NFL Merry-Go-Round: Relocation Roundelay

I still don't see how playing two (or more) lame duck seasons in Oakland can wind up being anything other than an unmitigated disaster.  It's like getting a divorce but living in the same house for a few years.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Raiders find a way to screw this up.

Another thing that sucks about this is that it means the Raiders will become a roof-and-carpet team after spending their entire existence in natural conditions. They had been one of the most traditional sports teams around and now they'll be playing on plastic grass. What crap.

It's really sad. Oakland was perfect for them. They played in the worst stadium, on a baseball field, in the most badass uniforms that would actually get dirty. And they were actually turning the corner into an exciting team.

I'm almost done with the NFL, and this might be one of the last straws. I'm bracing myself for 10-15 years from now when the Bengals ask Cincinnati for a billion dollars for a new stadium and the city tells them to fall in a hole. Having a local team is the only reason I still pay attention, but you won't see me on twitter dissecting mock drafts.

And, worst of all, they're the last vestige of this:

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I've soured on the NFL tremendously and am to the point where I'm just over it. Now that there isn't a pro team left in the area other than the Niners (who barely count, and who have already screwed taxpayers for a new yard), what's the point? I even quit fantasy football for the upcoming year because I just can't bring myself to care anymore. I never expected it's get to this point, as football was my very favorite sport for years, but it's just gotten to the point where it's all too ugly.

Few, if any, on this board are old enough to remember the NFL not being #1.  But it has not always been by the current margin. And starting, I don't know, 15 years ago, when it was moving from "clear #1" to "obsession that dwarfs all other sports 365 days per year," I think the NFL and the media that promotes it have done a masterful job at keeping it in the forefront of sports news.  And it's just kept growing (up until a year or two ago).  And while the really grandiose stuff (permanent team in London, 18-game schedule) has been calmed down, the league's head is a bit big.  I think I am in a small (but maybe bigger than I think) minority that's been turned off by it.  I'm sick of the obsession.  I'm sick of it taking over sports news during the World Series, NCAA tournament, etc.  I have NFL fatigue and I'll never be back to where I was as a kid (with the NFL my clear #1).

It seems to have peaked.  It had to happen eventually.  Sadly, I think it'll bounce back this year without Kaepernick in the league.  Fans can deal with players that torture dogs and beat women up but they get a little snowflakey when someone does not approach flag etiquette as they do.

Something like the Raiders moving from that dump to a modern building in Vegas kind of does take away from the NFL of my youth (though truthfully, I've never had a soft spot for baseball infields in football) but I don't think this will play a key role if I jump ship.  Either way, they were going to move into modern digs at some point.  But it does feel like something "romantic" is being lost.

I've kinda thought about jumping ship on the NFL if, on week 1, Joe Mixon is on a roster and Kaepernick is not.  I get it.  Most NFL fans demand that flag etiquette be followed as they'd follow it; and they don't care if actual bad guys are on the team.  And Kaep may in fact not be a starter at this time.  So maybe I'm wrong.  That's OK.  I don't have to be right.  Given the CTE issues, how full of itself the league is, the tiresome coverage, the frequent movement of franchises, the difficulty playing defense, and the need to have a top-flight QB to have even a chance, I have enough pushing me away.

(regarding the bold)...but the Niners will count someday.  They'll be back, which lends to my post.  Someday, when the Vikings are in the playoffs will I really be able to ignore?  Will I not be excited if they are going to a Super Bowl and they actually have a chance to get that monkey off their (and Minnesota's) back?  I can't promise...so I am not thumping my chest about being "done."  I don't know.  But If Kaepernick's not on a roster and a bunch of violent sociopaths are, I anticipate taking yet another step away, at least for a while.

I quit fantasy last season and not only did I not miss it, but life got better. It was also the first season where I skipped most games that didn't involve the Bengals and that was fine too.

Football was my favorite sport when I was a kid and into early teenage years and I never imagined that would change. My disinterest started a few years back when the players were locked out and I got really into baseball that summer. When the NFL announced they had a reached a deal I was sort of like "cool, but I got used to the idea that you wouldn't be around sooo..."

Here's my grievances: same teams always win, league has preferred markets, seems to be the most difficult sport to gain upward mobility, watching guys get maimed just kind of grosses me out now, publicly financed monstrosity stadiums that billionaires profit off of grosses me out, that the league has no problem moving franchises out of cities with decades of history grosses me out (I mean, other leagues do too, but the NFL seems to be the most shamelessly capitalistic about it), there are too many complicated rules, there are too many penalties, the officials are terrible, the officials have too much influence, all of the rules are too skewed for the offense, has become way too dependent on one position (IE there's like 9 good quarterbacks in the world for 32 teams), there's too many commercials, dumbest fans, the players seem like the least likable athletes in sports, there's too little action per hour, tickets are too expensive, the in-stadium product for a fan is by far the worst out of NHL, NBA, MLB, MLS, and like OnWis said it became this huge thing that dominates sports news 365 days a year. Now should not be the time to talk about football.

I'm kind of fine moving forward here without the NFL. I have my hockey and my baseball obsessions, growing interest in soccer, and call me when the NBA gets to the conference finals and I'm set as a sports fan. That fills out the entire calendar year.

