NFL Uniform Rankings

Recommended Posts

With the NFL post season approaching I decided to rank every current NFL uniform and put them through a post-season match up. Before we get started keep in mind that I am a huge fan of classics and in my opinion simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. I also look for correlation and consistency (stripes on helmet match stripes on rest of the uniform) and when there is more than meets the eye. Meaning behind a design. Lets begin.

AFC East:

1-NYJ

2-MIA

3-BUF

4-NE

This division is packed full of great uniform design with the exception of NE.

I love white helmets and 3 of the 4 teams wear them.

MIA has great colors. When I think of those colors I think of Miami. I wasn't a fan of them at first because I didn't think there was anything wrong with their old uniforms, but I've warmed up to them. Their logo on the other had is terrible. I think MIA teams are looking for that hotel look.

BUF's switch back to a classic look with white helmets was a good choice.

Their stripe consitentcy can be a little funky, but it's better than what they used to have.

What I don't like about NE uniform design is how busy and inconsistent they are.

I feel they should trash the silver and switch back to white. Last time I checked

our great nations colors are red, WHITE, and blue.

AFC North

1-CLE

2-BAL

3-CIN

4-PIT

This division was a little lackluster. CLE ran away with this division.

I don't love and I don't hate BAL. A few things I'd like to see them do is mix up the colors a bit.

This is one of the teams I'd like to redesign. Ravens are completely black and I'd like to see BAL

switch to black as their primary color along with a gun metal or flat black with a few hints of red and yellow

to stay consistent with Maryland's colors.I'm loving the new matte helmets that have become popular in recent years

and I think BAL would look sharp with matte black helmets with a shiny black decal.

A love when teams use something other than their logo that goes along with their mascot on their helmets (CIN, STL, PHI, MIN) That's about all I like about CIN. Uniforms are a little too busy for my liking.

I love PIT's colors and they look good on the field but I don't like the different thicknesses and amount of stripes they use. If there was a little more consistency the top of the division would have been a harder choice.

AFC West

1-OAK

2-SD

3-KC

4-DEN

Another pretty good division. I can't stand the Raider brand and organization, but when it comes to uniforms that's one thing they've got going on. Classic, simple, and iconic.

The battle for 2 in this division was tough. If I could I'd have SD and KC tied and DEN take the 4 hole.

SD baby blues are hard to dislike. No complaints with this design. If they ever look for a bit of a change I'd like to see

them add maybe an electric yellow much like Oregon Univ. but only used in moderation.

KC's are solid. I can't think of anything I'd change.

DEN to me is meh. When they first debuted their new look I was all about it, but they're due for a change.

AFC South

1-IND

2-HOU

3-TEN

4-JAC

Another pretty decent division. The top spot was hard to decide. What ultimately won IND the top spot was the LSU style stripes on the shoulder. It's a different look and not used as much these days.

HOU has one of the best modern designs today.

TEN is much like DEN in my opinion. Loved them when they first entered, but it's time for a change.

JAC used to have the best helmets until they switched to their terrible excuse for a gradient. Another team I'd like to redesign. I love the unique color scheme and this is another team I'd mess around with the matte look.

NFC South

1-NO

2-CAR

3-ATL

4-TB

This is one of the weakest divisions in the league. It was an easy decision for the top spot.

I love gold and NO has solid uniforms. Nothing I would change except their play on the field as of late.

CAR could turn it up a notch. I like that they're using their iconic Carolina blue a lot more, but I'd switch to a black helmet and enlarge the logo and have only the CAR blue highlights with no keyline.

ATL's are too busy for my liking. Another modern design that is trying too hard to be different.

TB used to have awesome uniforms, but they are now one of the worst in the NFL with their recent change to an alarm clock inspired design.

NFC North

1-GB

2-MIN

3-DET

4-CHI

This is by far the best division as far looks go. A lot of great classic designs with a well executed modern design thrown in.

