European Soccer into NFL Football - Closing the English PL (Sunderland, Southampton, Stoke, Hull, West Ham)

Premier League ==> PAGE 4

For those who have been following my two previous series, you may have realized I like fantasy when it comes to logo concepts. This is why I bring to you the logical sequel to my europeanization of American soccer: The Americanization of European football (soccer).

But as much as I like bringing in football/soccer concepts, I decided to add a little twist to the event and turn the famous football/soccer clubs into Football clubs (as in NFL).

Now, before we get started, I'm gonna be very honest with you: this is gonna be kinda hard for me. I'm used to conceiving football/soccer and turning towards American-like logos are really hard for an amateur like me. I've followed a couple of tutorials and they pretty much all needed a drawing tablet.

So let's just be honest, this is not gonna be your average NFL/NHL/NBA logo redesign concept thread.

But I'm going to work with it and who knows, maybe i'll grow my own style out of it !

With that being said, comments and advices are widely welcomed.

Where do I come from ?

I'm not familiar with american Football, I didn't want to attack the jerseys too much, but I'm glad you guys came up with that, I'll update the jerseys very soon.

What shall I add, do uniforms have the logos on it (as in soccer jerseys) or even ads on the front ?

Normally they'll have a logo or a wordmark under the collar, and have a logo/design/number on the sleeve, or occasionally have the numbers on the shoulder.

Ads arent usually put on the uniform.

Ahhh no ads! No, we don't have those haha.

A few tips about American jersey design.

Now that we've got that out of the way, American football jerseys traditionally have stripes or accents around the shoulders, in order to make the player look bigger. You can look at NFL and College football jersey pre-2010 for plenty of examples (like the NFL Reebok jerseys). Just be cautious if you intend to imitate newer designs, especially those from nike and under armour. They tend to be... a little much.

You can experiment with piping and patterns, but keep in mind that American football jersey are almost (99.9999% of the time) symmetrical.
Geometrical shapes like yokes or multiple straight stripes are more traditional looks. Piping and rounded stripes or organic-shaped accents or blade-shaped accents will give a jersey a more modern look (think of the word "sleek" while you design these). If you want to go down the ultra-modern/experimental path, then try your hand at patterns like animal stripes, feathers, flames, waves, etc. All these things apply to the pants as well (stripes/patterns/words will almost always be at least mostly vertical). All these things also apply to helmets. Stick with stripes (any kind as long as it is from front to back) or no stripes for most of the concepts, but don't be afraid to do some fun, but tame patterned helmets (like the Cinicinnati Bengals, the most beautiful football helmet there is).
Cultural or ethnic patterns are great, just remember to keep it respectful and not to make something too stereotypical.

The center of the front of the jersey, the area where the number is, should never be disrupted. The jersey revolves around the number, as it is important to see the players' numbers amid the chaos of the play. Unfortunately, that means no sashes, vertical sashes, pinstripes, vertical stripes, hoops, pin-hoops, horizontal chest stripes, or Ajax stripes. Be creative, but keep in mind not to put anything on the jersey that will distract too much from the numbers; the helmet is usually the main focus point of the uniform.

In terms of logos, there is typically a wordmark above the front numbers. They often look like basketball jerseys in this respect. Sometimes there is a logo above the front number if the logo is bold and stands out at a distance. There is usually an alternate logo on the sleeves if there aren't any stripes or patterns there. You will rarely find the tiny details you find on soccer jerseys in American football, such as mottos or small icons in random places (or neck tape). Again, these details are a bit meaningless in the chaos of the play.
There is usually a logo, preferably the team's main logo, on the left (the player's left) hip of the pants, regardless if you put stripes or accents on the pants.

Monochrome jersey sets (kits) look more modern, like a black jersey with black pants. More traditional combinations like red jersey/white pants are more traditional. The same concepts about size/shape perception from soccer/football design apply here (i.e. dark shirt+light pants=player looks bigger, monochrome or light shirt+dark pants=player looks smaller).
As far as number fonts go, the blocky fonts are traditional and go well with any traditional looking jerseys, while modern jerseys can have more 3-d, ornate, or themed fonts. If you want to have fun with the number fonts, make them similar to the team's wordmark.

