NFL Uniform Tweaks - Texans Added 5-13-16

Long time lurker here and finally decided to join so I could start posting stuff I work on to get some CC.

This thread will basically just be slight tweaks to current NFL uniforms based off my still pretty novice Illustrator skills.

Uniform template taken from template thread - Thanks to OP who made it

Fonts - Many fonts and just about all the ones used in my mock-ups are from Conrad. Thanks to Conrad.

Disclaimer on this thread so that nobody will be misled: these mock-ups posted will just be slight tweaks to uniforms a la the title of the thread so there won't be any mind-blowing original concepts or original drawn from scratch team logos in these mock-ups.

This is more a cross-over of my vision of how certain teams would look in my "perfect world" along with looking for CC on my Illustrator skills and hopefully get some helpful tips.

As of now, not every team has or will be mocked up as some teams I think are currently pretty dang close to perfect: Packers, Bears, to name a couple.

Some of these mock-ups are ones we've already seen before so I'm giving disclaimer beforehand that I'm not taking credit for coming up with these; and if posted, they've been posted to get feedback on the execution of the design and tips to better it.

I'm going to start posting multiple teams at a time from one division if applicable and will wait for CC and try to answer/explain/reply to any comments afterward.

Let's start off:

NFC West:

Arizona Cardinals:

For me personally, the Cardinals are the poster child for a team needing a new uniform set ASAP. Living in Arizona, I can't stand the sight of these uniforms since they scream mid-2000's Reebok era with the piping disaster.

I'll admit when I was 15-16 years old when these first dropped; I thought they were "kewl" since the previous set was rather bland but this current set has not aged well at all in my opinion.

I've seen lot of Cardinals concepts mocked up taking them back to a very traditional retro look and while I agree that it would be 100x better than the current set; I feel like a team such as the Cardinals (despite being one of the oldest franchises) needs to have a more modern set since they honestly (and no offense to any Cards fans) don't have much "history". I think they got to go to a similar route as the Seahawks in being contemporary and not so much straight retro old school traditional style.

So my mock-ups of the Cardinals is somewhat simple in general but I've given them a monochrome look to wear at home sorta how the Seahawks are and I think it kind of ties in since they've been a tough home team the last year or two since Arians took over and with the whole "Red Sea" nickname they use.

My own CC right off the bat on these: I think the pants stripe design may be too "random" but I was playing around making arcs and didn't want to make every single team have traditional 2 stripe lines. It doesn't match with the traditional striping on the helmet.

Edit: Here's my revised Cardinals w/ Icgreiog03's suggested changes. Took off the helmet stripes and changed the pants side pattern to something that fits better w/ the uniform and team.

Pants side design taken from "feather" parts on the "crown" of the Cardinals head logo.

Latest Edit: Took off the Cardinal head logo off the sleeves and used an Arizona state flag design to replace it.

Also, I did my best to fix the whole perspective angle issues on the front and back view of the sleeves that davidmiller5 pointed out. Not perfect which you will notice if you look a lot closer but I did it to best of my capabilities right now.

I didn't want to use the official state flag colors on these uniforms even though it's been done before in real life.

Just seemed like it'd be forcing it and the dark royal blue from the official flag would clash w/ the Cardinal red and black colors. So to counter this, I did the flag sleeve designs in a tonal color-up that matches the home/road jerseys so it's not so blatant in your face. For the black alt, I did full Cardinals team colored AZ state flag for the color-up.

Have 2 diff versions for each home/road/alt set that I tinkered with. Decided to go with the ones posted below where the home and roads have a tonal color effect to blend in w/ each jersey and then the black alt has a full team colored flag sleeve design.

The thinking for the black alt was that this set in this universe would be worn for marquee games (prime time, playoff/standing implications, rivalry game, etc) and this is where Cards fans would love to show off their Arizona pride even more than they already do.

In the spoilers, I have the flag sleeve designs for the roads that would match the color-up of the flag sleeve design in the home posted above while the black alt's have a blacked out gradient tonal effect.

And I do realize how I chose which black alt to use for my "final" set doesn't match how the home/roads are tonal color gradients on the flag design but like I mentioned above, my thinking was to have the "prime time" black alt have a flag design that's more showy and not as subtle as the home/road.

Santa Clara 49ers of San Francisco:

Up next are my now seemingly cursed Niners.

I honestly think the current set is fine aside from the cut off stripes on the sleeves. If they didn't have that non-sense, it'd be close to perfect IMO.

But for the sake of posting a tweaked version of uniform sets, I decided to do one for my Niners since there's no way I was going to do Seattle and not play around with my favorite team lol.

Main tweaks: added more gold to the jersey to balance out the colors.

Since it's hard to tell based off Illustrator, the "gold" in these mock-ups is metallic gold so the metallic gold pants match the metallic gold helmet since a lot of people tend to complain how it doesn't match anymore. Metallic gold stripes have also been added to the sleeve stripe pattern along with metallic gold outline around the numbers.

I added a white pants option as well as sort of a nod to the 1994 season when they continued wearing the anniversary uniforms all the way to the SB win over the Chargers.

I do have an alternate set of these uniforms that has black trim added to the numbers and sleeves since another common complaint I see on the current Niners set is how the logo has black in it but nowhere to be found on the uniforms. I don't really agree with that sentiment so this posted version below is what I'm rolling with for now.

Edit: Alternate set w/ the black trim is posted in the spoilers below.

Seattle Seahawks:

It pains me to admit this about as much as the pain the Seahawks have inflicted on the Niners the last 3 years that I think they have a great color set that actually has a story (even if it is your typical Nike marketing rubbish) that flows and makes sense in relation to the region of Seattle and Washington state.

