NCAA Women's Volleyball Concepts -- Wisconsin Badgers

Recommended Posts

I've been taking a break from my soccer concepts, and I've been searching for a concept series I could do that I could put together in the limited time that I currently have. As some of you are likely aware, I like to do concept series that aren't overly conventional, so I was looking for something to do that I don't remember ever seeing on these boards. My inspiration hit a few weeks back while watching a women's volleyball game. I figured that it would be perfect because (1) I love the sport and (2) it's a rather untapped topic.

Obviously, because this isn't common, there really aren't many (or any) templates, so I created one myself (as shown with a nike cut)

This series will look to cover most of the Top 25 teams in the nation, and will complete every team in the B1G and Pac 12 conferences (since they are the two overwhelmingly dominant conferences).

First up, the defending national champion Penn State Nittany Lions.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

Penn State's women's volleyball team are the current defending champions of the NCAA, having won it's 5th championship since 2007. Widely considered one of the greatest volleyball programs of all time, if not the best. The school is one of the few teams to have never missed the NCAA tournament since its introduction in 1981, and has compiled a 1,033-164 record under legendary coach Russ Rose (The team has finished below .500 once, during its first season in 1976).

This uniform design is tricky, since Penn State generally has such a reserved style in most of its uniforms. Currently, the team wears plain uniforms, white at home and navy blue on the road (fun fact, I can't find a single picture of the blue jerseys), with navy shorts, while the libero wears navy blue at home and white on the road, also with navy shorts.

In order to fit with the school's aesthetic, while sufficiently honoring such a storied program, the design needed to be simple while containing a distinct flair.

PrimaryUniforms_zps49a2894d.png

The primary uniform set continues the white at home, blue on the road theme, but adds contrasting colored shoulders to the design. These shoulders are cut out on the sleeves. Penn State's signature design on many uniforms is a single stripe, which the cutout emulates. Rather than just having sleeve stripes, this design simulates them with a unique, modern design that is inspired by previously worn uniforms. According to NCAA uniform rules, either the libero or the rest of the team must wear plain colored jersey (though new rules allow for colored piping). Since the normal uniforms contain a design, the libero wears a plain navy jersey at home, and plain white on the road.

Each year, every Penn State women's teams hold a "Pink Out" game in support of cancer awareness (as many universities do). Because this occurs each season, and because the volleyball team generally wears pink accessories, even with regular uniforms, this alternate uniform was added to the official set. It keeps the same design, and the libero continues to wear the plain Navy jersey.

In order to add more to the uniform design, the back features a sublimated image (much like nike basketball uniforms do). Penn State currently has a zig zag pattern upon the back, but this new design gives a stronger representation of the school.

On the left is the official design, while the right will be utilized to better describe each of the elements.

GREEN- The Lion Shrine, a landmark at PSU located directly outside Rec Hall, where the team plays its matches.

RED- The six roses represent the six championships the team has won under coach Russ Rose.

BLUE- The Keystone, a symbol of Pennsylvania, and PSU, the state's largest public university.

PURPLE- The rafters of Rec Hall, under which the team plays its matches, and where the team's banners hang.

ORANGE- A minimalist representation of Mount Nittany, from which the university derives its mascot.

--------------------------------------------------------

Finally, to put it all together, I've included three action shots, featuring the squads veteran players Megan Courtney (home), Nia Grant (away), and Micha Hancock (alt).

With that, I turn this over to you. Do your thing and C+C it up.

Great idea for a thread. I believe volleyball is a very underrated sport. My youth group and I play occasional pick-up games which are pretty fun.

Anyway, as for the design. the look is very clean with nothing over the top - Something that suits Penn State very well. I also like the sublimated design on the back. Nice job overall! I'll be watching this thread closely.

Must say I've never seen anything like this here before so kudos on a unique concept series. You made a great start with that template. Well done!

The simplicity of your Penn State concept is really nice. Fits in well with the tradition of the school and the looks of the other sports. My little problem is the way all the elements of the sublimated image seem thrown together. It also seems quite busy. Especially with those roses. I like the thought and symbolism behind it all, just feel it may be a little much for my tastes. Just my opinion though. Keep up the great work!

I'm sure McCall will be drooling over this series :P Keep going with the action shots too :D

Awesome presentation, sweet template. My younger sister plays (high school) volleyball and it's a big part of her life so I sometimes watch the games on TV with her and my dad. Can't wait till you get to my U-M and UDub, when I'll probably be more defensive/feel more authority to give C&C.

As for these Penn State unis, what was the reasoning behind the cut-outs on the sleeves? First thing it made me think of, with it breaking up the shoulder/arm stripe, was Adidas's MLS template, which seems odd for a Nike uni

I completely agree. I'm surprised that I've never seen this done before on here. This is really a great idea and you should definitely stick with it. As for the Penn State concept? Very well done. Simple, yet effective. Great work!

Wow... I truly was not expecting nearly this many. Thanks a bunch to everyone who has commented so far! I'm gonna do my best to respond to as many comments as possible.

I've gotta agree with you on both counts. I've always found it frustrating that I can't put too many pick-up games together with friends... Of course, I've been known to play for 6-8 hours at a time, haha.

Great idea. Unique concept and I like how you're putting them into lice action shots.

Underlined- I definitely see where you are coming from with the amount in the image. I plan to vary the amount that will show up in different sublimations for different teams. As a PSU student, I really found it hard not to pack everything in there. This last one only contains about half of what I originally had.

Italicized- Well, if the PSU players don't mind being proposed to, I'd bet I could put a good word in for him. :P

Bolded- Things have been rough on the boards since the removal of Babe of the Week, huh? Have I inadvertently made my thread its replacement?

Underlined- Well, I'm always for people getting defensive over their schools. Hopefully I'll leave you with no criticisms.

Bolded- The cut out sleeves were a modern interpretation of the traditional single stripe that PSU uses. It combines the design of previous volleyball uniforms while giving it a unique feel.

I think it has a lot to do with volleyball being a relatively obscure sports (when not being played in the olympics), combined with the fact that it's a women's sport. I don't think I can count the number of concept threads based around women's sports on more than one hand since I joined the site. I'm glad that it seems to be popular... of course, I'm pretty sure it's partially due to the action shots (I'm onto you guys... :suspect:).

Do Illinios next! Great work on Penn State Illinois should translate perfectly into that template

While I can't promise that Illinois will be next, its #12 ranking nationally and B1G membership means it'll likely be popping up sooner than later! I've already got a few ideas.

Once again, thanks for all the comments so far! I'm extremely busy for the next two days, but hopefully I've have something for you guys this weekend!

  • 2 months later...

It's been awhile, but I've got an update to the series with team #2, the 2013 National Runner-Up Wisconsin Badgers, who made a surprising run to the National Final after defeating several favored teams, before losing to Penn State. This made the 12th seeded Badgers the lowest seed to make the championship game.

UNIFORMS

Currently, the Badgers wear rather templated uniforms, featuring red/white side panels with black sleeves. Since black is a major component of the actual uniforms, I chose to feature it in my design, though in a more reserved fashion. The black also serves to help further separate Wisconsin from Nebraska.

The Badgers are outfitted by adidas, featuring the company's triple stripe upon the back of the neck. The main feature of the uniforms are stylized striping on the sleeves forming a W. The front of the jerseys feature the team name above the team number, a design that numerous schools utilize.

I also present two action shots. The home features sophomore setter Lauren Carlini; the road features senior outside hitter Ellen Chapman.
