infrared41's Best and Worst of the Week - NFL Week 2

Week one was filled with controversy and mod edits. Let's see if we can do better in week two, folks.

Another fairly average week. A couple great games, a couple good games, and fortunately for us, only one truly ugly game. No disasters this week. So without further adieu, let's get to the games...

Best: We had another very tight battle for the #1 spot and a real shocker at #5.

1. Jets at Packers: As I mentioned last week, the Jets have one of the best all-white looks in the league. The Packers have one of the best looks in football. Throw them together and we have uniform perfection. Games don't look any better than this.

2. Saints at Browns: Fortunately, the Saints didn't ruin this classic by going mono-black. Even better, the Browns didn't ruin it by wearing their God-awful brown pants. Sadly, this is probably the last season we'll be able to enjoy these wonderful Browns uniforms - at least until the requisite 5 years pass at which point the Browns will realize the awful mistake they made by "modernizing" and return to these classics.

3. Bears at 49ers: (fixing a glaring omission on my part) The Bears have the best home look in the NFL. The Bears road look, while pretty good, isn't in the same ballpark as their home look. If any team needs to go to all white on the road, it's the Bears. Don't get me wrong, I think the Bears road uniform is definitely in the upper tier, but all white would be much better. That, and I think it makes them look a little wimpy. That said, the Bears road look combined with the perfect 49ers uniform makes this a top three game. Put the Bears in all white and this one goes straight to #1.

4. Eagles at Colts: Overall, the Eagles look is one that I consider above average, but not great. It's OK. But I do really like their all-white look. In my opinion, it's the best combo they have. The Colts always look great. This game turned out to be a lot better looking than I thought it would. I figured the Eagles would be wearing the green pants. They didn't and thank goodness.

628x471.jpg

5. Lions at Panthers: One of the side effects of teams ruining "modernizing" their uniforms is that looks that were once considered average start to look better. It's improvement through attrition, I guess. Case in point: the Detroit Lions. The Lions don't have an awful look, but it's still a few tweaks from being a great look. Yet thanks to teams like Tampa Bay, the Lions move up on the best list simply because the Bucs look horrible. Anyway, the Panthers look good and the Lions looked OK. In an average week like this one, that's good enough for the #5 spot on the best list.

Honorable mention: Seahawks at Chargers: No, that's not a typo. No, I'm not high. Normally, I'm not a fan of the look of either of these looks. The Seahawks are a regular member of my worst list. The Chargers are so boring that they never make either list. But there was something about this game. It just looked good to me. The Seahawks went with the best possible combo of a really bad uniform, and damn if the Chargers in all white wasn't the perfect look to offset Seattle. Separately, neither of these looks are likely to make the best list, but throw them together and somehow it works. Yeah, I'm as shocked as you are. B)

Worst: Only one ugly game this week - and it was ugly in every possible way.

1. Rams at Buccaneers: What else needs to be said about the Bucs? How about this? Their numbers remind me of a digital watch I got for Christmas - back in the early 80's. The Rams have a perfectly fine look that they insist on ruining by wearing those horrible blue pants.

That's it for this week. We'll have another exciting/infuriating edition next week.

I really like the Seahawks uniforms when they wear gray pants.

The Chargers all-white bothers me because they have 4 of their 6 bolts on blue backgrounds. The inconsistency is dumbfounding. It would look terrific if they either had a blue helmet with a bolt that matched the color scheme of the bolts on the jerseys and pants or, and this is what I'd prefer, if the bolt just always appeared on a white background. It's a very easy solution to the problem they created for themselves.

Surprised Bengals-Falcons didn't make the worst list.

I don't mind the Seahawks look when they wear gray pants. It's not great, but it's not the worst look in the league either.

The Falcons look is low level OK. The Bengals don't look entirely awful in all white. If I had a "least offensive match up of bad uniforms" list, that game would have been on it. B) Actually, that's not a bad idea. Maybe I'll add that next week.

Infrared, I assume you're one of the people who preferred the previous 49ers set? Because even with their messed-up sleeve stripes, they still have a great overall look. I'd rank Bears-Niners at the top of my list for the week.

Nope. I much prefer the 49ers current look. Honestly, I flat out forgot about that one. The list will be edited accordingly.

Yeah because that's a clear #1

Go A's!

1. Packers-Jets: Good.

2. Browns-Saints: Good.

3. Colts-Eagles: OK.

4. Lions-Panthers: Nope. Too much sameness. Silver helmets. Dueling light shades of blue accented by black/silver. Not enough there for me to agree.

5. Chargers-Seahawks: Definite Nope. I flat out HATE the Chargers all white look. Hate it. Maybe it's the lightning bolt thing McCarthy brought up, but to me they're too white. It looks like they're wearing old-style long johns. Just an all-white jumpsuit from head to toe. Now funnily enough, I think their AFL throwback from a few years ago was gorgeous, but these I can't get behind. No sir.

And yeah, 49ers-Bears needs to get on your list. You're slipping, Greg. :P

Infrared has finally admitted that the Seahawks look good. Rejoice! Rejoice!

Actually what he said was he didn't mind the Seahawks when they wore gray pants with their navy jerseys. As in, that is their best possible look, compared to their usual bad look. And I agree. It's still firmly in the bottom half of the NFL because of the screwed up color balance and silly over use of gimmicky details, but it's the best they can do with their current options.

The fact still remains that the Seahawks preferred look is navy/navy/navy. A bottom five uniform IMO.

I just posted in the other best of the week thread, but this is pretty much what I think about the Seahawks too. It's a shame they don't wear gray pants with the home jerseys more often.

I don't think it makes them look wimpy. If anything, the all-white plays tricks with your eyes and makes the players look bigger. Always a good thing, one would have to think. Off the top of my head, the Bears, Bills, Browns, Colts, and Jets all look good in lots of white. Probably a few others, but I'm out of the loop on football.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Not going to say anything I haven't said here before.

All white with a colored helmet on top is one of the quintessential old football team looks.

Chicago+Bears+v+Green+Bay+Packers+zKRYfd

But I don't like it for the Bears because the pants stripe competes with the sleeves and socks. And I don't want the Bears to carry a separate pair of white pants for road games with a stripe that matches their sleeves and socks so keeping the blue pants it is.

On to the problem I have with the blue pants: I don't like how the blue pants use an orange-white-orange stripe when their socks and sleeves use a white-orange-white stripe on a blue background.

Look to the white jerseys of their ice hockey brothers for inspiration. The Blackhawks use black-white-red-white-black stripes on the sleeves, hem, and socks, and then that stripe is translated to the pants. It looks great. The Bears should do the same with their blue pants.

here's a visual aide that I've posted before

Infrared, I'm noticing a trend in your opinion and I want to get confirmation on this: Do you always prefer a team to wear white pants with white jerseys when a team has more than one pants options?

I love the Bears' navy pants. I was ticked when they started wearing white on the road full-time in 2001. Seeing videos of the Bears from the '80s, and them winning their lone Super Bowl in that look, it's classic to me. The Bears-Niners looked like a classic match-up. I think the stripes on the pants don't have to match the sleeves, just the helmet (if applicable). As for the pants stripes matching the sock stripes, that's getting a little too cute. The Bears navy pants feature a classic football striping pattern with white on the inside. Flipping white and orange makes it look odd.

I will add that if the Bears do wear white pants on the road, it looks better with navy socks, as they always wore prior to getting navy pants in 1984.
