I, of course, was at the Swarm season opener (being a STH and all). They played well through the first three quarters and led 10-9, only to fall apart in epic fashion, yielding 11 goals in Q4 alone and losing 20-13 to Colorado.

Despite this, there were some encouraging signs that the Swarm won't be nearly as bad as their 4-14 squad a year ago. That roster scored on just 19% of their shots on goal - dead last in the NLL. In the opener they went 13 for 48, or 27%, a massive improvement to start the season.

The game also marked the pro debut of Miles Thompson, the eldest of the Thompson clan that tore up the college ranks in 2014. Like a certain rookie NFL quarterback, Miles is a former college phenom who wears #2. Unlike said NFL QB, Miles certainly isn't playing like a #2. He picked up a hat trick and an assist in his first regular-season game with the Swarm.

Glad to see another Native-owned team in the league. However, sucks Philly is gone after a long stride. Maybe one day this league will get it's respect.

Agreed and agreed.

Philly invested in a mostly American team including guys like Paul Rabil and Johnny Christmas over the years.

From a native standpoint (Seminole Nation of Okla.), native ownership and representation plays a big part in how to the sport can grow and still embrace the native stickball roots. This is why I believe a New England vs. Buffalo rivalry should be an anticipated event for the NLL.

(Off Topic but: I'm currently in the middle of doing a NLL concept series. Also, I'm unveiling a special NA language themed logo series soon.) ?

Honestly dont see it happening, until/if the Knighthawks move from Rochester, and even then.

And on that note, almost forgot that the Boston Blazers existed

Tonight it was the Swarm's turn to stage an epic second-half rally. Down 9-3 late in the third quarter in Edmonton, they switched goalies (Zack Higgins for Brodie MacDonald) and then exploded for eleven goals in the last 20 minutes to knock off the Rush 14-10.

Miles Thomson got another hat trick, as did Callum Crawford. Even Andrew Suitor (not a highly prolific scorer) got a couple, including the second full-length-of-the-rink empty-netter of his career.

As for Edmonton, they stumble to an 0-2 start, already as many losses as they had all of last season. Without their usual coach and GM Derek Keenan (who's taken a leave of absence from the team to care for his ailing wife), the Rush suddenly find themselves in a world of hurt.

Update: It turns out Keenan's wife passed away before last night's game - there was a moment of silence during the pregame. No word yet on when Keenan plans to return to the Rush.

Good to have a team back up that way i would have thought.

Open play, free flowing, and don't mind taking a few risks......... all good things you want to attract good crowds.

Minnesota wound up beating New England 19-13. The Swarm offense seem to be improving every week. Last season they only shot around 19%, dead-last in the NLL. So far this year they're just above 30%, a massive improvement.

Here are my NLL power rankings through the season so far. They are based on a ratings system I've developed that mainly rewards wins on the road and/or against higher-rated teams.

  • Colorado: Are the unbeaten Mammoth finally back as a serious Cup contender? They're certainly playing like one.
  • Toronto: The Rock have also been fast out of the gate, though they hit a speed bump Saturday night in Rochester.
  • Minnesota: Two big road wins following a 4th-quarter collapse at home in the season opener.
  • Buffalo: Both wins were against struggling Western teams, both losses against Eastern rivals - not a good sign.
  • Edmonton: After a rocky start, the Rush seem to have righted their ship with a blowout win in Calgary.
  • Rochester: Despite a stellar offensive unit, the 3-time defending champs average just 9 goals scored per game.
  • New England: Off to a 2-1 start, but all three games played so far at home - the jury's still out on the Black Wolves.
  • Vancouver: The defense has failed the Stealth big-time thus far, giving up an average of 17 goals per game.
  • Calgary: The NLL's most disappointing team so far, last year's runners-up haven't tasted victory in three tries in 2015.
