Biggest upgrades/downgrades

I'm sure this has been done before but here's the questions: What are some of the biggest upgrades and downgrades in team identity history?

The best upgrade has to be the Blue Jays, they went from a joke of an identity to one of the best in pro sports. The worst off the top of my head are probably the Buccaneers and Hurricanes, both went form modern classics to something either hideous or unspeakably bland.

Phillies, Bears, and new NYFC fan.

The Blue Jays went from a unique and gorgeous color scheme, to a boring and predictable one. All they had to do was scale back the black and gray and allow that nice blue to dominate, and redesign the over-the-top logos and script. They played it safe with an updated version of the old uni only because they fouled up so bad with the previous attempts.

Although I appreciate your opinion, the current colour scheme and design screams BLUE JAYS BASEBALL. I do agree that the previous iteration with the graphite was a nice design, but it didn't fit the Blue Jays brand. The current blue colours are what the Jays are about from the Lloyd Moseby/Barfield days. And the design brings back memories of the World Series wins!

If they went from the old uni to this updated version, I don't think anybody would be trying to start a movement to change it. However, if they did a better job on the previous unis, those probably could have lasted and become just as an important part of the Blue Jays brand.

Upgrades:

  • MLB: Toronto Blue Jays (2012-pres) and it's not even close
  • NFL: Minnesota Vikings (2013-pres) because it's classic but with a modern touch (which I love)
  • NBA: Brooklyn Nets because of a unique color scheme (we've seen black and silver but not just black and white) and simplicity. Also considered the new Charlotte Hornets identity.
  • NHL: LA Kings: I've always view them as a black and silver franchise and the new identity is perfect for them.
  • NCAA Football: Of all the 128 FBS teams, I chose Utah State (2011-pres) because they nailed the mix and match style uniforms but they don't go overboard. Plus they hardly ever have a bad look (All-Navy, Stormtrooper, Navy tops and jerseys w/ gray pants, etc). Another school would be either Minnesota (2011-pres) or Louisville (2013).

Downgrades:

  • MLB: Miami Marlins: They lost their unique color in teal and the logo is a complete disaster.
  • NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers: At least the Jags look good shoulder down, but the new Bucs uniforms have no redeeming points.
  • NBA: New Orleans Pelicans: So much potential wasted on a bland uniform.
  • NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning: Outside of the black outline, they look far to similar to the Maple Leafs IMO.
  • NCAA Football: Every. Single. Nebraska. Alternate: Why mess with tradition. It's one thing when a smaller school like Louisville or Cincinnati would wear the crazy alts, but when it's a school like Nebraska it's just looks plain ridiculous.

Well we're discussing biggest downgrades, not "worst recent changes", so I'd argue that the Jaguars last change - from the Fred Taylor / Jimmy Smith uniforms to the MJD set was a way bigger downgrade than their most recent switch. They went from near perfect to very bad, then from very bad to even worse. Near perfect to very bad wins.

Of course even that wasn't as bad as the Buccanears recent change, but it's in the ballpark.

Carolina Hurricanes 2013... massive downgrade

For sure!

But to my surprise, I heard comments from several Canes fans on another board about how they like those clean and fresh new jerseys, and that the warning stripes don't look all that great.

NFL:

-Bucs obviously. IMO, Creamsicle to Pewter was a downgrade, just because I loved the Creamsicles, but the Pewter unis were still nice. What they wear now is reprehensible.

-Jags from the Taylor/Brunell jerseys to the 08 set. The new set is better than the 08-12 but that helmet is just atrocious.

-Vikings in 06. When those unis first debuted I liked them (Even though I still thought what they replaced didn't need replacing), but they didn't stand the test of time. Thank God the Nike-fied version only lasted one year. I love what they wear now besides the black facemask and the numbers. Either put the serifs on both numbers or none, not just one.

NHL:

-Mighty Ducks to Ducks

-Almost everyone who changed their jerseys with edge in 07-08. Most notably COL, DAL and CGY.

-Hurricanes. Removal of the warning stripes was stupid. It was unique, fit the team name and didn't look bad. The current white unis are nice in a vaccum but the home ones are Blandy McBlanderson. Where Tampa used the Wings template with Leafs colors, they used the Leafs (or Team Canada) template with Wings colors.

MLB:

-DBacks Teal and Purple to Brick and Tan

-Marlins from Florida to the current Miami mess.

-Padres from 90s-2003 set to navy and sand.

NBA:

-No egregious downgrades immediately come to mind.
