OK...if this stadium DOES end up getting built, is UNLV gonna try and join the Pac-12?  Because that looks FAR too grandiose to be a Mountain West stadium.

To be fair San Diego State shares a stadium with the Chargers, Georgia State shares the dome with the Falcons & South Florida shares a stadium with the Buccaneers.

I personally believe the Raiders could make the move to Vegas without UNLV being part of the deal. However, the stadium/dome would definitely need to be off the Rebels campus in case a bunch of rich dudes decide to move the school out of the equation.

This time, the stadium IS proposed to be off campus. The property is about two blocks away.

Again, Majestic Realty tried to get state money for the same stadium before but on the UNLV campus combined with student housing and mixed retail. It went nowhere... TWICE.

And while Sheldon Adelson (Las Vegas Sands/The Venetian and owner of the LVRJ) is in favor of the project, MGM Resorts, the other major hotelier/casino corporation is strongly against any hotel taxes going to a stadium. They want it diverted to repairing/expanding the aging LV Convention Center.

Sounds from what I've read that public money is a non-starter in Vegas.  We'll see.

A special session of the Nevada Legislature needs called in August to approve diverting room-tax funds for the stadium and elected officials in November elections probably aren't really keen on a special session.

Best for them to wait until their regular 2017 general session.

When does that regular session start?  I'm presuming it'll be after the NFL relocation deadline, bumping this circus to another year.

Nevada doesn't have an annual legislative session.

Unless a special session is called, the Nevada Legislature meets for ~120 days every ODD numbered years.

Raiders/LVSands/Majestic wants to try to get Clark County to do the deal if they can by law.

MGM will fight.

Holy :censored: , I had forgotten that.  That's downright irresponsible.

So unless Sheldon can somehow convince them to convene a special session, the Raiders have one four-month window to get a state deal done before this gets pushed to 2019?  Yikes.  They better hope this can get done at a county level.

The previous UNLV stadium projects were announced about 6-10 months prior to the legislative session yet never made it out of committee.

Field of Schemes for Las Vegas illustrates their issues with the univetsity, the city, Clark County, and the state.

And Davis and Adelson spoke to the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee. A committee started in 2015 and while the UNLV president is Vice Chair both a MGM and a Caesars have a dude is on this.

Welcome to state government in the American West.  It's amazing they can get anything done!

Yeah, the idea of trying to get state/public funds for a nearly billion dollar project in the state of Nevada is preposterous.

Also, the Raiders would pretty much instantly go from a team I've always liked to probably my least favorite team in the league if they end up in Vegas.

I say move em to Sacramento. Move everything to Sacramento.

Sacramento Raiders would be cool.  I'm already feeling less about the LV Raiders the more I think about it.

Las Vegas' Mayor of little power Jane Goodman, spoke to ESPN's Andy Katz's Capital Gang podcast regarding a financial decision she has zero control over...funding for the proposed Las Vegas stadium. She and her former mayor husband still think MLS would join the Raiders and UNLV.

Neither side really discussed that the $750MM in  public money lies on a decision of the Nevada Legislature.

In bringing up soccer, she forgot about the time Chivas and Club America met at Sam Boyd Stadium in 2013.

  • 3 weeks later...

An exec. for LV Sands Corp. said that the site for the stadium may not be at the UNLV owned property behind the MGM Grand, but on The Strip on the site of the former Riveria Hotel.

Quote

A top Las Vegas Sands Corp. executive said today that the proposed 65,000-seat football stadium his company is pushing for may end up being built on the Strip.

When plans for the stadium that could house an NFL team were first unveiled, discussions centered on a 42-acre site on Tropicana Avenue owned by UNLV. But Rob Goldstein, Sands’ president and chief operating officer, told tourism leaders today that the Tropicana site appears to be “disappearing as an option.”

Concerns about that site, located near Koval Lane, include its proximity to McCarran International Airport and traffic in the area.

Appearing before the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee, Goldstein today mentioned two possible locations on the Strip: land near SLS Las Vegas and the site of the shuttered Riviera hotel, which is where the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority plans to expand its convention space. The site of Cashman Field in downtown Las Vegas is another option.

Note, the Riveria site is currently owned by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and where the expansion of the Convention Center would occur (and who also wants the hotel tax money.)

Hmm.  The UNLV agreement falling apart?

Anybody in Las Vegas able to tell us anything about the Convention and Visitors Authority?  They were already asked to forego their tax money, now they'd have to give up the convention center expansion?

The LVCVA is not forgoing any tax money for the expansion of the convention center yet.  They currently receive 31% of the hotel room taxes levied, typically over $20M/month.  The other 69% goes to other groups like Clark County Schools, area transportation, and the state's general fund.

Basically, their job and the stadium project are competing projects for which LV Sands/Majestic asked to a 0.9% increase in the current 12% hotel room tax.

The Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee (SNTIC), is who reports to the governor in regards to construction/improvement projects for next year's legislative session.

According to what I've read in the RJ today (which is owned by Adelson) the CVA is going ahead with the demolition of the Rivera and the Convention Center expansion is still on.  That said, the Rivera site looks too small to fit a football stadium on and I would think Cashman Center downtown would be the same.  The more interesting site would be the festival grounds across LV Boulevard from SLS which would hopefully bring the added benefit of spurring development on the north strip.
