Columbus Crew to Unveil New Logo October 8

I have to say I like the update. Anything really would have been better than the previous tire fire, but this one is actually very nice. It might be a litte boring, but at least it doesn't have any of that weird crap some of the more recent MLS logos have had (Kansas, San Jose) or poor execution (NYC).

Maybe they really want to pay homage to the German heritage by making it very durable and functional. This is not a logo you need to feel embarassed 15 years from now. I think it's a strong badge that will grow on people and serve its purpose very well. They wanted a German logo and got one. I assume nobody thought HSV's logo was spectacular when they first unveiled it, but there it is, clean, simple and functional.

Like the team, like their colors, not feeling the logo Played it safe, feel it lacks personality. Would much rather rock the Blue Jackets C-Flag. My two cents, that is all.

Completely agree. Like the Blue Jackets there just is no personality to it. It certainly works, and I like the simplicity of it, but I feel they missed a huge opportunity to use the unique state flag that they have. I feel it would make a great looking crest.

I think you're on to something with the state flag thing.

I wonder if we'll ever get to see any of the cutting room concepts. I'm curious as to whether any of them involved that shape, or even that of the 96 badge. Either of those would've provided some type of tangible character, more so than a cliché "O"--whether it really was for "Ohio" or not....

*Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. 😁

doubt we'll see any of their concepts soon, but it might be time to share some shameless self promotion. when i heard they were going to be changing their logo i started working up some ideas but didnt get real far. now that they've made it official i'll abandon this lil project, but here some ideas i had. playing a lot with the shape of a shovel head. would love to see if you or anyone else had any ideas/concepts?

I like your mode of thinking, B-Mo. I think i can see what you were going for...really honing in on the workman persona of the club's nickname (and in my line of work I'm sure you can see how that would resonate with me). I like Row B/Column C and Row D/Column B the best.

(And I never did get to do anything with the concept scribbles I sketched up...kinda wish I could've, though.)

Milwaukee's actually known for a fair amount of German cultural quirks, though (beer, bratwurst, festivals) despite having its share of Polish and italian heritage as well. For a team from here to adopt a German-inspired identity would hardly be as random as Columbus (or any of the other cities you named for that matter).

I know, that's why I listed all those cities with obvious German presences. I think Milwaukee got the fun Germans and Cincinnati got the boring ones.

Well, we did get the the heavy drinking socialists who were driven out of the old country.

More simple?

I like the general shape, with the flag, but not sure what the hammer-and-pick means. Looks like mining to me?

I dunno, guess I was thinking of things a construction crew would use or something. Gonna have to go back to it and rework it here soon. Been needing to.

Cardinals -- Rams -- Blues -- Tigers -- Liverpool

Columbus also has an Italian Village but Crew Stadium was also inspired by a stadium in Germany. The team is redefining the meaning of Crew to represent a group of people so a hard hat silhouette would not work on the new logo. As yet another Columbus resident, I would like to point out that Ohio State runs this city and the school colors they originally wanted were black and yellow. Those were already taken, but that is where the Crew got the colors from. As far as the logo goes, I really liked the old one and the new one does not stand out or represent anything .

not all logos are born with meaning and a "story". none come with prepackaged emotional attachment and brand equity, which is what really makes a logo meaningful. it doesn't have to include a cheesy skyline or even say the city's name to represent the place/team over time. but given time, and when designed with the right personality and cultural/historical cues (as this one is) it will come to clearly represent this team and be a classic symbol for a powerful brand. this logo is similar to the Packers, 49ers, Cowboys, Colts (i like football). they dont scream what they're about, but they're clear today about what they represent and try to change one of those logos and people would riot.
