I wouldn't rule out alternate black. Maybe just not that one we all thought it would be.

What if they did a white version of their current orange jerseys?

I would prefer it to be cream, but that could look great. I don't really like having alternates that are the same color as the primaries, but if they wanted to test market it as a precursor to a full-time switch, then sure.

Could they bring a black alt similar to this old one?

I might get smacked for saying this, but IMO the Padres are one team that could possibly pull off a cream jersey quite well. Obviously it shouldn't be a simple carbon copy of their regular home jersey, but if done right, I think it could be a good change.

My mind goes to their former triple-A affiliate, the Portland Beavers:

Though a departure from their trademark red and black scheme, this set was a great spin on the unis of decades long past, and at the same time it meshed well with the parent club's identity without being a straight-up copy.

Again, I'm one of the brown-and-gold lovers. But honestly, it'll never work at Petco, and I think they do just fine with it as a near-regular alternate. Some cream and thick piping, if all done right, could look gorgeous in that downtown ballpark.

I really don't get why people say so often that the Padres can't switch to brown and yellow because of the colors of the park. It's a baseball park! It doesn't have to match their uniforms! Since the neo-retro craze, the seats and walls in parks have been predominately green. Around 2000, parks started going to dark blue. Granted, many teams use blue. But green walls are used by the Phillies, Tigers, Indians, Red Sox, Orioles, Angels, Rangers and White Sox, among others, and none of those teams use green in their uniforms. Blue walls and seats are pretty neutral, and wouldn't clash at all with the uniforms. We heard the same thing with people saying the Astros couldn't change to navy and orange, but they look fine in their park with that scheme.

Honestly, other than just bricks, what park color scheme would go with brown and yellow uniforms? Nobody is going to use brown walls. Maybe they could switch the walls to an army-ish medium brown/tan, kinda like a '40s throwback look. That wouldn't necessitate them changing the seats, since many parks (Pittsburgh, Philly) have different colors on the seats and walls).

It's not necessarily just the stadium though; it's the surrounding area as well. I think I've said this before, but I'll pull it out again: back when the Pads wore brown and gold, they played at Jack Murphy/Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley, hence the brown representing the friar's robe and the gold representing the mission bell. But now at Petco Park in the Gaslamp Quarter, they're basically right on the water, in the shadow of the Coronado Bridge, so now the general feel is more of a "surf's up, let's hit the waves" Padres.

This may be coming from an outsider, but I've been to Petco a couple of times and that's definitely how I perceive it. But still, no excuse for the bland set they've got right now. The original '04 set was darn near perfect: the sand, the road script, and even the custom number font.

If they wanted that, fine, change the name to the Waves or Surf. But if you're a team called the Padres, keep with the friar's robe brown and gold. Except that Friars don't always wear brown

He did say "quite often", which means not all the time. He said that the Franciscans "often" wore blue-grey, probably in an attempt to try and turn the narrative of the brown vs navy debate by claiming the stuff they wear now is more "authentic" then the brown. Which is pretty disengenous.

While your Google search does uncover some blue-grey clad Franciscans it would be a mistake to say they "often" wear that colour. The vast majority of those Google pics, as well as the pics from the order's own flippin' website, show the friars in question wearing brown.

I'd say blue/grey robes is a stretch. At most they are grey but still brown is predominant. I did find some documentation that said the original friars in California wore grey, not brown. But, in viewing paintings of Fr. Junipero Serra (one of the most famous in San Diego) I'd say the majority show him in a brown robe. I'd say the "mind's eye" of most though think of Franciscans in brown, not blue/grey.

Even St. Francis himself is usually shown in brown robes. So if the guy who started the Franciscan Friars and the original Padres of San Diego wore brown, you can't really say the reasoning for blue is the Friars.
