2015 MLB Season Thread with Postseason Discussion

I think if a catcher has the ball and is blocking the plate, the runner can still run into the catcher but can't elbow him or shoulder him or do anything aggressive like that to jar the ball loose. I think. And the runner can't go out of his way to make contact with the catcher.

As I understand it, the runner can't go out of his way to create contact and the catcher can't block the plate if he doesn't have the ball.

There still will be the (mostly) unavoidable natural collisions but the runner can't initiate the contact by dropping his shoulder or "throwin' some 'bows" anymore.

The Yankees, who put out a press release stating that Alex Rodriguez apologized to the team for his actions over the past several years, will retire PED user Andy Pettitte's number.

You don't see the difference between Alex and Andy? Maybe you aren't aware but Alex repeatedly cheated, repeatedly lied, sued people including the Yankees and team doctor, he went the scorched earth/Lance Armstrong route. Andy admitted his transgressions and is loved by all Yankee fans. He was a Yankee for 15 years, are the Yankees and their fans not allowed to forgive him for one transgression over such a long career? Andy hasn't repeatedly embarrassed himself and the Yankees. The two circumstances couldn't be any different.

It seems very hypocritical that the Yankees are taking the stance they are with A-Rod, including trying to weasel out of paying him his bonuses for passing guys on the HR list because he admitted taking steroids, and a week later they're announcing that they're retiring another PED user's number. If they wanted to retire Pettitte's number, they should have at least waited until A-Rod was gone.

Then again, they shouldn't be retiring the number of a guy with a 3.94 ERA at all, HGH or not.

Guess I have to repeat myself. The Yankees aren't taking the current approach with Alex because he took steroids (repeatedly), they are taking that approach because Alex has gone out his way to throw people under the bus to cover up his repeated lies and cheating. I may agree with your final point about Andy not being deserving because of his on the field play, but Alex and Andy's behavior were/are like night and day.

This is how I feel. Don't get me wrong, he had a pretty solid career with the Yankees. But in what universe is Andy Pettitte good enough to have his number retired along with all of those other famous New York Yankees? I mean, apparently this one, but it doesn't make much sense.

I'm on the fence, but the argument is 3rd winningest pitcher in Yankee history, most post season wins, 3rd in WAR, 3rd in IP, most strikeouts, a cornerstone pitcher for the team last 15-20 years.

That argument is the same as saying "because he played here for a while."

Yup, but their is value in that. Players are honored for years of service all the time. Any other team no one would even talk about it, but because Ruth and Gehrig also had their number retired it's a big deal.

What I hope for my teams:

Orioles win the AL East and the AL pennant

Pirates win the NL Central and the NL pennant and both my teams duke it out for the World series, with the preference being for the Pirates, as long as they aren't wearing the black jerseys(due to a preference for the NL over the AL, and then white/grey over black)

That said, my realistic thoughts:

I honestly trust that the Orioles will make a return to the ALCS, either as a wild card team making it through or the AL East champions

Pirates? Despite having a winning season again, I expect them to finish Third or fourth in the NL Central, which will be the best division in baseball this season. Third behind St. Louis and Cincy, and fourth if the Cubs decide that they are a good team this year.

A universe where the Yankees need to sell tickets since this year's team isn't very good.

Then why won't they retire Bernie Williams' number? I've never heard of him being tied to steroids in any way.

The Diamondbacks retired Luis Gonzalez number.

Yeah, but he was responsible for the single greatest moment in the history of the franchise. They've only been around since 1998 and have 1 World Series championship victory. Comparing them to the Yankees (established in 1903, with 27 World Series champion victories). The only similarity is that they've retired the numbers of guys who's stats aren't “worthy” of the Hall of Fame (Phil Rizzuto has awful stats for a Hall of Famer, but that's a different story). Please tell me that was just a horrible attempt at trolling…

His number is being retired, too. Posada as well:

http://mweb.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/25070848/yankees-also-retiring-numbers-for-bernie-williams-and-jorge-posada

People have been picking and choosing which PED users to be outraged about for a while now. Perhaps since the moment Pettitte just admitted it instead of the standard "deny, deny, deny." Some get a pass, others don't. Not sure I buy the "I only did it once" defense, but if no evidence has come out otherwise it seems like the best route to get people to move on.

Pettitte has had it easier than anyone short of David Ortiz and NFL players. To the point that Ortiz now gets mad (and defended) if you put his name in your mouth when a PED discussion comes up:

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/07/david-ortiz-mlb-network-boston-red-sox-peds

Sammy Sosa alledgedly failed the same anonymous test as Ortiz. How's that working out for him? Go figure.

Playoffs:

AL

1. Seattle

2. Cleveland

3. Toronto

WCs- LA Angels, Boston

NL

1. Washington

2. LA Dodgers

3. Pittsburgh

WCs- St. Louis, NY Mets

ALCS- Seattle over Cleveland

NLCS- LA Dodgers over Washington

WS- LA Dodgers over Seattle

I think there's going to be quite a few 83-87 win teams. Miami, San Fran, San Diego, Cubs, Detroit, White Sox, KC, Baltimore, possibly even Houston, Red Sox, Cards, Mets, with the last 3 getting into the playoffs.
