tbdaniel15 Posted October 22, 2014 Share Posted October 22, 2014 With Major League Baseball's minor league systems playing a critical role in their development, and the D League somewhat recently becoming a successful component of the NBA, I thought it would be fun to see what it might look like if the NFL joined this trend and created a development league themselves. So without further to do, here is a long project in the making, the PFL: The Progressive Football League. Complete with 16 franchises spanning the length of the entire country (and then some), the PFL aims to work as a competitive organization that allows athletes that are not quite ready for the professional rankings to continue their development and gain preparation for NFL. Below we get a grasp of what the league is all about, showing how the teams are organized, as well as the basic specifications for each franchise. It is important to note that these teams aren't associated with specific NFL franchises, but rather just a separate, lower league that gives athletes experience before, if deemed ready, being called up to the big time. One thing of note though, it looks as though the push pin for Tulsa is sitting in the middle of Kansas instead of Oklahoma. Also, I find it interesting that you picked Nashville since it already has an NFL team. I don't think any of the other ones you chose are in NFL cities (Kane County is close to Chicago though). To answer your questions, SC is an abbreviation for South Carolina, and you were right in your assumption. Just not enough room to fit it! The original name was intended to be the Charleston Palmettos, but I later changed it to better fit the name since the nickname is associated with the state itself. As for Redding, honestly I just really like the way the name flows with the Rapids as the nickname. Population was a concern, however. I started this project back in February by making a table with possible locations and their populations. Redding was definitely one of the smaller markets (around 91,000), but is actually the second smallest behind Daytona Beach. I figured a market like these two would take on a role of an Oklahoma City and really embrace a franchise despite its size. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

(No bengal tigers live within 15,000 miles of Cincinnati, and I could go on with other examples.) In my opinion, the name Killer Whales is clunky, though. I would go with Orcas instead. I do like the primary and secondary logos; good job with them. I think the logo would work even better if you renamed them the Orcas, because then the O/circle part of the logo would naturally fit. Right now I don't know why it exists.Also, I have to ask: What is going on with the pants? It looks as if the back a different color from the front. Is that right? If so, please reconsider. In my opinion, it would not work well on a football field.In a concept I don't have a problem with putting teams wherever you want. Everyone, remember that this is just a concept; it isn't an actual proposal. The locations don't need to be the most practical. If practicality were an issue, the league teams should all be within several hundred miles of each other so they could take buses to the games. It's awfully generic, and I don't like the wordmark on the pants or the fact that the back of the pants is a different color. I agree that mascots don't HAVE to be logically native to their area, but we're in a different naming climate than we were when most of our classic names (like the Bengals) were chosen by their teams. As a culture, we're just more sophisticated in our awareness of team names, and have a platform (twitter,facebook, et al) to whine about it when it doesn't make logical sense. That said, it's YOUR league, so have fun with it and ignore any nit-picky suggestions like this. Myself, I'd make the incongruity part of the charm of the team, and the 'controversy' part of its branding history.
