Toronto St. Pats

Not gonna happen. The Leafs own the St. Pats intellectual property.
And the Coyotes owned the Jets

Avalanche own Nordiques

They can be bought. It's just a name and $$$$$ is the game.

If they want the St. Pats enough, they will be back. The money would greatly help out the Leafs.

Haha! Good one. The Leafs don't need to sell off their IP to make a buck. They're the richest team in the league.

Anyway the original Jets' records are owned by the Coyotes, but the name and logos were league owned. I suspect the same holds true for the Nords. As for the St. Pats? The Leafs consider both the Arenas and the St. Pats part of their history. They're not going to allow any other team to use the name. Any ownership group that wants to set up a second Toronto team would have to come crawling to them begging for mercy as is. They'd be in no position to ask for the St. Pats name.

Totem, Metro, and St. Pat's are all terrible names. With Totem, the obvious logo is going to be a totem pole and that is not going to look good. Metro sounds like a city rec league team and why would you want to be have the original name of your competitors which they aren't going to give up anyways. And it's a horrible, horrible name. Leave history in the past and live in the now.

After giving it some more thought, I still say Aces would be tops for Las Vegas (whether a team in Vegas makes sense in the first place). Second could be Renegades. For Toronto, how about Blizzard since the last few winters have been horrible there. And if the team is going to be in Hamilton, it should be the Steelheads.

Sigh. I REALLY hate the idea that a Vegas team could have the name Aces. First off, it's snatching at such low-hanging fruit to pick a name so incredibly lazy and one dimensional. It also supports the ridiculous theory that the only thing that's ever been important in the state of Nevada is gambling. I get it. Card and dice games are huge out there, but it's not the only thing about the state that's noteworthy. That's the most annoying thing about Nevada. They actually have quite an important history when it comes to how the west was built, yet the only thing they ever care to promote is bright and noisy slot machines and colorful wheels with numbers on it. It's such an affront on the true culture of the state, that it makes me wonder why they they even bothered ever teaching us about the state's history when we were kids. Nobody cares. Not even the people in Nevada. And on top of that, even though they're just a AAA team, there is already a pro sports team up in Reno called the Aces.

I'm sure some will disagree, but as a history major and as someone who grew up in the state, it's really disappointing.

It also could have a double meaning. Nellis AFB is home to more squadrons than any other base in the Air Force and the 57th wing is the most diverse.

Granted with the name Flyers and Jets already in use, a third aeronautical name may be overkill but the term Ace doesn't necessarily have to be aimed to the gambling industry.

Some other names for the Vegas team:

Lions: would be fitting, especially to tie them with the new MGM arena they would play in.

Wranglers: The identity is already one people in Vegas are familiar with. Some say Wranglers wouldn't fit for a pro team. I disagree.

Bighorns: State animal of Nevada. Good marketing possibilities.

Cubs fans don't get to bust Leafs fans' chops on that one ;)

Anyway it's irrelevant. The Leafs are the richest team in the NHL. Look it up. They won't need the money that would come from selling the St. Pats name. Especially not after the ownership group for the second Toronto team pays them a hefty sum just for the right to set up shop in the GTA.

Why would you bring back the old Tigers nickname only to call them the Ontario Tigers instead of the Hamilton Tigers? I know a Hamilton team would rely on a mishmash of Southern Ontario municipalities, but referring to their team as "Ontario" just seems so weak, especially with two teams in the province already.

I don't know why "Evergreens" doesn't get more traction as a potential Seattle nickname. Washington is the Evergreen State, so there's your local flair without going to the PNW native imagery that the Canucks are currently half-assing. Calling a Seattle team the Thunder is astoundingly tone-deaf, but you were probably just making a joke. If you weren't, try claiming you were.

Is Hamilton in the GTA? Do they have an NHL ready arena?

They are not in the political municipality called the GTA, but they are in the Toronto area. Hamilton is Toronto's Newark.

Is Hamilton in the GTA? Kinda not really yeah they are.

Part of the confusion stems from the GTA's nature as a sort of shapeless urban sprawl that consumes lesser municipalities before it.

And calling a team "Ontario" doesn't work for me.

I believe the entirety of the Ontario sprawl is the "Golden Horseshoe" whereas the GTA ends before Hamilton and after Oshawa. Or before Oshawa. One or the other. Hamilton seems to get Toronto's television and radio, though, with a few radio stations of their own.