GB wins the top spot for me. Nothing to complain about here except for when they wear their God-awful throwbacks with the yellow circle that encases the number. Please throw those way back into the never wear again pile.

MIN has one of the best modern designs. I love the matte helmet. I love gold so much that I would love to see MIN switch from there yellow to a gold. I think it would but something that would give them a little kick. The only thing I'm not loving in this design is how the white strip on the shoulder inclines upwards towards the back of the uniform. I'd like to know if there is meaning behind it or if the designer was just trying to be different.

DET's are a great execution of modern meets classic. I love the update. Only thing I'd consider changing is the stripe thicknesses on the helmet.

CHI is just another one of those classics. I like when they omit white from their uniforms the most. This is another team that could be turned up slightly, but I wouldn't want it to destroy their classic look. It would need to be execute the same way DET's are in my opinion.

NFC East

1-WAS

2-PHI

3-NYG

4-DAL

This division is so-so. Not bad, but not great. WAS wins the number one spot. I like that they've switched back to the yellow pants although I tend to like it when teams helmets and pants are the same color. They are the exception.

PHI are okay. Much like BAL. They could use something new. Maybe a switch back to Kelly Green.

NYG is another one that's meh. I think they could use a minor change.

Where do I begin with DAL? I don't understand how one of the biggest brands in the world could have such terrible uniforms. DAL can't decide what colors they want to use. Navy blue on the helmet, Royal on their jerseys, and the silver pants don't match the silver helmets. Their dark uniforms that they hardly wear aren't bad, but "C'mon Man"!

NFC West

1-SF

2-STL

3-SEA

4-ARZ

This division scores a B+ in my opinion. SF wins just because I love gold. As you guys can tell, I love the gold. Maybe cause I'm a golden domer fan, but who knows. I like what I like. There switch back to the classic look was a success. The only thing I don't like about them is the black ring around the logo. Black isn't used anywhere else in their uniforms.

STL has the coolest helmets in the league. I'm not a fan of their strip scheme on their dark pants though. I would love for them to go back to royal and yellow though. This is one of those rare occasions where I'm over the gold only because I love the royal and yellow look so much.

I hated SEA at first, but then I did a little research. Turns out they put a lot of thought into their design. I love that they integrated the north west art style in a modern way and added something for the infamous 12th man. Although it's not Emerald green I think it's cool that the city of SEA is taking on this green that the Seahawks and Sounders use much like all the pro teams in PIT are black and yellow. I think it unites the city and makes it seem like they are all one.

ARZ's are much like ATL. Too busy and I don't understand some of the choices. Maybe it's random decisions, maybe not. Love the white helmets though.

Okay, time for the playoffs!

Here's my rankings in a 1-32 format: Before you read you should know I'm a sucker for white helmets and light/powder blue.

1. Bills

-My favorite uniforms in the league. Love how the red pops off the Royal Blue

2. Colts

-UCLA stripes plus have that Red Wings/Maple Leafs one color thing working for them. Perfection.

3. Chiefs

-Never change.

4. Panthers

-UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT! Love the Panthers color scheme. Blue ALTS are one of my favorite jerseys. Even look great in mono-black

5. Bears

-Classic

6. Packers

-See Bears

7. Raiders

-Some might say boring, but still classic. Away uniforms are amazing.

8. Chargers

-They're this high solely because of the Powder Blue Alts and a white helmet. Wish they'd make powder the primary.

9. Vikings

-Make the Numbers consistent and make the facemask gray or purple and they're a few spots higher. Miss the UCLA stripe white jerseys though.

10. Steelers

-Almost left them out of the top 10 somehow.

11. Browns

-Beautiful. Lose points for wearing stripe-less brown pants (and mono brown). They'll be in the 20s next year, guaranteed.

12. 49ers

-Fix your stripes FFS.

13. Cowboys

-I hate the inconsistent colors on their whites, but it still works somehow. Rarely used Blue jerseys are one of my favorites in the league.

14. Jets

-Good look. The mismatched greens bother me but that's Nike's fault.