The uniforms I don't think are perfect but I don't find them horrible like a lot of people do and actually like them better than the last set they had. The Shaun Alexander-era set got stale pretty quick for me so the 2012 re-brand was a welcome sight after giving it some time to let it grow on me.

My tweaks consist of removing the oddly placed gray horizontal graphic stripe across the shoulder/chest area and giving them a more traditional striping on sleeves.

Another small change is switching the gray part in the Seahawk logo to lime green to give it some more pop.

I know the Seahawks have made the monochrome look their trademark look over the years but I like how the wolf grey pants go with the navy jersey so in this universe, the Seahawks wear the wolf grey pants with the home navy jerseys.

White pants have been dropped from this set as I've always thought they didn't really go with the uniform and navy-grey-lime colorway.

I've also eliminated the monochrome wolf grey set. I don't mind it personally but doesn't fit in IMO.

As a Cardinals fan, none taken. I actually tend to 'forget' any QB we've ever had that's not named Plummer, Warner, or Palmer. Most of what I see wrong in these are minor and because, as you say, you are learning the software. But I won't get into that as I am inexperienced with it myself. From a design standpoint, these are solid starts. I'm not sure what you're trying to do with the pants for the Cardinals; they don't match anything else on the uniform and don't really fit on the pants either. I think with some tweaking, they could have a feather-y appearance which could potentially add something unique to the identity. I would get rid of the helmet stripe entirely, however. They added a stripe to the quarterbacks' helmets (so they could better see which way they were looking on film) but I didn't think they looked good because the logo actually wraps pretty far around the helmet, and wound up almost in contact with the stripe. It looked cluttered to me and I wasn't a fan.

Also, why did you change the number font? I like what you changed it to, I'm just curious.

The 49ers are solid, it's a good clean look that is consistent and fits the team well.

Same for the Seahawks, I also like their new look, and your tweak on the shoulders makes the look better. I would just remove the weird feather pattern thing on the helmet, pants, and numbers. The helmet stripe on the top doesn't appear on the back of your template also.

The socks for all three teams have the same design though, and it only really fits the 49ers. The Cardinals and Seahawks need different socks.

Solid start though. Good work so far.

Yea, I definitely want to change the pants design for the Cards. As you said, it doesn't really flow w/ rest of the uniform and duly noted on the striping on the helmet. It does look cluttered in real life so I'll make a note to take it off once I go back to revising the Cards.

No specific reason on the number font change. I just enjoyed thumbing through the millions of fonts Conrad hooked up this forum with so I was merely wanting to experiment and play around w/ different fonts so when I was trying to make over the Cards; decided to use diff font.

On the Seahawks, the part where the feather pattern doesn't extend all the way back is attributed to me not knowing how to get the pattern to turn into a point like how it is in real life haha. I briefly tried making the shape but was unsuccessful so I think to clean up the concept; I'll go back and just take off the feather pattern on the helmet. I left the pattern on the numbers since that's how it is on the actual jerseys (although it's probably more tonal than how my mock-ups are making it).

I'll admit on the sock patterns, I made them the same 3 stripe pattern for all the teams I did. Now that you point it out, it does seem odd so I'll go back and fix these when I get a chance before I move onto posting other teams.

Thanks for the CC!

None of the photos are loading except the Seahawks, which are great btw

having the same problem, can't view Arizona

Sorry about that guys. I'll fix this when I get a chance. They were showing though last night when I started this thread as you can see since Icgreig03 commented on them.

Any sites you guys suggest to use to upload the PDF's? I was using http://pdf2jpg.net/ and any explanation why the Cards and 49ers aren't showing now but Seahawks still are?

Edit: Think I've figured out the issue so I'll fix this later.

Everything has been re-posted and Cards changes have been added.

Who do you make a spoiler?

I really like what you've done here. The 2x outline on the 49ers is not my favorite, but I like this. Welcome to the boards.

The 3rd icon from the very top left menu of buttons where it's called "Special BBCode" it will let you insert spoilers.

The se are good looks for the teams. I would suggest you remove the outline on the 49ers jerseys. The gold bleeds into the white and makes the numbers look fuzzy on both jerseys. It is a personal preference thing, but I don't like helmet logos being replicated on the sleeves; I feel it is redundant. So I would get rid of the sleeve logos for the Cardinals.

One other comment about the presentation: you are having some serious issues with the logos on the sleeves. Instead of shrinking them down like you are currently doing, just show half of the logo (for both team logos and the Nike swooshes). It looks like there are two cardinal heads and two swooshes on each sleeve.

Arizona flag like the previously or even just elements of it maybe?

Agreed, after looking back it a few times, made me think one critique is the star is def Cowboys-like. I'm going to look to move ahead to other teams and make same revisions on the ones I've done regarding the front/back views of the sleeves.

In a vacuum, I love it. In real life, the star makes me think of the Cowboys. At least they are no longer in the same division, but they are still at least some sort of regional rivals.

Dallas Cowboys:

Nothing necessarily "new" for these.

Same common concept theme of fixing the Cowboys color set by using only 1 shade of blue and silver. No need to rant about how ridiculous the Cowboys look in real life with mismatching colors and other random features.

These sets below are an updated and modified version of the 90's "double-star" jerseys.

The Cowboys will keep tradition by having the white jerseys as the "home" and navy as the "away".

Quick overview:

- One shade of navy blue throughout

- Regular metallic silver pants that match the helmet

Spoilers: I made the same set but instead of navy blue, I've swapped it out for royal blue.

New York Giants:

I have same common gripes on how the Giants' road jersey seems to be too red-heavy without any traces of blue so I fixed that issue on the road jersey along with making consistent striping patterns on the sleeves in general.

Brought back the old "Giants" word mark for the helmets and used the "NY" logo as the logo below the collar.

Also brought back the red alternate jersey and have white pants as an option for all 3 sets.
