Tigers6884 Posted August 28, 2014 Share Posted August 28, 2014 I recently skated on inline rollerblades for the first time in over 10 years yesterday, and that got me thinking about some forgotten versions of our favorite sports. Believe it or not, there are actually professional leagues for both roller hockey (Major League Roller Hockey) and Wiffle Ball (Golden Stick Wiffle Ball).I'm including the Arena Football League in this conversation because even though it is still well known, it is nowhere close to the NFL in terms of popularity. What is your guys' opinion of these "lower level" sports leagues? Would you consider it an impressive to have the job title of "professional roller hockey player", even if roller hockey isn't considered to be on the same skill level/popularity level as ice hockey? And should professional Wiffle Ball leagues and the Arena Football League exist, or are they something to laugh at? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
MJWalker45 Posted August 28, 2014 Share Posted August 28, 2014 If you're playing Arena League you're still playing with professionals so I don't see a big difference from the NFL other than money and a drop in talent. If you're a pro wiffle ball player you're probably not getting paid at all except for what you win at tournaments. And I actually thought of the old Roller Jam shows that were on what is now Spike. Luigi74 Posted August 28, 2014 Share Posted August 28, 2014 I coach Women's Flat Track Roller Derby and it's a pay to play(insurance/practice/travel costs) deal for all but a select few, people seem to be impressed when I mention that I do it. The only players making a living or supplementing their income via the sport are the very very elite via seminars they are invited to teach at or ones they put on at conventions.I'm one of the coaches of Greece's national team for the upcoming World Cup and we have to do t-shirt drives and crowdfunding to pay for it and will still have to pay out of pocket for some expenses.