15. Giants

-Most would have them higher, but I hate the lack of blue on the away jersey. New white pants look great.

16. Titans

-Used to be pushing top 10 until I heard about light blue jerseys and pants going away completely. Cmon TEN, you couldn't even keep them as an ALT option?

17. Dolphins

-Very meh. I love the new Aqua, but it doesn't make up for lack of orange and stupid logo.

18. Redskins

-Yellow pants are hideous. Bring back burgundy for the road, at least.

19. Texans

-So many people love the Texans unis but they're just meh to me.

20. Lions

-Love the Honolulu Blue, but I hate the font. Prefer the pre-09 jerseys. And nothing beats the Sanders era.

21. Ravens

-21 sounds low and it probably is, but they're not this low cause I don't like them, except for the yoga pants look, just prefer the other teams more.

22. 16. Rams

-One of the best helmets in the league. Would be higher if they still had gold pants, wore mono-blue less and dropped the neck roll collar.

23. Broncos

-I loved them when they first debuted, but haven't stood the test of time. Still don't hate them though.

24. Eagles

-Great helmets. Not a fan of the midnight green, although it looks better now with Nike. One of the few who likes the black alts (better with white pants though).

25. Seahawks

-Hated them when they first came out but have grown on me. Still hate the stupid chest stripe things and the fact they default with mono-blue when blue over gray looks so good.

26. Patriots

-Piping needs to go.

27. Falcons

-Time for a change.

28. Saints

-Burn the black pants. And why do you still have neck roll collars? That's why they're this low.

29. Bengals

-Beautiful helmets ruined by side panels and neck roll collars and everything else.

30. Cardinals

-Just ugly, save for the black ALTs, which I actually like. Mono-red looks horrible.

31. Jaguars

-Would be a little higher if it wasn't for the worst helmet ever. They can thank the Bucs for not being last. Still can't believe teal is now a secondary or tertiary color.

32. Bucs

-This topic has been beaten to death. Alarm clock #s, big helmet logo, stupid pants stripe, pewter looks gray/brown, etc.

Don't adjust them, they look great:

Buffalo

Houston

Tennessee

Pittsburgh

Cleveland

Oakland

Kansas City

Denver

Philadelphia

NY Giants

Carolina

Atlanta

Chicago

Green Bay

Minnesota

Detroit

A minor tweak is all they need

Miami: Just widen the orange trim and striping and they are golden and bring back the non-Aquafresh logo.

NY Jets: While I prefer the 1980's Kelly green look, the currents would be more than acceptable if the fabrics matched accurately.

Cincinnati: Tone it back about 3 notches. Reduce the striping on the sleeves, cut out the jersey side stripes and you are ok.

Indianapolis: Figure out a way for the shoulder stripes to wrap around the armpit and you are classic.

Dallas: Get rid of the green-silver pants and match the silvers and blues.

Washington: Return to the white pants with yellow-burgundy thick stripes and the burgundy pants with yellow-white think stripes.

New Orleans: Bring back the State logo on the sleeves and always use the gold pants with the thick black stripe, never the stripeless black.

St. Louis: Bring back gold pants. I will even allow stripeless pants in this one case.

San Francisco: Fix the arm sleeves so that it is 3 solid white stripes.

Arizona: White facemask and never wear the black alternates or red on red.

This look is a disaster. Start over or go back to a past look

New England: Keep the navy-red-silver combo, but adjust the striping so there is no piping down the jersey and return to the silver

pants from the first year of the new logo, the one's with the red stripe that morphed into a blue stripe to match the

logo's shift from the blue tricorner hat to the red flag stripes. Best pant stripes ever.

Baltimore: Return to the original uniform with the black pants that had a single thick white stripe. No stripeless leotard look.

Jacksonville: Return to the original uniforms from 1995.

San Diego: Remove the color swatches from shoulders and pants so that the bolts stand alone against the main jersey/pant color and

move to powder blue as the primary, or return completely to Navy & Yellow of early 2000's with an accurate 1960's throwback

Tampa Bay: Ditch the entire NIKE remake and go back to your late 2000's uniform in its entirety.

