NBA union launches contest for new logo

The National Basketball Players Association is turning to a contest to get a new logo.

It's disappointing that an organization whose primary mission is to fight for commensurate compensation for the work of talented professionals would settle on this as the best process to rebrand, but I'm sure they'll have no shortage of well-executed logos to choose from.

Do they even need a logo? I can't recall ever seeing the logo for any of the PAs. I'm sure they have them; they're just not important.

Absolutely not. It's pure manipulation. Now, the NBPA gets to solicit hundreds, maybe thousands of designs and in the end only one person gets paid for their work (and even that may be paid in a prize package). That's complete horse :censored:. If they want to solicit multiple people to design logos, that's fine, but they need to do so by paying each and every one for their work. Like someone above said, it's laughable for a players union to operate this way.

Then there's the issue of intellectual property theft, which more often than not, is how these contests end. When you solicit a bunch of amateurs, you're going to get a good deal of stolen work.

The only way to get a quality concept is for the designer and client to develop a deep understanding of the needs and goal of a project. When you whore it out like this, almost everything you get is going to be superficial...lipstick on a pig.

And more, looking into their official rules is this troubling piece (as it's usually included in most contests like these):

"All entries, including Submissions, become the sole and exclusive property of the Sponsor. Sponsor shall have the right to edit, adapt and publish or not publish any or all of the Submissions, and may use them in any media without attribution or compensation to the entrant, his/her successors or assigns, or any other entity."

It even goes on to say that they are allowed to use any element or style from your design in whatever they please, without being required to compensate you.

Meaning, to everyone thinking about submitting, the second you submit something, the NBPA owns it. Forever. Thus, if you design something and the NBPA doesn't select it as the "winner," they can still make it their logo. It also means they can make their own design similar to yours and use it for free. Or say, you want to use your non-winning design on something else in the future, you legally couldn't do that.

So the NBPA will legally own thousands of designs, and not technically have to pay a dime for it. That's what is so ridiculous about these kinds of things.

If the NBPA thinks this is a fair way to treat talent, I'm looking forward to the next CBA negotiations where they agree that only the best player on the team gets paid, and he is paid far, far below his value, and the likenesses of the players who didn't get paid this meager sum can be featured on billboards and t-shirts in perpetuity without compensation.

You don't play sports video games very much then.

Not since the early days of the Nintendo 64 era. I do remember seeing that NFLPA logo on a black background from like a Sega Genesis game? The other ones are so generic, I forgot what they looked like in the time it took to scroll down this page.
