NFL Merry-Go-Round: Relocation Roundelay

Perhaps San Diego kept low-balling the Chargers because they thought 56 years of history would keep the Chargers from seriously considering moving.  Then the team called the city's bluff.  San Diego is now out of the club.

If San Diego now wants back in, and they want in badly enough, they'll pay up...even if it means getting the Raiders.  And if the NFL loves San Diego that much (especially as a Super Bowl rotational city), they'll gladly give an assist to the city.

San Diego doesn't want back in that badly. They're not paying up, the public was very clear that's not going to fly in November. And any expenditure including what was being offered to the Chargers at the end, $375 mil, would require a public vote in 2018. It won't pass.

So the outgoing team's arguable number 1 rival would move in AND presumably keep the identity that the local fans have despised for 50 years?

Has this ever happened in sports?

This isn't Yankees/Red Sox, Packers/Bears or Habs/Leafs level, but maybe something like if the Penguins left Pittsburgh and the Flyers moved in and called themselves the Pittsburgh Flyers. Pretty bad.

Well in 1972 Carroll Rosenbloom who owned the Baltimore Colts swapped teams with Robert Irsay and the Los Angeles Rams so maybe something can be done.

This is pure comedy. Can they just switch names with the Chargers??

That almost certainly would happen.

The Steelers and the Eagles also did it in 1941. Art Rooney sold the Steelers to Alexis Thompson and then turned around and bought a 50% stake in the Eagles, then a month or two later Thompson swapped franchises with Rooney and Bert Bell.

Could you imagine Derek Carr and the rest of that roster on the Chargers all of the sudden, and vice versa with Phillip Rivers and the rest of them in silver and black? Same team, just different clothes. What a total mind :censored: that would be. That's some Faceoff level nonsense.

The NFL is a quarter step away from being the NHL.

The NFL has to guard about being too greedy. The reason Jacksonville hasn't tried to or moved is the owner is trying to make it work in the market that he's in.It will be interesting to see what ticket prices will be for the Chargers in a 30,000 seat stadium and what year 2 interest will bring in supporting the Rams again ticket wise.On Newballpark.org on the Jan 22 article it shows the Raiders raising ticket prices.First increase in a while. If this means not selling out and the league enforcing the blackout rule then Mark Davis will be remembered as the one who killed the goose that laid the golden egg.

Hilarious but ultimately it won't happen. I mean the Raiders are still all in on Vegas with or without Adelson and Goldman.

I mean they've already got about $1.1 billion to put toward a stadium when you consider the money they've already put together including the public funds, NFL and Raiders. That would build US Bank Stadium in Minnesota which just opened. Something like that would work just as well in Las Vegas as it worked in Minneapolis.

Does anyone remember how much it cost to add all those seats at the Q in '97? Because I'm pretty sure a whole new Charger stadium could have been built at that same price tag back then.

$86 million I believe all told for the expansion and renovation