Seattle: Ditch the entire NIKE look and return to the 2 blues from the 2000's but without the unitard. Blue jersey with white pants and vice versa

Nike's press release explanation for both the stripes and the numbers was something about representing the bows of a Vikings ship.

Seattle: Ditch the entire NIKE look and return to the 2 blues from the 2000's but without the unitard. Blue jersey with white pants and vice versa

No,no,no, NEVER do that. The glory days were the 80's and 90's, NOT the 2000's. This look they have now is WORLDS better than that disaster of the the double blues.

AFC East

1. Buffalo: Great color balance, would be absolute perfection with a non grey facemask and no navy.

2. Miami: More orange and they give Buffalo a run for their money at the top.

3. New York Jets: Close call between them and the Dolphins, but the different shades of green ruin it.

4. New England: Trying to do too much on this one, simplify and ditch the grey for white.

AFC North

1. Cleveland: One of the best in the NFL so long as they don't wear those awful brown pants. It will be interesting to see how the rebrand effects their ranking.

2. Pittsburgh: Too many striping inconsistencies and a subpar road look keep this behind Pittsburgh

3. Baltimore: Wish the black pants had stripes, and were used less than the white pants

4. Cincinnati: Way too much going on, the side panels are awful.

AFC South

1. Indianapolis: I actually like the grey facemask on this one

2. Houston: The red alternates are great, I wish they'd bring them back

3. Tennessee: If they actually used the light blue, I'd take them over Houston

4. Jacksonville: The helmet is awful, and have they ever worn their tea uniforms?

AFC West

1. Kansas City: If they only used white pants, they would have the best look in the league

2. Oakland: Classic, but just a little too simple for me.

3. San Diego: Powder blues should be the primaries

4. Denver: Orange as the primary is good, but I'm not a fan of the side paneling

NFC East

1. Washington: Hate the yellow pants on the road, but the Redskins dominates a weak division.

2. New York Giants: Home look is spectacular, even just a little blue on the road would have won them the division

3. Philadelphia: Besides the black alternate, this is their best look ever, IMO.

4. Dallas: The colors not matching drags them from first all the way down to last.

NFC North

1. Chicago: A homer pick, sure, but I think the color balance may be the best in the league

2. Minnesota: The rebrand was great, and I love the new number font

3. Green Bay: Homes are phenomenal, but similar to Pittsburgh, yellow pants with a white jersey just doesn't work for me.

4. Detroit: If they would just get rid of the black, this division would be impossible to rank

NFC South

1. New Orleans: Wins by default, this division is terrible, if they never wore the black pants again, this look would be perfect.

2. Carolina: Dump the silver and make the Carolina blues the primary and they win this division

3. Atlanta: Red helmet and a simpler design, and they would challenge for the top

4. Tampa Bay: Kill it with fire, go back to the last look

NFC West

1. San Francisco: Fix the sleeve stripes and get rid of the grey facemask

2. Seattle: The better of the mono-blue looks, just stop with the monochrome and this look would be in the top half of the league

3. St. Louis: Gold Pants, that's all they would need to win this division

4. Arizona: Weird inserts and piping with a classic helmet, no thanks

AFC Playoffs

1. Kansas City

2. Buffalo

3. Indianapolis

4.Cleveland

5. Oakland

6. Miami

Wildcard Round

Indianapolis over Miami: More orange would have put Miami over the top

Oakland over Cleveland: Those brown pants make it an easy victory for the Raiders

Divisional Round

Kansas City over Oakland: Two classic uniforms, Kansas City's superior color scheme gets them through to the championship game

Buffalo over Indianapolis: Another classic uniform matchup, and again, the Bill's superior color scheme gives them the victory

Championship

Kansas City over Buffalo: Buffalo's navy blue and grey facemask prevent them from getting to the Super Bowl

