Ugh, none of this "Penn State should use the logo on the helmets thing"...Its never gonna happen.

Right. Just like they'd never put names on their jerseys either.

That was to honor the players that stayed, not to change the school's tradition and identity. In fact, in a way it honored tradition in the way that it honored the loyalty of Penn State's players and fans.

Technically Sparky is no longer our "main athletic" logo but I'd love to see him back featured on the helmet even if for a "one game only/Special" uniform.

He's still there. He's just on the back now.

Honestly, as much as I like Sparky (best logo in college sports IMO), I've actually grown quite fond of our pitchfork. I think it looks great on the helmets.

Forgive me for talking about my alma mater so much lately, but I think they are a good candidate here. They are the University at Buffalo. The athletics department is trying to rebrand itself as NEW YORK - Buffalo. But... they still use the institutional UB logo on their helmets. They are even using it on their black alt helmets that they just got this summer.

They should either use their bull logo (without the word, obviously) or some modification of their 50-yard line logo from their new turf.

This is an example of why my answer is "almost none". The name change aside, I think the "UB" looks MUCH better on a helmet than this would. Logos that are fierce or detailed seldom look good on a helmet in my opinion. Thankfully, I don't think the whole "wordmark/logo" thing is in any more, but even just the logo, sans letters, would look odd to me. But I know that's just me. My least favorite helmets include Boise State logo/wordmark, the old Iowa State helmet, Fresno State, ASU "Sparky" helmet,* Kansas with the Jayhawk, etc.

School name confusion could lead them to use something like this; if so, I'd hope they go more "silhouette" (Texas, Iowa), but then they'd be too much like the Bills, I suppose.

* a VERY unpopular opinion

Co-sign to all this. I'll also add that I do not understand what UB is trying to gain by branding itself with a much clunkier name like New York-Buffalo. Do they not realize that most schools with hyphenated names (UAB, UTEP, UNC-Charlotte, etc.) are trying to get away from them?

The ones that are trying to get away from the hyphenated play in states where the "main campus" already has claim to being University of Insert State Here in the sports world where people just refer to the team as the state name. There is no single college program that has claimed New York. If NYU had a large sports presence, I could see people refer to it as New York despite it being a private school. But since there is no single school that people think of as being the University of New York, I don't blame SUNY-Buffalo for trying. They may need to start of as New York-Buffalo for a bit before it evolves into just New York. In Louisiana, UL-Lafayette is trying to stake claim as being the one referred to as University of Louisiana or just simply Louisiana despite objections from UL-Monroe. They have even changed their primary mark. It used to say Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns. Now it says Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns.

My main point was that their helmet logo is inconsistent with the rest of the football team's new brand. I'm not completely crazy about the bull logo, although I do think it's solid. I'd actually be in favor of a full rebrand. If you're the Buffalo Bulls, you're too close to the Buffalo Bills (the school had their name first, but it doesn't really matter). They have this thing called the "New York Bulls Initiative"; google "New York Bulls" and you get 20,000 pages of the soccer New York Red Bulls before anything related to UB.

I just googled "New York State Bulls" and the UB athletics website was the third hit. The first was to an article detailing the re-brand (if you can even call it that). If they absolutely MUST shy away from "Buffalo" and "UB" as their brand... which I think makes zero sense to do... New York State is the only somewhat logical and somewhat honest way to do it.

Yes... if you get more specific, you get better results, but they want to be the New York Bulls. The program is called the New York Bulls Initiative. #NYBI New York State would probably be the best option IMO, but that's not what they're doing.

On a side note, I saw an alt version of that bull logo today on some merchandise that had BULLS underneath instead of BUFFALO... that would look pretty good on a helmet.

I wouldn't mind seeing just the head of the bull on a helmet.
That bull really needs to lose the nose ring.

Better to explain with the picture I suppose...the gold nose ring is such a distraction to that logo.

The ring is a necessary element so people don't think the animal shown is a buffalo (which would be easy connection to make given the word BUFFALO is right beneath it)

Good point. That way they know when they drive by a local ranch that the blue-colored creatures in the pasture are cattle and not buffalo. 10-4.

Well if that whole experience taught me anything it's that Penn State fans lose a sense of perspective when it comes to their football team.

Fact is that the tradition was associated with one man. One man who was linked to a series of horrible crimes.

A consious decision to break from that and move forward would be a positive gesture.

+1. Clinging to a shameful past is never a good idea. Also they haven't been an elite program since the late 90's. Their fans are worse than notre dame when it comes to this. Michigan isn't far behind these days. Hell the whole B1G is about a decade behind the rest of the country.

Worse than Notre Dame when it comes to what? Notre Dame quietly rolls right thru academic scandals, co-ed rape allegations, and a hyped-up Heisman campaign based on a player's "girlfriend" and grandmother dying a day apart from each other pretty easily these days.

All that said, PSU should put a sticker on that helmet.

OK it's a tie between nd and psu for most delusional fans.
