Possible NHL Expansion: Logo and Name Ideas

Oso

Recommended Posts

With talks that the NHL may add 4 new teams, bringing back Quebec City and Seattle as markets; and adding Las Vegas as well as a second team in Toronto, it has sparked discussion about what the teams may be called. I am assuming Quebec City will bring back the Nordiques moniker, thus leaving the other three for debate.

What names do you think may be good for the other three potential expansion teams?

Las Vegas Aces as a tie-in to both the casinos and Area 51. Seattle Spirits because the Spirits of the Northwest. Maybe the Seattle Metropolitians so they can say they've won a Stanley Cup. Toronto Galaxy because Toronto is the centre of the universe. Or become the Toronto Toros 2.0.

I've split this discussion off from the Sports in General topic.

Let's keep all talk about the likelihood of expansion or the pros and cons of each market in the original thread. This thread is for discussing possible names and logos for future NHL teams within the context of the rumour that the NHL will expand into Seattle, Los Vegas, Quebec City, and a second Toronto franchise.

I think it's a no brainer for Seattle to be the Metropolitans. You don't just ignore a huge golden ticket opportunity of having won the Stanley Cup (1917) even if it was a completely different organization nearly a century ago. As we've seen from the Sounders, you can adopt past histories quite easily as long as you have the same town/mascot. A back door entrance to the blue bloods.

Quebec Nordiques (Only name needed)

Seattle Metros or Thunderbirds

Seattle, imho, couldn't be Metros---there's a Metropolitan division already.

Thunderbirds is a great name.

Quebec Nordiques would be AWESOME but would the Avs allow it?

The Avalanche better let them have Nordiques name back. They don't use it anyway.

Las Vegas Thunderbirds (The USAF Thunderbirds display team are based in Nevada, and could provide an interesting idea for a new NHL team name.)

Seattle Metros (Kind of modern take on the Metropolitans name, lot of history there)

Toronto Legends (References all the hockey history in Toronto/Ontario)

Quebec Nordiques (Anything else would cause a riot. If Quebec hockey fans took the name as seriously as Jets fans took ours, people would die if they didn't pick that name.)

Here's 5 cities for expansion/relocation excluding Quebec which is a no-brainer.

Seattle - Totems (Great name, crest, and colours from the Western League days. Metropolitans can be used for a Winter/Heritage classic game.)

Hamilton - Steelers (Canada's Steel City. Black dark base and yellow/gold light base is perfect for Hamilton. Tigers can be used for a Winter/Heritage classic game.)

Las Vegas - Aces(Great idea M4One!) I chose purple because of Las Vegas's extravagant nightlife and the NHL needs a full-time purple team.

Portland - Buckaroos(Great name from the Western League Days.)

Kansas City - Anything but Scouts and Sporting.

I smell a lawsuit!

Sporting Venue Count (for games): OHL: 19 (28 Total)- 770 games (after 18-19),

MLB: 13 (15 Total), NHL: 4

Anyone even still alive who would remember that team probably don't even know what hockey is anymore, let alone their name. The Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps, and Earthquakes of the MLS are a little different IMO as people were still alive from those teams playing in the old NASL. I like Totems or Thunderbirds. I remember seeing a concept here a while ago with the Seattle Sea Kings, or something like that. Thought that name fit pretty well for a team from King County.

Seattle Timbers

Portland Timbers would certainly disapprove.

Cardinals -- Rams -- Blues -- Tigers -- Liverpool

I can't find any way that GTA is gonna work out (fan opposition, no arena), so I'm gonna do the others

Quebec - Nordiques (lock)

Seattle - Metros/Totems/Aviators

Vegas - Aces (Gamblers encourages sports betting, GB Gamblers works mainly because the league isn't comparable to the NHL level, obv)

I know what you're getting at. The NFL Steelers would be crying foul, right? Actually, I was just using my proposed colours for a "Hamilton Steelers" team, not the font. I don't think the NFL Steelers would have a problem with Canada's Steel City having an NHL franchise called "Steelers".

Here are other examples: LA Kings - Sacramento Kings, Edmonton Oilers - Houston Oilers(okay, they're distinct), Winnipeg Jets - NY Jets, NY Rangers - Texas Rangers, Florida Panthers - Carolina Panthers.