In general, American football jersey design won't get as complicated as soccer/football kit design, but that doesn't mean you can't be creative with it. I really hope this helps, and I hope I'm not just going on about stuff you already know.

Nice job on the logos, wordmarks, and helmets you've done so far. You've done an absolutely lovely job of capturing the teams' essences in those wordmarks. I absolutely love the Red Devils helmet. Simple and iconic, but bold and intimidating. In general, I love the idea of using the clubs' nicknames as official nicknames for American football. Might I say, Geaux Southampton?

Have fun with the helmets. They can be white or any color. They can even be gold (go Saints!) or silver if appropriate. Sometimes they don't even need to have a logo on them if they look good enough plain, classic examples being the Bengals, the Browns, and the Crimson Tide.

Thanks BlueBomber, I'll definetely follow your tips.

Updated kits are up to come !

PS: I think I'm going to work my way around europe a little bit, try not to stick into one league at a time (maybe two franchises per big leagues, creating a loop), should I make names in the native languages or should I translate them into English ? Like Real Madrid for instance, which would be "Madrid Royals" in english. What do you guys think ?

I'd translate them into english. I think it'd be cool if use both the actual names of the teams for some and the nicknames of the teams for others.

I don't know, I get pretty fed up with American soccer fans who drool over European names and then forsake American sports culture, so I'd be for using local words for a league made of Europeans playing an American sport. It adds more color to the league/confederation. That way we all get to learn a bit about different cultures.

"Torino Bulls" wouldn't have a whole lot of meaning for Italians, but "Torino Tori" of "Tori di Torino" would. Same how Real Salt Lake and Sporting KC don't really make any sense. I totally go for Canaris de Nantes or Nantes Canaris instead Nantes Canaries. Mixing languages forcefully like that seems random. But it's up to you.

Hmm, I guess I'll maybe try to add two wordmarks, two logos. One for the local market and another one for the internationnal market. That could work out pretty well I believe (like "Canaris de Nantes" for France, "Kanaried Naoned" for locals and "Nantes Canaries" for international, could be fun to make !).

I've tried to work on the shoulders for MU. Tried to be creative for my first try and work with the devil's trident. Concerning the Golden Eagles, I'll admit I'm having a lack right now. I might try to find some good ole badass template like the helmet (or if a good sammaritan would kindly let me borrow one of his own !), because this one just blocks me with the outlines, I'm just not used to it.

PS: Upon seeing this home kit, I realize the tridents form two "M", as in Manchester !

To add to TheBlueBomber's list, home jerseys are usually a team's primary color and away jerseys are usually white. I like your start though and I'm excited for this series. You have the talent to really make this a good one. I would say that you need some yellow in the United set (maybe the devil should be yellow), white away jerseys for both teams and more navy blue and less yellow in the City set.

Love what you did with the pitchfork shoulders. I'd suggest putting the same on the away jersey, but make the pitchforks red to add some variation in there, and so there's not too much contrast congesting the design. Personally, I like the plain helmet with just the outline of the devil. It's actually the not-obvious approach, which is nice. Maybe make the facemasks light grey.

Yeah I just read about the white jerseys. I think it's a shame, away kits are important considering the amount of time you have to wear them, they have to fit your clubs' cuture even though this is not the primary colours (how many fans a year complain when they see a horrible blue Madrid jersey...).

I won't follow that rule. Not only because this is only an NFL-rule but also because I'll base my creations from the existing clubs, so I'm not gonna chose white when the club's obviously going for a green secondary colour.

Concerning the yellow on United, I don't think so, I don't even remember seeing yellow on one of their jerseys despite the colour being on the crest. Their colours are Red-White-Black.

Well, with that being said, I found a very nice template while wandering on ze internet. I didn't really like the way the helmet temp I used contrasted with the 2D template of the kits. And I think it gives the overall a more genuine look. So here's my update on the Manchester Red Devils !

Finally done with City, I've put eagle wings on the shoulders and opted for a darker shade of blue. I've tried to add a touch to the helmet (I've tried clouds to make it look like the sky was flying in the sky, but it rendered kinda... stupid) but just dropped it after poor results. And I think that the light blue-gold scheme is so unique it's okay to keep it the way it is right now.
