Ostensibly this new international tournament is meant to replace friendlies, but in light of the multiple fiascos surrounding the next two World Cups, I wonder if this isn't also a trial balloon for an overhauled World Cup format that isn't hosted by any one nation, a la Euro 2020.

UEFA's first new 'Nations League' -- the competition which is being brought in to replace a number of friendly dates -- will be played between September and November 2018, UEFA said on Thursday.

So the way they might reformat the WC would truly make it a "World" Cup? I think that's a pretty neat idea. It would open up doors to all cities and bring in revenue for more than just one country.

Well, FIFA hasn't yet discussed making the WC a multinational event, but given UEFA's influence within FIFA, the former's displeasure with the latter over the 2018 and 2022 WC bidding, and the expected difficulty going forward in finding non-corrupt democratic nations willing to host sporting mega-events like the WC and the Olympics, if the Nations League and Euro 2020 go over well, I could easily see FIFA going this route with the WC too.

I actually like the idea of the Nations League as it would get rid of those pointless international friendlies. Maybe a structured national competition and being a precursor to EURL 2020 would do many mid to small European football nnations some good in developing thwit game and talent.
