Fox Sports reports that a probe inside the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill reveals that over three thousand students within the past 20 years at the University have participated in academic dishonesty. This includes tutors writing their papers for them, signing up for classes in which they do not have to attend, fake grades, etc. Over half of these students have been or currently are athletes at the University as well. I see coach's heads on the chopping block and heavy sanctions handed down to the Tar Heels, mainly in basketball and football.

At what point is a university's credibility to be questioned? If this has been going on for so long and to such a great extent I have a hard time believing it's an issue with athletics solely.

Since this issue was started on the academic side of campus, not the athletic department, there is not going to be a coach fired. In 1998, Crowder begins offering the paper classes under the guise of traditional lecture classes on her own.

Sylvia Hatchell, Roy Williams, Anson Dorrance, Mike Fox or even those newer to the program like Larry Fedora are not getting fired.

The AD for the majority of the was Dick Baddour, who is now retired and left during the Butch Davis scandal(s). Current AD Bubba Cunnungham has been there since. The majority of the UNC-CH management team is also new.

This was the third of three investigations, the first of which was conducted by a former NC governor in 2012 which this new report refutes.

I think you need to read the Executive Summary, if not, read parts of the report which will back up your claim.

That is what SACS is there for.

SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) is the accreditation agency for the southeast and last year, they were not sanctioned, however this report may re-open their investigation.

I wonder if this will lead to the examination of most Division I "Factory Schools", like Florida State, the SEC sans Vanderbilt, etc.

And that would be done by whom and for what reason?

By whom: Those in charge of accrediting US colleges and universities.

For what reason: To show that the "Student-Athlete" myth is applicable to only a few colleges.

That is not a national agency, there are just regional ones for non-profit higher education institutions. The Department of Education does not get involved.in accreditation and/or reaffirmation (states rights). There is no national control over postsecondary educational institutions in thie USA.

So, as I mentioned before in post #4 it goes back to SACS.

UNC-CH goes back under its review again in the 2015-16 academic year. SACS will most likely wait until them to rule.

Where did I mention the Department of Education? I never mentioned a specific agency.

I'll say this:

Experience is telling me that there this one school isn't even the tip of the iceberg: it's just a small chip. School years 1982-83 I wrote papers for a friend and his teammates at a large football power in the Midwest: it helped pay rent and my Spring Break trip. If I was doing it long distance, I can imagine "tutors" and others doing the same in 2014.

How bad are they gonna be sanctioned for this? Utter embarrassment on the university.

Since UNC doesn't play for the PAC-12 the academic department and not the athletic department initiated these bogus academias, the NCAA will probably give athletics a slap on the wrist, whatever the hell that'll amount to.

Honestly, them even getting something as severe as a two year sports ban wouldn't be nearly as bad as if they were to lose their accreditation. This is WAY beyond sports at this point.

If you're waiting for the accreditation agency to do something, don't hold your breath. Liberty teaches its biology students that the Earth is roughly 6000 years old and remains at the SACS' highest accreditation tier.

I don't know who would be charged under what law, but the federal government has a stake in this. Only about half of the students were athletes, so there were very likely Pell grants and other federal financial aid used by those students not on an athletic scholarship.

This is why I've been more or less done with college sports for the last few years.

It hasn't been about education in decades if it ever even was to start with.

I have a hard time believing that UNC was a bad apple in otherwise prestige orchard. From a pure athletics perspective I would say the most heinous crime they committed was getting caught and because of that, the cost of doing business is about to go up But that's about it.

If and when the day comes where the school stands to lose more then a few dollars and some games, then you'll actually see them get serious about putting an end to this. Until then though, don't expect the school or the NCAA to do anything outside of slapping some wrists.

The federal government is not going to get involved. It'd cost more to litigate and return the dollars back to the government than what the grants and aid cost.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.