Hate to be that guy but the Raiders will be playing on roll out grass like the Cardinals.

Yes, that's quite a nice rendering, but still not proof.

This is alleged plan to have a grass tray.

Again, Mark Davis has and the stadium authority have no agreement.

Quote

“It’s the end of the beginning,” said Jeremy Aguero, a principal with Las Vegas-based Applied Analysis, which serves as staff to the Las Vegas Stadium Authority. “It was a hugely important step, but there’s still a ton of work to do.”

Aguero said the Stadium Authority has to verify that several conditions have been met before ground can be broken on a stadium. Those approvals have to come in votes in public Stadium Authority board meetings, and Aguero is skeptical that the checklist will be completed in time for consideration at the next scheduled meeting, April 20. In fact, it could take several months for complete compliance with Senate Bill 1.
NFL's Oakland Raiders moving to Las Vegas
Las Vegas Review Journal

Here’s what has to happen before any work can begin on the stadium:

■ The authority board has to verify with the NFL that relocation officially has been approved and that the team formally elects to move.

■ The board has to sign off on a development agreement with a qualified partner. The Raiders drive that process, but the board must verify that the developers have the financial wherewithal and expertise to build the stadium. That’s why the announcement about Bank of America being part of the financing was so important for the Raiders.

■ The board also must approve a lease agreement with a stadium events company. That also could be the Raiders, but it also might be a third party that has expertise in managing stadiums and arenas. The Anschutz Entertainment Group’s AEG Live, which in a joint venture with MGM Resorts International operates T-Mobile Arena and also manages the Colosseum at Caesars Palace; Los Angeles-based Live Nation Entertainment; MSG Entertainment, operators of Madison Square Garden and a partner for a future entertainment venue with Las Vegas Sands; and Legends, which operates Yankee Stadium and Jerry Jones’ AT&T Stadium in Dallas are among the big players in event management.

Once a development agreement is struck, more details about the specifics of the stadium will emerge. Will it cost $1.9 billion? Will it have 65,000 seats? Will it be domed, and if so, will the roof be rigid or capable of sliding open like at two stadiums in Phoenix? That will be up to the development company.

The $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat proposal that has been bandied about to this point was first proposed by the family of Sheldon Adelson and Majestic Realty. They’re no longer in the deal, but their figures were used by the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee to demonstrate how financing could occur to craft Senate Bill 1.

What the development company builds could be larger, more expensive or less expensive. Senate Bill 1 targets a venue with approximately 65,000 seats, but that could grow. Specifics haven’t been disclosed by the Raiders.

Taken from the LVRJ story, I linked to yesterday after the owner's vote:

The Raiders shouldn't be playing in a "palace".  You can have a stadium with 1st class clubs, suites, and all the other bells and whistles that still looks like a football stadium.  That park is just too glamorous for the Raiders - it just doesn't fit their brand.  Look at Pittsburgh.  The stadium isn't great by any stretch (actually, it's barely even good by most measures) but it makes them money and if the market could have supported it they could have certainly worked more suites and fancy features into it.  My point is that it fits their brand.  It's a nice-enough stadium that still looks like a stadium that the Pittsburgh Steelers would play in.

This... "thing" doesn't look like a stadium that the Las Vegas Oakland Raiders would play in.  They're always going to be the Oakland Raiders, regardless of where they play.  The Oakland part is almost as big a part of the brand as the Raiders part.  And part of the Oakland Raiders brand is a park with only the bare essentials, and fans with stabbin' knives.  THat should be maintained wherever they go.

Meh, the Raiders are brash.  They might even take back the crown from the Cowboys now on that front.

The Chargers are giving each season ticket holder* a jersey.

http://e.chargers.com/t/ViewEmail/i/3A5E047944044B26

It says "game" jersey, but given the availability of women's cut (and reference to the men's XL), I assume it's a replica.

Too bad they couldn't give choice of player and jersey color to add a little variety to what the hundreds of these fans will be wearing to the game.

Actually it says season ticket "member."  No sure whether that's one jersey per seat or one per account.

"Game Jersey" is Nike's name for their lowest-price replica.  Authentics are "Elite", the best replicas are "Limited", and the regular replicas are "Game".

Interesting/bizarre that they're giving away Rivers jerseys, since that's the one I would expect them to sell the most of.  I do like that they're giving away the powder blue, though.  Really should be their primary color.

You know how the NBA requires a city name a day a basketball in each team's logo? I wonder if they're pushing NFL teams to remove the city name as much as possible so teams more easily move around like this.

I've never noticed city name on NFL uniforms that much (which seems kind of weird), but it seems to have been pretty lucky for the Rams and Chargers that they could pack up existing inventory no problem and start selling in their new location.

Also, side note, I was in LA last month and asked a Lyft driver his opinion on the Chargers v Rams. He basically didn't have one; a giant shrug to the Chargers and muted excitement for the old days of the Rams. He wanted them back in blue and yellow though.

The stadium site is within a 5-10 minute drive (maybe more with traffic) of McCarran Airport, just on the other side of I-15; the UNLV campus is just north of the airport.  Speaking of its location...just like with the Inglewood site, I wonder if the FAA will raise concerns about construction too.
