Does anyone, ANYONE on earth honestly have any aesthetical justification for the snot trails, jagged collars and toilet bowl neck striping Nike has plagued the NFL with? No more diverse collar stripes, it's rather toilet bowl of Boyz in the Hood for you! I mean am I the only one who cannot see that as anything other than an absolute bad, nothing possibly redeeming to it design wise? What a disgrace the Eagles decided not wear green so they could butcher their look.

First off, I agree with you in hating all these Nike design elements. I especially like your term "snot trail." But did you realize there was a point behind the Eagles wearing black so much this season? Their greens weren't shipped to them until several games into the season.

I suspect this thread began on the heels of a rant, so that's all I've got for now.

It looks like everyone is wearing neck rolls. It's really bad.

The collars are so thick that even the teams that ditched the neck roll look still don't look great unless they matched the collar color to the jersey color.

I'm glad teams like GB, CAR, BUF, ATL etc aren't using the Flywire collar at all.

Nike seems to roll out new templates for college jerseys every couple years. Wondering if they'll have a new non-flywire template for NFL teams next year.

Ultimately it's on the team to enforce what kind of collar they are fine with. Carolina, Green Bay and Oakland all kept there old collars, with Carolina using the 51 Elite template while Green Bay and Oakland kept the entire template they previously used. It does look bad when St. Louis wears throwback jerseys with the toilet bowl collars. They should've just followed Carolina's examle.

l color collar. Being a texans fan, the old collars look really bacon necky in contrast and would often get lost.

As for the half collars, I'm disappointed Nike would even let that be an option. They've only looked passable on the bengals.

Carolina did not upgrade to the 51 Elite template. They still use the old template and old collar along with the Raiders and Packers.

I just wish more teams besides the Panthers, Packers and Raiders stuck with their existing template. I can deal with most of the collars, but I absolutely hate the Saints, Rams, Broncos and Texans.

The collars aren't supposed to be aesthetically pleasing, nor are they really performance-enhancing, which is Nike's public explanation for them. It's branding. Just like the Adidas Shockweb, it's a significant jersey element that immediately identifies the brand of the jersey, without needing logos. You see the Flywire and say "that's a Nike jersey." And whether the response is positive or negative, it's a response, which is what Nike/Adidas want.

the size of the collar started with the FlyWire insertion on the Pro Combat template. the FlyWire was a really great idea to prevent the jersey from getting pulled over the side of the pads during a game. the size of the collar was just what it needed to be.

moving onto the Speed Machine/Elite51 for whatever reason (weather it was a production issue or conscious Nike branding decision) they were not making the flywire piece the same color as the jersey body. eventually of course, they started to make the whole collar the same color, without the flywire though. i have to double check this, but i cant recall off the top of my head if any of the full bleed collars have FlyWire in them. for example, the Texans have the Elite51 template, with a full bleed, alternate color collar, but no FlyWire is used.

as Nike moves on to other templates and finds ways to work with what they already have to suit team preferences/needs, thats what they're going to do. they wont go back to an old template just to make a collar smaller. they're always working on the next thing. the result of the size and design of the collars is just a unintended consequence. it needed to be what it was, and how teams choose to work with it is up to them. the Texans don't have to have a red collar, but thats what they're doing.

Well the thing is Nike is designing these with performance and not aesthetics in mind. So no, There is no aesthetical reason for them because they are made to be strong, not pretty.

The Broncos jerseys have a full collar that is a different color than the jersey and has Flywire.

Nike is designing them with 1/2 performance, 1/2 branding in mind. I have absolutely no doubt that they'll favor the performance developments that also happen to carry a distinctive look. Because the fact that we can even have a thread called "Nike collars", and everybody instantly knows what those are, means they're winning.

I understand that there is a method behind the madness of the Flywire Collar but I don't like it at all. I find they always look terrible. Unfortunately, I think a lot of their designs have been big loads of Plasticrap in the past few years. I see the College Football highlights and the collars and templates are eye sores to me. Ever since Nike took over designing the NFL's uniforms, I have personally found that the NFL's uniforms have gone downhill. Even teams like the 49ers and the Colts. Their jerseys are fantastic but those collars ruin them. It's like somebody cut pieces of Ziploc bags and glued them on the collars thinking they would look awesome. They murdered the Bucs and the Seahawks. I know it's the teams that sign these looks off but the designs from Nike have been horrible. I hated the Sochi Hockey Jerseys and i personally find that the quality of the jerseys feel very cheap. I have even found that with their authentic jerseys too. I have a football jersey from Reebok and the numbers and letters are nicely stitched on and not screen-printed. I also think their "innovations" a lot of times are codeword(s) for reducing production costs so that they can make even more money. As you can clearly see, I don't care for Nike at all and their collars make me dislike them even more. I think they could do far better than they have. If you disagree, you disagree. If you like what they have been producing as of late, then all the power to you.
