES ASIDE) MY VERSION: - Added the 'Las' to Vegas because it's just better. - With the LA Kings change to purple for my project, I figured silver would be the best way to go for the Knights. The dark color is an EXTREMELY deep blue, almost black, and the unique shade of red outline reminds me of the Canucks when they went blue and red. At the same time this feels different to me. - Looks a ton better than the current mud in my opinion. MINNESOTA WILD (NO CHANGES MADE) MONTREAL CANADIENS (NO CHANGES MADE) NASHVILLE PREDATORS CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: MY VERSION: - I wanted to get away from all the golden yellow parody in the NHL, so I chose to give Nashville a more mellow yellow. - I altered the sabre-toothed cat to be more fierce. - The dark color is a really deep greenish blue with I feel contrasts the yellow pretty well. - All in all the changes feel pretty drastic, yet at the same time its all so familiar, I think this change would become very welcome in Tennessee once the bright orange/yellow memory wore off. NEW JERSEY DEVILS (NO CHANGES MADE) NEW YORK ISLANDERS (REVERT TO OLDER COLORS) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (ONLY CHANGED BACK TO 97/98 SHADE OF BLUE) - I think the darker blue really really brings out the orange over the lighter blue. There's really little else to be said about this classic gem of a logo. NEW YORK RANGERS (NO CHANGES MADE) OTTAWA SENATORS (CHANGE TO TEAMS ALTERNATE AS PRIMARY) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (ALTERNATE LOGO FROM SENATORS ARCHIVE) - I do not like the current Senators logo. At all. I see what they were going for, but in my opinion, it failed. Meanwhile they have this beauty^ as an alternate. They need to make the switch ASAP. PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (NO CHANGES MADE) - My favorite team!!! Sweeeeeeet logo. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS (REVERT TO 'ROBOPENGUIN' BUT USE BRIGHTER YELLOW) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (REVERT BACK TO THE ROBO-PENGUIN OF THE 90'S) - Although I really actually do like the skating penguin a whole lot, I feel the infamous robo-penguin is much classier and noble. It was a back and forth on this one. QUEBEC NORDIQUES (TEAM ADDED) (LOGO TWEAKED) ORIGINAL LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: - I thought the original Nordiques logo needed to be touched up slightly. The darker red makes the lighter blue stand out to me. Hopefully to everyone else also. SAN JOSE SHARKS (SWITCH TO 25TH ANNIVERSARY SWIMMING SHARK) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: MY VERSION: - It's hard to go wrong with any of the sharks logos, so I chose to go with the version without a triangle behind. Love these damn logos, top notch. ST. LOUS BLUES CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: - I wanted to go with the lighter blue for the inside, it just felt better than having the darker version. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING (SWITCH TO ALTERNATE LOGO) (COLOR CHANGE) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: (ALTERNATE FROM LIGHTNING LOGO ARCHIVE) MY VERSION: - Didn't like the use of such a dark blue when I felt a lighter, more "electric" blue would look GREAT with a black jersey. (The letters and bolt(s) on the inside will stay white. Really brings the team identity to life. TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS (NO CHANGES MADE) VANCOUVER CANUCKS (SWITCH TO JOHNNY CANUCK LOGO AS PRIMARY) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: (ALTERNATE FROM CANUCKS LOGO ARCHIVE) - It does take a little getting used to seeing this guy in all his glory on the front of a jersey (pictures do exist), but it's well worth it, and I think it would finally give all Vancouver fans what they really wanted all along. WASHINGTON CAPITALS (MODIFIED ALTERNATE 'WEAGLE' LOGO AS PRIMARY) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: SOURCE LOGO: (ALTERNATE 'WEAGLE' FROM CAPITALS LOGO ARCHIVE) MY VERSION: - This really could be my favorite creation from the whole set. I was back and forth on if I should keep the sticks or not, but they balance out the 3 stars that represent the D.C. flag. WINNIPEG JETS (COLORS ALTERED) CURRENT LOGO USED BY TEAM: MY VERSION: - I just don't believe the grey is necessary. Although it doesn't look bad on the logo as a whole, the current jerseys they use (beautiful in my eyes) don't really call for grey to be used, so I decided to make a more jersey friendly version. Don't miss out on the white outline that makes the whole thing look great on, you guessed it, those b e a u t i f u l jerseys!!! That's it (for now) Let me know what you guys think!!!!!!

    NHL 2017/18 Outdoor Games

Hey everyone! So, with the 16/17 regular season having just come to an end, i figured I'd get a start on some jersey concepts for the highlights of the 17/18 season, the outdoor games. I'm not sure how long it'll take me to complete them, but I will finish all 8 teams before the season starts. So without further ado, here's my first team of the NHL 100 Classic, the Ottawa Senators!

    NHL Crazy Outdoor Game

This may sound crazy, however Florida would make a great place for an outdoor game, probably a stadium series game. The perfect place would be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stadium (Raymond James Stadium). Tampa Bay can reach the temperature of nearly 32 F, a perfect temperature and can sustain ice long enough. This would be perfect for these two Florida teams, shedding much press attention on what would have otherwise been a fairly unnoticed event by them. The jersey were based off the old Tampa jerseys mashed together and were meant for Tampa only, however the Panthers looked too good in them to pass by. Generally the theme besides storm vs sun is retro jerseys. The arena would be set up with palm trees all around the outskirts similar Minnesota's pine tree display. There would be a small picture above the arena of a sun facing off against a storm, pushing against one another. This would be between the logos. When the Bolts come out lightning coils will activate as they walk in. When the Panthers walk in fire will erupt followed by gold-ish smoke. Worst case scenario it all melts .

