Isn't it effectively what Chivas USA is being rebranded into?

No.

Chivas USA has folded. The players are being dispersed, the academy will be shuttered, all contracts are being cancelled. This is a brand new team with no connection to Chivas USA at all, other than they're playing in the same city.

Because expansion fees > team's market value.

No, because Chivas USA was so toxic they want no connection at all between the clubs. They needed a clean break, so they made one.

Nah, It'll stay Los Angeles FC. As far as picking an identity, they said this on their twitter account: "This is your team. You decide its future. Logo, team name, kits - we want to hear from you. #LAFC2017" So we'll see if they stick to that or nor, but yeah, two years to do all of that.

And honestly, they have those two years to hook me. I say I'm a Galaxy fan simply because they're in LA and have Donovan, Keane (which I love as someone of Irish roots), they had the big attention grab with Beckham, and also because they've been winners. But I'd never say I was "ride or die" with the Galaxy. However, simply just seeing this stuff this morning, I think it'd be fun to get in on the ground floor with a team and truly become a fan and make LAFC my MLS team. We'll see how the next two years go, but I'm intrigued.

There are casual fans like you, and I imagine they'll also be doing what NYCFC is doing; grabbing people who are new to the league or who haven't already followed the Galaxy for whatever reason.

I will say it is extremely cool to get in on the ground floor and have a say in the development of the club's culture.

Bleh. I like NYCFC because NYRB is more NJ than NY, making NYCFC the New York team, but the Galaxy were already the LA team so LAFC doesn't fit in that good, imo. Wish they would have gone the Aztecs route. Hell, I know it is moot point now, but I like the name Chivas USA better than Los Angeles FC. Been pretty happy with the changes in MLS recently but this is a big whiff

It's a large Metro area. It can support two clubs. I suppose by your rationale, the Jets should have never been brought into the league because the Giants already existed. Mets should have never been awarded because there were already the Yankees.

Chivas USA is quite possible the worst name in MLS' existence. And that's saying something...cause there have been some doozies.

The thing I have to wonder about this is what exactly is different about LAFC and the Galaxy.

The Galaxy for the longest time have always been the big money team of MLS (though NYCFC & LAFC might challenge for that title) and I have seen some fans in LA say that they couldn't get behind such a concept and LAFC to me is just another big money team.

The only difference I can see so far is the color schemes.

No. Chivas was officially folded on Monday and has been disbanded. Their players are going into the dispersal draft and their academy is being shut down. LAFC is a totally new expansion franchise that begins play in 2017. Looks like they're going to be playing at the LA Coliseum to start and are going to be focusing on building a new stadium at the LA Sports Arena site.

Which will be one of the differentiation points between LAFC and the Galaxy. LAFC actually will play IN LA. They'll be in the prime location, not out in the burbs in Carson like the Galaxy. It's not unlike the situation between NYCFC and the Red Bulls if not as extreme.

It's been like two hours.

Literally the only things they've done are announce their existence and a color scheme.

Even then it's not hard to see that people will find reasons to root for them. I mean why does anyone go to Clippers games all these years? Becuase they're not the Lakers. I suspect many Chivas USA fans had the same reasons for rooting for Chivas (at least before Vergara decided all non-Spanish speakers weren't worth acknowledging and drove them all away), ie: they weren't the Galaxy. The same logic will undoubtedly drive people to LAFC too.

That's why I might want to make NYCFC my MLS team. I tried to get behind the Revolution, being a Boston team, but that didn't really stick. And this year, I tried to get behind my local team, Toronto FC, with the signings of Defoe and Bradley, but I just can't watch that garbage team. I'd like to get into MLS, and NYCFC would be a fresh start. My uncle also lives in New York, so I at least have a small connection to them.
