Political Logos

A discussion of the merits of the logos, typefaces, signage, etc. of the candidates for the 2016 United States Presidential election, and not a discussion of the merits of the candidates themselves.

With the entrance of the first declared candidate for the 2016 Presidential election, we have our first official campaign logo:

It is already being compared to an upside-down burning flag, the Tinder logo, and a prison tattoo.

Lol. Man people will always find something to compare something else to. A burning flag seems like quite a stretch though

Im not sure if its a flame or a water drop, you could make the case for either but ill assume its a flame. Im not sure what thats supposed to symbolize. The type is political enough. Overall its a forgetable but typical politicians logo.

Another candidate, another flame logo:

He has also taken the step of releasing vector files for designers to use.

A Paul Rand-style logo for Rand Paul would've been a fun and completely unnecessary reference, but alas...

That's pretty clever. It could be executed better, as there is a lot of negative space around the letters, and the torch handle can get lost, but it's one of the more creative candidate logos I've seen in recent memory.

Gotham Ultra italic? absolutely love it! the torch idea is definitely graphically clever, but the flame is lacking. still, considering the nice type choice, concept, and good set of color swatches, it's a good politician's logo. it sets him apart from other GOP candidates by being more modern and memorable, unlike the traditional and expected choices paired with a confusing icon like in the Cruz logo .

i also really like the choice of just using RAND, a unique and very memorable name instead of his last name which is very common and "average"

heres what Milton Glaser had to say about it. . .

"Are we talking about Rand the candidate or Rand the corporation? Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing because the generic torch applies equally to either entity," he told Business Insider.

"While graphic designers will appreciate the fact that the interval between the 'A' and the 'N' forms the base of a torch, the average viewer will not make the connection, and the dash and flame sit above the word almost as though it was an accent mark. In short; no uniqueness, no memorability, no real purpose,"

It's a clever idea, and it's nice to see these first two logos attempt to move beyond the serif typeface with stars and stripes motif that has dominated for so long.

Are they perfect? Not at all. But they're interesting at least.

I get what Milton is saying about "Rand the candidate" or "Rand the corporation." I do think the addition of a subhead that said something to the effect of: "Paul Rand for President" yadda yadda would help complete this.

I think a "2016" under "RAND" or even a "'16" overlapping the D in RAND would help this poster a lot.

As for the flame, it could use some work as you all have mentioned. Right now, if they flip it, horizontally, make the bottom of the flame round instead of flat, and rotate it about 30o to the left, then it would look so much better. However, the rotation of the flame might make it just a hair too top-heavy.
