Oldschoolvikings' USFL update concepts, Pittsburgh Maulers added 5/23/15

I know this has been done quite a bit, but I absolutely love a great many of the old USFL designs, so I thought I'd throw my hat in to give it a try.

First, my favorite USFL uniform, and probably my favorite helmet of all time, the Boston Breakers. (Yeah, I know they were also New Orleans and Portland, but I'm sticking with the original.)

For comparison, here's the 80's version...

And my update...

I'm glad you picked the Breakers and Panthers, as they have two of the best helmet designs ever. Both teams look awesome. Great uses of unique striping that ties into the logo. I only have one issue with each team. For the Breakers, I'd use white pants instead of silver. I know the original team had silver pants, but they don't work with a white helmet. The Panthers road jersey could use some gold. I'd make the upper stripes gold to match the home uni. With the burgundy numbers, helmet and pants it would still be balanced.

I know a lot of people agree with you there... that when the helmet is white, you should never have pants that are any color other than white. I remember a fairly long debate in another thread about this involving the late 60's Chargers' uniform that used gold pants with the white helmet. I come down on the other side, personally. In certain circumstances, I love the look...

The key in all these cases is that the pants (although not matching the helmet) are still lighter than the jersey. To me, it's a nice quirk, as long as we don't see it overused.

On the other hand, if the pants are darker than the jersey, so the uniform gets progressively darker from helmet to pants?

Nasty.

Ok, here comes a new one.

The Washington Federals were a rather unremarkable USFL team. What I remember mostly is how weird most people thought their colors were. It seemed like their uniform was designed with a red/white/blue scheme in mind, but they ended up green and black. Still I kinda liked them... I'm a sucker for kelly green.

In their second season, they inexplicably added silver (at the time, it almost seemed like silver pants were a USFL requirement), basically recoloring all white areas in the season one uniform to silver.

Honestly,. I prefer the green and white uniform to the green and silver one, but with this concept I just thought the sliver helped. Also, since I started with the Breakers and Panthers, two teams famous for their large helmet designs, I'm continuing the trend here.

something about the pants stripe on the away looks very interesting with the silver and white, if you made the white on the pants black or green that would be much better.

Love that helmet for the Federals. Works very similarly to the Panthers. I see what you were going for with the uniforms, but I'm not 100% sold on the pants. Reminds me a lot of the Dallas Mavericks. I'd probably have to see it on a player to make a fair judgement.

What did they look like before?

Oh, hey... good point!

The wranglers had a few different looks in their short time. IMO, their first was best...

To be sure, it's a kind of dubious "best" as their best still was pretty bad... mismatched colors, three different stripe patterns... quite a mess. However, the helmet was gorgeous.

In year two, they switched over to red as their primary, but it was hard to tell because IIRC they always wore white... I don't think a red jersey ever saw the field. The pants were kind of fun, tho.
