UMass Lowell new hockey uniforms

My alma mater has new uniforms:

Old uniforms:

rp_primary_River_Hawk_of_the_Week_Campbe

rp_primary_UML_BC_Feb21_2014_0603.jpg

They kept the stacked wordmark on the new uniforms.

I think the uniforms are a downgrade, especially the UA catalog numeral font. I think the same-colored yokes with stripes was an interesting idea, but it doesn't look good in practice, especially with sleeve stripes. I do like that the striping is more consistent across uniforms, though. (Now if they can match it on the shorts...)

I'm a UML alum as well and personally I think this new set is an upgrade.

Last year it looked like they updated the nameplates to a standard block font from the previous font, but kept the same font for the numbers, which just din't really work for me.

I like the new font much better, just for the fact that it's not italicized alone.

That said, still not a fan of the stacked wordmark for the crest. I'd prefer they go back to the arched "LOWELL" across the front instead.

Always thought they had one of the worst identities in D1 hockey, that tradition continues with the new set. The striping is fine but the wordmark crest and logo on the sleeve are atrocious.

Granted, it's not the greatest logo by any stretch of the imagination, but it would look better on the front than that weird wordmark. Other than that, they seem fine.

I think most if not all NCAA teams have the name or initials of the school on the front. I guess it's easier to identify them that way.

I liked the previous blue uni's. They were basically the Bruins but with red white and blue rather than black white and yellow/gold.

For a brief period after getting these, they wore the red socks.

I liked the red socks with the blue jersey and pants. It was even more Bruins like since the B's have black pants and jersey with yellow socks.

The white uni's were a copy of the Canadiens.

rileywetmore.jpgThe former road uni's were red and pretty much a Blachawk copy.

I don't mind the new UA uni's though. Not terrible by any means. I like the white ones. I miss the red yoke on the blue jersey.

I didn't even know they switched to Under Armour this season. UML had worn Bauer/Nike for quite a few seasons after moving to Tsongas. I figured they would go with Gemini Athletic, like much of the other teams in Hockey East.

I think the current set up is better, since you should have dark text on a white jersey, not white text. But red could be used more...the team is totally emphasizing the blue over everything else, but so many other teams are blue (UNH, Maine, Merrimack, Notre Dame, UConn), that red-white-blue is unique to the league.

The older number font worked better, since it matched the wordmarks (without the excessive Phoenix Design bevels). But the nameplate font was odd, didn't match anything, but wasn't a standard block font either.

I still have my older blue jersey with the descending "Lowell", with vertically arched 3-d lettering.

I think they've switched to UA for almost everything, if not everything. I do know that their field hockey team also wears that same numeral font, and their basketball teams wear UA jerseys that they introduced last year. My hunch is that it must coincide with the move of the entire athletics program to Division I and the America East Conference.

I do think that the red could (and should) be used more, but UML made a conscious decision in about 2009 or so to emphasize the blue. The ice hockey road uniforms held out as red the longest, until Blaise MacDonald got fired as head coach and Norm Bazin got hired. (That said, Bazin has led the UML team to unprecedented success, and I couldn't be prouder!)

I agree with crlachepinochet that the hawk head would be miles above the stacked wordmark as the crest. I wonder if some of our more enlightened members can answer the question as to whether there's a rule in place that says that the school's name has to be included..

On an interesting note, the school is selling replicas of both this year's AND last year's ice hockey sweaters. http://www.bkstr.com/umass-lowellstore/shop/apparel-and-accessories/mens/jerseys

It is prevalent, no doubt, but it doesn't seem to be a rule. Michigan sometimes uses the M, Minnesota seems to only/mostly use their M on the front, Boston College uses a diagonal "Eagles" sometimes. There are two local D-1 programs (Canisius and Niagara) that use a logo crest to varying degrees.

Actually, a pretty good number of schools have a stand-alone logo or a logo with the school or nickname...

LSSU - anchor with Lakers

Ferris State - bulldog head

Alaska-Anchorage - seawolf

Minnesota State - bull (maverick)

Penn State - lion head

Michigan Tech - huskie head

Minnesota-Duluth - bulldog head below UMD

Colorado College - tiger head

RIT - tiger head and RIT

Niagara - purple eagle

North Dakota - Indian-head below SIOUX (old)

Providence - skating friar below PROVIDENCE

UAH - charger (horse head) below UAH

Those are just off the top of my head...

Good to know. Most of those schools don't play UML on the regular, so I haven't followed that. Providence does have the school name on it, though.

Yes, I pointed PC out because it has a logo on the front below PROVIDENCE, not just the name of the school on the jersey.