NFC Playoffs

1. Chicago

2. Washington

3. San Francisco

4. New Orleans

5. Minnesota

6. Green Bay

Wildcard Round

Green Bay over San Francisco: If the Niners would fix their sleeve stripes, this matchup might be close

Minnesota over New Orleans: The Saints took advantage of a week division, now they get blown out of the water once they face real competition

Divisional Round

Chicago over Green Bay: Homes are dead even, but Da Bear's roads give them the edge

Minnesota over Washington: The North shows its dominance as the Vikings advance

Championship

Chicago over Minnesota: Closest match up so far, better color balance helps send the Bears to the Super Bowl

SUPER BOWL

Chicago over Kansas City: Those awful mono reds are the deciding factor in an otherwise even matchup

AFC E

1. Miami - Tannehill era dresses great esp the whites, logo reminds me of Any Given Sunday movie

2. *New England - looks like a modern football uni & blue is easy on the eyes

3. New York - not a green fan

4. Buffalo - need to stop trying so hard to be cool, it's not working

AFC N

1. Pittsburgh - best helmet, best numbering + lettering, nice whites, solid darks

2. Baltimore - uni suits their franchise m.o. to a tee

3. Cleveland - sure it looks classic, alas there's so much modern losing to go with it

4. Cincinnati - bru-tal, they look like cartoon characters running around

AFC S

1. Houston - I like their scheme, logo is cool; less is more works great

2. Indianapolis - classic scheme, never been a fan of the thin horseshoe

3. Jacksonville - helmet sucks, the rest is fine; a great history to work from should refresh again

4. Tennessee - my least fav AFC; their light blue isn't special, logo is CFL calibre, & they never inspire passion - bring back the Oilers scheme!

AFC W

1. Oakland - As close to perfection as can be. Steelers' secondary yellow is more intimidating than Raider silver & white.

2. *San Diego - very refreshing, easy on the eyes, great palette

3. Kansas City - red isn't huge for me

4. Denver - worst AFC logo imo, just looks so busy. Had they not won SBs in these, they'd look like expansion unis. Bring back the D.

NFC E

1. Dallas - weakest division titleist, at least it's a nice simple inoffensive scheme

2. New York - switch greys back to whites & it's top 10

3. Philadelphia - awesome logo, proper colour scheme, just a bit too hockey'ish or something

4. Washington - not a huge fan of red, not a huge fan of their rusty yellows, & I don't like their logo

NFC N

1. Chicago - logo doesn't inspire much, the rest is football perfection

2. *Green Bay - not a huge green fan, yet the yellow eases me

3. Minnesota - nice updates, not a huge fan of the logo

4. Detroit - best 4th place finisher

NFC S

1. Carolina - very nice whites, solid logo, good colour schemes, & electric blues ready when needed

2. Atlanta - not bad, not great, pretty nice all things considered... the Bengals should take notes

3. New Orleans - I'm just getting bored of them

4. Tampa Bay - lols ...97 pewters were one of the greatest rebrands in sports history, now they're in the garbage

NFC W

1. San Francisco - best helmet, classy logo, nice homes, solid whites, good lettering/numbering, best balance in the NFL

2. *Seattle - huge points for going all in, love the small nuances of the jersey... pops their logo

3. Arizona - fav reds yet still red... nice inoffensive scheme & I like the latest logo

4. St. Louis - I'm bored of these also... maybe they'll look better outside in the Los Angeles sunshine

AFC title: Pittsburgh def Oakland - Raider logo, black & silver is eked out by awesome Steeler font, helmet, balance, & intimidation factor.

NFC title: San Francisco def Carolina - I'm not a huge NFC North guy

SB: San Fran def Pittsburgh by 6pts. Gold helmets ice the victory.

I don't see how people liked the double blue look. Ever. At no point in its existence did it look better than a 4. The only tolerable look was this

Actually, in my opinion that was one of the worst looks, because of the pants and socks being the same color which universally sucks, period. The only time this uniform remotely worked was when they wore the depression-blue over white pants.
