MLB hats that would benefit from different colored bill

I disagree. I think they look great in football, specifically as pants for gold and silver teams. Same with the Spurs' side panels.

The Astros' gold brim was fine as a fashion hat, but it didn't work as part of a baseball uniform. Baseball, more than any other sport, has traditional uniforms that don't mesh well with metallics. It's even worse with silver, as then you're combining metallic silver with gray. The White Sox' longtime BP cap with the silver brim is in the same category as that Astros' cap. Great as fashion cap (I have one), great as something which isn't part of their regular game uniform, but awful if thrown into actual games.

The Brewers "gold" jerseys look like crap because they're beige while the accents on the cap and other jerseys are metallic gold. Metallics in baseball can only be used successfully as accent colors. Trim on the hats is great, trim on the numbers is fine, but the only time metallic numbers have ever looked good is on the Mariners' teal alts.

In general, I agree. But if any team ought to be able to pull off metallic material, it ought to be the one whose name lends itself to a Jetsons-like "space age" theme.

Illwauk, I see your point, but I feel that the Astros finally got it right by returning to blue and orange. Well, their jerseys are bland and forgettable now, but at least they're wearing the correct colors and have a decent logo. Going with metallic colors for a team named Astros would be fine otherwise, but I think team history trumps any desire to play up the name.

I don't agree with the people who say things like "big city teams don't need gimmicks playing up the name, their logos should just be letters for the city." I think the Bengals looked great from 81-03. I also think the Chicago Bulls' logo is great and sufficiently "big city" despite representing the team name. However, there are certain times that repping the team name only works in a vacuum. For instance, people who argued the Blue Jays last colors were better because they accurately reflected the bird. Be that as it may, that's not how the Toronto Blue Jays should have looked based on 25 years of history and a few championships. And needless to say, the same goes for people who call for the Detroit Tigers to add orange to their home unis. Yes, it would make them look better. I don't even particularly like the Tigers' home unis, but they're historic and beyond reproach at this point.

Orange socks with navy blue stripes would look pretty sweet for the Tigers with their away uniforms though.

I think the Rangers would really benefit from wearing a royal cap with a red bill. It would harken back to their original look and they could wear it with either the blue or red jersey. I never liked that look for the Cubs, but the Rangers could use something to set them apart from the other blue and red teams.

I disagree. Orange has never been anything but an accent color on their uniforms. Orange socks would stick out like a sore thumb. Blue socks with orange stripes, however, could be really good.

I agree. I was just saying orange with blue stripes because that would resemble actual tiger colors. :P

"Astros pulled it off just fine." . I see, yes...but for me it looks lemon colored, not gold. But that is perhaps the whole white-gold / blue dress thing all over again :-) eye of the beholder

It looks lemon in that photo only. In real life, the brim was a strong metallic gold. While I liked the solid navy hat better (one of my favorite hats of all time), then gold brim was a good alternate.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

My memory was telling me there were only three stripes, but I was obviously mistaken. Interestingly, I found a different picture with only four stripes. I didn't post it because it had a Getty watermark on it.

Those are nuts. It's looks like he's wearing two pairs of Chicago Bears socks at varying heights, which is something we see every week now that wearing half a dozen pairs of socks is NFL chic. Tame those down to 3-4 stripes and probably remove the white and they'd be on to something.

Don't get me wrong... I like the way the Astros look now and would be fine if they stayed with that look for a long time. I just wouldn't be mad if the tried reintroducing some metallic material in the future. Possibly even a metallic orange (which, IMO, actually fits the character of the Astros history quite perfectly).

Yeah, I don't think there's any rhyme or reason to this either. Sure, it's probably easier in general for bigger cities to pull off a civic themed identity, but the Blackhawks sweaters (which do nothing of the sort) are about as iconic as a hockey sweater can get. Conversely, it actually makes more sense for a team like the Packers, THE smallest city in pro sports, to base their identity on the first half of their name rather than the last half.

When posting that, I thought about the Astros going to a metallic orange. It could work in theory, but with the nature of baseball uniforms and having to reproduce the metallic orange on apparel, it might be more trouble than it was worth. Still intriguing, though.

The set with four stripes looks much more subdued.

I didn't post that picture because it had a Getty Images watermark on it. I wasn't sure if it was OK to post Getty pics on here since the site has ads.

Wearing this hat everyday would drastically improve the Marlins' look:

pDSP1-15026268p275w.jpg

It would look very good with every jerseys they have. It would even make the black uniform look barely acceptable adding a little color to this set...

I still can't believe that people actually like what the Astros are wearing now. It's bland, boring, and the colors do absolutely nothing for me. And I don't care what anyone says, that clip art H star they have now is probably the worst logo in all of sorts IMO. That was one of the biggest uniform downgrades I can ever remember.

IMO, it's still better than the crap color combo they had before.
