Price for a new stadium would have been close to double back then. I mean Jacksonville's stadium opened two years before Qualcomm's renovations were complete and cost $134 million and Carolina's opened the year before and cost $242 million. That said, spending $160-$200 mil back then would have been a comparative bargain given how out of control NFL stadium costs have gotten.

$250.5 million to build FedEx Field in '97

$220 Million to build M&T Bank Stadium in '98

$168.5 million to build Ray Jay in '98

$290 million to build Nissan Stadium in '99

 

...I could go all day.

 

So yeah, I would've took $172 Million in 1997 over $1.5 billion in 2017 if I could turn back time.

Hell only had to turn it back 10 years to get to a reasonable cost. Look at University of Phoenix Stadium. Opened in 2006 at a cost of $455 million, and that's a well appointed stadium that includes both a retractable roof and a retractable field. It wasn't until 2008 or so that suddenly stadium prices ballooned. First Lucas Oil in Indy jumps up to $720 mil and then a year later Jerry's World jumps another $500 mil to $1.3 billion. To that point everything other than Solider Field (with it's complex new stadium inside an old stadium scheme) had cost at or under $500 million. Suddenly Jerry's World precipitates an $800 million increase out of the blue 3 years after University of Phoenix. And for what? A bigger scoreboard and some stripper poles?

 

And suddenly after that every stadium costs over $1 billion. It just doesn't make much sense. Materials and labor cost have not ballooned that much, and it sure as hell isn't inflation driving it. I mean by comparison looking at the next biggest sport, MLB, their stadium costs other than the outlier Yankee Stadium, have remained right around the $500 million mark for some time. MLB's two most recent parks Target Field ($545 mil) and Marlins Park (which has a roof and cost $515 mil) both opened in 2010 and 2012 respectively and both were less than the two non-Yankee Stadium parks who preceeded them, Nationals Park in 2008 for $611 mil and Citi Field in 2009 for $632 million.

Is it sad that when the alternative is the Raiders moving to Las Vegas of all places, that I actually am hoping for Raiders-to-SD and resulting Raiders/Chargers franchise swap?

 

The idea of a franchise swap involving two divisional rivals and three different California cities is so absurd that I really want to see it happen, just for the sheer hilarity of it all. I'll laugh my ass off at the image of Philip Rivers wearing the silver and black in LA.

To be fair, the price of concrete has consistently risen by ~5% per year since 1980.  OTOH, steel really fluctuates.

This isn't Yankees/Red Sox, Packers/Bears or Habs/Leafs level, but maybe something like if the Penguins left Pittsburgh and the Flyers moved in and called themselves the Pittsburgh Flyers. Pretty bad.

Not only that, but San Diego would do the unthinkable and become a Raiders town overnight. And the Raiders' mere presence in SoCal would destroy any chance for the Chargers (or Rams, for that matter) to build a fanbase in LA. It would be an unprecedented middle finger from the city of San Diego to the Spanos family.

I mentioned it yesterday...San Diego very well could have low-balled the Chargers because they thought 50+ years of history would deter the team from moving out of town, and the Chargers called their bluff.  It's not very different from what the Braves went through with the city of Atlanta.  The city kept making promises, some of them nearly 50 years in the making, and thought that eventually the team would accept their nickels instead of the dollars someone else could throw the Braves' way.

 

San Diego is now out of the NFL Club.  If they want back in, they now know what the stakes are.  Now they'll be in the business of luring a team, and the best way to do that is throwing some money around.  I would be shocked if San Diego's next offer for acquiring a team isn't more lucrative than their last few offers for the Chargers.

Only way is if the NFL somehow orchestrated a deal: Spanos gives up the Chargers name, Davis gives up the Raiders name. And they switch names only. All to piss off Kroenke.

Oh it wouldn't happen.But if the Raiders leave the Bay Area in search of greener pastures not counting Sacramento;either LA,Vegas,the #6 market in the NFL is without an AFC team and there is a stadium already built with an unused home locker room that would be a juicy carrot for someone.If for whatever reason Vegas becomes unworkable for the Raiders then Santa Clara is the Raiders best option.Should the Chargers of moved?Hindsight says no but maybe it's a wait and see.
