Am I the only one wondering how many butts the Division II NCG can but in the seats of Sporting Park (or whatever the MLS stadium in KC is called)? Honestly seems like too big of a venue for D2.

Sort of. You see, if it was Pittsburg State or Northwest Missouri State in the title game, it would be easily filled with fans of the Gorillas or Bearcats.

CSU-Pueblo and MSU-Mankato could fill the seats because both schools aren't that far away from Kansas City. Concord and West Georgia might be somewhat troublesome .

I was thinking about more of an issue of venue capacity. To me a nice size for a D2 championship would be a stadium that seats 10-12K. Sporting Park is damn near 20K.

There is more to f'n do in Kansas City, especially since the stadium is two miles from a casino.

Didn't know until a couple of minutes ago that Sporting Park is in the state of Kansas. Thought it was in Missouri.

There you go... Now, for my preview of 'Lower Level Championship Weekend'

NAIA - Daytona Beach, Florida

Southern Oregon Raiders vs. Marian (IN) Knights

An unlikely match-up for the NAIA's first ever trip to Daytona Beach, the Marian Knights are the 2012 champs and have used a strong defense in route to their second title game trip in three years. In order to win that title, the stout defense will need to clamp down on SOU's gunslinger Austin Dodge. The local product is rewriting the record books at the NAIA level and for a program that has never farther then the quarterfinals, this is a big moment for them. Which side will win out, the gun slinging Raiders or the defensive minded Knights?

Division III - Salem, Virginia

Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks vs. Mount Union Purple Raiders

For the 9th time since 2005, these two purple schools meet once again for the Division III title. The Warhawks have won 5 out of the 8 meetings with the Purple Raiders and would love to give their outgoing coach, Lance Leipold, a parting gift of yet another national championship, the program's 6th title in 8 years, before heading to Buffalo. Mount Union has revenge on their minds after last year's 52-14 beatdown in the championship game.

Division II - Kansas City, Kansas

Colorado State-Pueblo ThunderWolves vs. Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks

A new champion will be crowned as for the first time since 1986, the Division II title game is not in Florence, Alabama. The Mavericks of the Northern Sun Conference ride a balanced offense that lead them to two very impressive wins over rival Minnesota-Duluth and Concord (WV). Pueblo, on the other hand, brings a strong defense to this game, as shown in their 10-7 slugfest victory over West Georgia in the semis.

The field at Sporting Park is holding up pretty well. Last year in the FCS Championship (also at an MLS stadium) the field was horrible. Clumps of grass & dirt were coming up with pretty much every step the players took. Sporting Park looks good hosting football on tv.

However I still believe it's too big of a venue of D2. There are a lot of empty seats. Not sure it would look different even if a team from Missouri or Kansas was playing.

CSU Pueblo seems to be in full control going into the 4th qtr.

Last year the NCAA laid sod over top the field some 3-4 weeks before the game. Then Dallas had a nasty freeze the next week. The field never took root and it was torn up pretty easily as a result. With better weather this year there shouldn't be the same issues.

  • 2 weeks later...

Give Illinois State credit, they had a hell of a season. I love both teams, so I didn't want to see either one lose. But great job by NDSU. They didn't miss a beat after Bohl left. Next year will be interesting to see if maybe they're just doing well off of Bohl's players. I would have liked to see them in the MWC or some FBS conference these last few years.
