Jaybird
NOTICE: Please read this before you decide to post. If you're just going to comment on the logo suggestion, feel free to post. If you're just wanting to make a post that will turn this into a political football, don't bother..As you know, the USPTO said that they would not continue to trademark the name Redskins, and many people on this board have suggested the team go to Warriors, which in fact, owner Daniel Snyder has sent a trade mark on.My suggestion would be to either use a logo of a soldier from the Marines Memorial in Washington (which was taken from a picture of the US Marines raising the American flag at Mt. Suribachi at Iwo Jima). It could either be a composite of the soldiers who raised the flag or (here is my suggestion) model the logo after Ira Hayes, a member of the Pima Nation in Arizona who was immortalized in the song written by Peter LaFarge, "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" (the most famous version being sung by Johnny Cash in 1964).The logo would be the face to the Warrior/Soldier inside of a circle surrounded by laurel leaves. The helmet would be burgundy with the logo being gold and white with burgundy accents.I feel that, this way, the logo would honor both the men and women who fought for our country and put a positive light to the Native Americans. Here are some logo ideas (not done by me) followed by the pictures of the Monument and then of Ira Hayes, followed by a link for Ira's biography and the song by Johnny Cash.Call him drunken Ira HayesHe won't answer anymoreNot the whiskey drinkin' IndianNor the Marine that went to warGather round me people there's a story I would tellAbout a brave young Indian that you should remember wellFrom the tribe of the Pima Indian, a proud and peaceful bandWho farmed the Phoenix valley in Arizona landDown the ditches for a thousand yearsThe water grew Ira's peoples' crops'Til the white man stole the water rightsAnd the sparklin' water stoppedNow Ira's folks were hungryAnd their land grew crops of weedsBut when war came, Ira volunteeredAnd forgot the white man's greedCall him drunken Ira HayesHe won't answer anymoreNot the whiskey drinkin' IndianNor the Marine that went to warThere they battled up Iwo Jima's hillTwo hundred and fifty menBut only twenty-seven livedTo fight back down againAnd when that fight was overAnd when Old Glory raisedAmong the men who held it highWas the Indian, Ira HayesCall him drunken Ira HayesHe won't answer anymoreNot the whiskey drinkin' IndianNor the Marine that went to warIra returned a heroCelebrated through the landHe was wined and speeched and honoredEverybody shook his handBut he was just a Pima IndianNo water, no crops, no chanceAt home nobody cared what Ira had doneAnd when did the Indians danceThen Ira started drinkin' hardJail was often his homeThey'd let him raise the flag and lower itLike you'd throw a dog a boneHe died drunk early one mornin'Alone in the land he fought to saveTwo inches of water in a lonely ditchWas a grave for Ira HayesCall him drunken Ira HayesHe won't answer anymoreNot the whiskey drinkin' IndianNor the Marine that went to warYeah, call him drunken Ira HayesBut his land is just as dryAnd his ghost is lyin' thirstyIn the ditch where Ira diedLink to the song:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX1pLlmMcmk&feature=player_embeddedAgain,please read this before you decide to post. DCarp1231
If the Redskins do change their name I think they would want to stick with a Native American name and logo... Warriors would work for both aspects. Don't get me wrong your concept is a great, but I don't see the Redskins taking that route for a logo.