Flames Concept And Free NHL Mockup Psd

I think my concept here better suits the German national team but I still like the look of it lol. The double stroked Flames logo and the three variations of it drive me a little crazy so I went with a simple, sleeker approach with the whole concept. The bigger story here however is the mockup. I found this free template online by one Sean FF and it was in a pretty rough shape. So I completely overhauled it, adding smart objects, more options, shading and lighting, cc, but most importantly cleaning up the edges. She still isn't the best Ps mockup in the world but she can get the job done. I offer this updated version for free to you all and would love to see you guys come up with. Thanks and Thank you Sean FF for your template! Download Link; https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxTJxMdfzK0raEx1cktwamRWa0U

    2018 NHL All Star Weekend

This was @JJ Anderes' and my entry into the HJC Pairs comp. We ended up winning it, so thanks to HJC and all who voted! Anyways, let's dig into this. The concept was to make some logos and uniforms for a future all star game. We chose to put the NHL's All Star game in Denver, Colorado. Below are JJ's logos, and my uniforms. It was a lot of fun working with JJ, and he definitely made some incredible logos. Thanks for watching!
  20. Hey all, this is a little something that I've been working on recently. This idea was originally intended to be submitted to HJC's pairs competition, but @McElroy19 and I couldn't fully put together our ideas and submit before the deadline (but thanks for helping out and giving me feedback throughout the entire design process Matt!). and here is what the main mark looks like on a white background (and in BW). I'm definitely open to all C&C, as this is by no means a "finished" project. I am just a bit stuck on what I could possibly change/add/etc. to make this a stronger mark - if anything even needs to be edited at all. Any thoughts? Oh, and uniforms are on their way too
  21. I had been putting off the start of this project for a while and then I remembered school is right around the corner and so I thought it better to get it going as soon as possilble. As the title and header image suggest, it's time for another NHL redesign from me. The last one I did came in 2013 and looking back on it, was just awful. I hope that in the 3 years since, my skills have gotten better. Anyways, its another NHL leaguewide redesign, and even with Adidas taking over, I left all the jerseys Reebok branded. Lets get in to it. The last time I ran through the NHL, I was very sloppy, this time I hope to not be a walking disaster. Anyways, here's a couple rules I'll hope to follow: NHL sets a rule on jerseys: 5 can be in the rotation for any given season. Special event jerseys (Winter Classic, SS, Heritage) can be worn after their event if the club desires. Just means one of the 5 pre-determined jerseys gets worn one less time that season Have to have a designated home and away set, but the other 3 can be alternates, throwbacks, what have you. I think one team has 5 jerseys but you'll see why when I get to them. The Bruins are not the team, and here they are: Call me crazy, but I don't think too highly of the EDGE Bruins uniforms. The overoutlining ruins it for me. Plus, I'm just not a fan of the uniforms. Call it unpopular if you want. I went back in time on their look. -took the stripes from the '69-'74 jerseys -kept the more modern looking yoke design -deleted a few outlines from the spoked B, which improves the look drastically IMHO -BRUINS bear logo graces the shoulders. -single color NOB, also fixes the look. -home socks stay yellow, but both sets reflect the jersey stripes now. -black pants now feature standalone B on the pant leg. Alternate: Having two black jerseys feels really redundant to me, and so elevating the Winter Classic jersey to me felt a very lateral move. So I played with the design a little bit, because I was a big fan of said WC uniform. -basically flipped the colors on the WC jersey from this past year. -big ass stripes on the sleeves, and one big ass hem stripe. -modern bear logo on the chest. C&C welcome and will have Buffalo up next.

    NHL 100 Classic Concept

This Friday, the NHL announced the next outdoor game: the NHL 100 Classic, taking place in Ottawa between the Senators and Canadiens. Only the logo has been released, which is similar to that of the Centennial Classic. With that in mind, I decided to create jersey concepts based off of the Centennial Classic's style. For the Habs, I outlined their logo in silver, and modernized their chest stripe uniforms from their NHA days, by adding arm striping, putting it on the Adidas template, and removing the hem striping. I also outlined the outermost stripes with silver. For the Sens, I created a red version of their alternate jerseys, added some silver to the logo, and again outlined the outermost stripes with silver. Like the Wings and Leafs, I added modernized older alternate logos to the pants. What do you think? C&C Appreciated!

    Calgary Flames Concept

After finishing my Oilers concept, I wondered if I could make a decent jersey for their rivals, the Flames that still included black in their colour scheme, as I like their logo better with it. I went in the same direction as my Oilers concept with two stripes, and then added black stripes around and in between them. I think that it turned out pretty well. The numbers are triple outlined to match the logos on the jerseys, and I brought back their alternate logo from last year. Lastly, I wasn't sure on whether to do a full-length yoke as a throwback to these jerseys, and I'd like to hear what you guys think. C&C is appreciated!
