I was under the impression that the pants were either rolled up or they only go to the knee.I would assume that it's like wearing normal everyday pants. jch Posted October 28, 2014 Share Posted October 28, 2014 I don't think the reason you see the pajama look throughout MLB has anything to do with comfort. I think it's all a "look" thing. Having said that, I played in an adult baseball league up until last summer and I had 2 pairs of pants - one white and one gray. The gray ones were shorter and a little tighter so I wore them bunched under the knee with high socks. The white ones were longer and baggier so I wore them in the pajama look. When I played in high school I wore my pants down to my shoes because then I could hide that my socks weren't pulled up to my knees. It made sliding hurt a little more because it was less protection, but the increased comfortability the other 99% of the time was well worth it. Meanwhile, in football it's in style to have zero sleeves and have the tightest uniform possible. Basketball is kinda in between. The last five years have seen the jerseys get tighter, but the shorts are still gigantic and as clownish as ever.Seeing as it's just a trend, I figure at some point in the next decade, baseball uniforms will get more form-fitting again. Just look at men's fashion in general over the last decade, as we're wearing fitted shirts and no more baggy jeans. I just hope that when baseball goes back to tighter fits, player don't take it to the lengths of football players and act as if they can't possibly swing a bat if their armpit hair isn't exposed. You don't see players wearing the same huge shorts in the NBA that they do in college and the jerseys seem to fit better. I think the NBA has reached a good fit equilibrium. In the 80's and early 90's the uniforms were comically tight. In the 90's they overcorrected and everyone went huge. Now I think it's in a good place and basketball uniforms (except for the sleeved jerseys) look the best they've ever looked. Fit wise. I agree predict that baseball will move back towards tighter pants because that's the way all men's fashions are going. See someone wearing loose pants these days and he just looks like an idiot that doesn't know how to dress himself. I played baseball up through high school and I preferred to wear my pants baggy because I found it more comfortable. Partly for the reason McCarthy laid out, partly because I found the baggy cut to, surprisingly, be less restraining. I was the same with hockey. Goalies wear sweaters that are specifically cut to be baggy, but I preferred baggy clothes even under my pads. I would forgoe UnderArmour-style shirts and pants for baggy long sleeve t-shirts and baggy sweat pants I would tuck into my skates. But football isn't just a trend, it's evolved to today's fit because of player preference. Football players, specifically nfl players have altered their jerseys for years because less extra material feels better especially when you play a position that comes in contact with an opposing player every play. Personally Idk how people can play comfortably in huge baggy basketball shorts. I hate when shorts are below the top of my knee. However I wore really tight baseball pants in high school (bc I didn't wanna buy better ones) and they were not very comfortable. That material is better suited to be worn a little loose. I may be progressive in some aspects, but this is one area where I'm a staunch traditionalist; I have no problem wearing stirrups and high pants if possible when playing baseball.
