NFL Merry-Go-Round: Relocation Roundelay

It took a wasted $16 million and being rebuffed by the league, but the Mayor of St. Louis has finally come around to what has been the right approach for a while.

“At this point I’m so frustrated and disappointed with the NFL,” Slay told reporters at City Hall. “Why would anybody want to in any way even entertain any suggestions from the NFL after the way they dealt with St. Louis here? They were dishonest."

Sure, but I bet we hear a different tune in 2025 or so when everyone's fed up with Jacksonville.

Actually, the Coliseum has been maintained fairly well. I wouldn't say it's "gone to :censored: " or "decrpyt [sic]".

It may be old, but it still holds up well for SC games.

I've never been there personally. Just going off of what I've read online that it's a :censored:hole. And also my friends from LA who instructed me to only go to that neighborhood if I wanted to die. Regardless, it would obviously take probably half a billion dollars to get it up to what the NFL considers acceptable as a longterm stadium, and that wouldn't happen even if the Rams didn't have land and intent to build in Inglewood.

It's a quarter step up from the Oakland Coliseum, at best. Probably a bit more run down, but the neighborhood is just slightly less war zoneish.

Overall, it's probably a push.

When did those conversations occur? 1999?

The Exposition Park/Coliseum is directly across the street from USC. The Galen Center construction from 2004-06 is what began the area's gentrification with USC at its lead.

Weird Imagery Theater with Bill Plaschke!

The Rams and Chargers can't just untie a bag of footballs, roll them across the Coliseum floor, and expect everyone to bow and pay $150 for the privilege.

1. Footballs don't really roll, per se, it's more of a tumble or a skip

2. The Coliseum doesn't really have a floor

3. Footballs, thus, especially won't roll well on grass

It is interesting that the "franchise certificate" did not impact you as it was designed to...

Imagine that your significant other just walks out the door one day and then three years later an exact replica of her shows up and says "Hi, I'm back." She may look the same, she may have the same name, but you know in your heart that it's not really her. That's the "new" Browns to me.

I really tried to get onboard with the new Browns but it just didn't take. I'd follow the games but I honestly didn't care if they won or lost. It wasn't the same team and I knew that. I realized my relationship with the new Browns was in serious trouble when I found myself rooting against them when they played the Packers. I finally gave up for good when they changed the uniforms. The uniforms were the last (really the only) connection the new Browns had to the original Browns.

While it will never be quite the same as it was with the original Browns, I'm pretty happy with being a Packers Shareholder and fan. I've liked the Packers since I was a kid so it was a very natural progression. I'm pretty "invested" in the Pack as a fan. Hell, I even got pretty damned upset during the NFC title game last year. That's a good sign for me.

Oh, I am with you. The re-wrote history on paper, but you know the real history.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

Man, can't get over what an upgrade even a temporary stadium is going to be:

dome.jpgColiseum-2012.da_.jpg

Wonder how much the Rams will be allowed to cover up the USC stuff like the Clips do with the Lakers. The Vikings didn't seem to do much to downplay the University of Minnesota's presence.

WHEN I win the lottery tonight, I'm turning that dome into an indoor quarter mile dirt track.

Just noticed the turf doesn't go all the way to the seating bowl in the Jones Dome. lol at Jones Dome. It's funny because it's not that it stops right at the NFL-mandated dotted lines, which might be understandable, it just comes up a couple feet short.

Put me in the camp that is happy with this move (not that there was any doubt about that.) I've been an out-of-market fan (functionally or literally) my entire life, so to quote Eric Dickerson last night, "The Rams are the Rams, wherever they play."

Of course I may need a new shirt or two now at some point.

I was a big All Stars fan too. Man that rivalry we had with the Dayton Triangles. I used to have a banner hanging from my buggy when I would ride down main street with my horses trying to impress all those sexy flapper women. Then I would go to the local speakeasy for some bootlegged hooch. After games I would telegraph my friend a street over and then I would listen to the teams victory song on my phonograph. Polio was a problem in those days but we didn't care.

Ahhh memories.

I must say, GPO... I'm taken aback by your reminiscences. I considered you a cephalopod of good breeding... of wealth, honor and distinction. I had thought you an invertebrate with a taste for the finer things in life. Yet, here I find you waxing nostalgic over buggy-rides, bragging about your attempts to engage in flirtations with brash trollops, and trumpeting your consumption of intoxicating spirits in violation of Federal law. I learn that you were reduced to telegraphing friends and limited to listening to the St. Louis All-Stars' victory song on a phonograph. Egads, man!

In 1923 my father wouldn't have thought to travel the streets of St. Louis in anything but his chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost limousine... unless, of course, it was to take his newly-acquired Duesenberg Model A touring car for a spin. If you were unwilling to secure such a vehicle - or, Heaven forbid, incapable of purchasing a like conveyance - surely you could have traveled to your unseemly assignations on one of the public lorries operated by the People's Motorbus Company.

And am I to understand that your household lacked a telephone? Why, the moment American Telephone & Telegraph introduced the Bell System machine switching exchange in 1921, Father not only acquired several thousand additional shares of AT&T preferred stock, but he purchased four - FOUR! - Western Electric desk stand candlestick telephones for our family manse, as well. We made frequent use of them, too... well, so long as the family wasn't in the midst of a meal, or gathered in the parlor listening to our Radiola Grand.

Father was an absolute fanatic about tuning into the programming on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's station, KSD. I have such vivid memories of him listening to the daily market reports, the newspaper folded in his lap and a wreath of cigar smoke circling above his head. In the evening, after dinner, he would call on Mother, Clarence, Rose, Lavinia and I to join him in availing ourselves of KSD's evening presentations - classical concerts performed by the St. Louis Symphony, popular music offered up by the likes of the Statler Hotel Orchestra or the St. Louis University Glee Club, elocution lessons and brief addresses, the late news report.

THOSE are memories, sir! As opposed to your recollections of apparent poverty and confirmed licentiousness!!!

As a former Rams fan here in St. Louis, this sucks. I don't see myself ever having a strong interest in the NFL ever again. I will actually be rooting for whoever is playing the Rams. Hopefully for LA fans Stan Kroenke and the NFL won't screw you guys over as much as he did St. Louis. The Rams will be missed here in St. Louis.

Pretty typical of them to leave as soon as they begin to get good too.

Well, gee, now that I see that this happened, I find this turf issue utterly ridiculous. That took the fun out of everything.

If the CVC can spring for a few more yards of turf so that people don't run onto a concrete floor and crash into a wall, maybe the Bears and Chiefs could play each other in preseason games down there for a couple years, kinda make a half-hearted gesture to the market. Games there drew road fans really well, so imagine if games had two of them!
