Uniform matchups that never happened

Recommended Posts

We've seen a lot of instances of rare uniform matchups, but sometimes there are instances when certain jerseys coincide, but we never see them matched up head-to-head.

The one I remember the most was the 1997 Jets (last year of the horizontal logo era dating back to the 80s before they went retro in 1998) and the 1997 Broncos (first year post-Orange unis), but here's a few other examples:

The shortened 1995 NHL season had some instances of 'First year uniforms vs. last year uniforms' that never met due to no interconference games:

The Capitals changed their look for 1995-96 while the Flames/Blues had new unis for this season.

Having actually found the original 1994-95 pre lockout NHL schedule, Washington and Calgary were scheduled to play on November 1st/March 7th, Washington and St. Louis on October 25/February 6)

This was wasted on the Panthers...when a matchup against another similar-era throwback would have been great to see:

A color-on-color game with the Packers would have been great!

Or Bears:

They had a chance to wear them against the Steelers, but did not.

When's the last time the NFL had a color-on-color throwback game? I don't recall that ever happening, even in 2009 (AFL 50th) and 1994 (NFL 75th).

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

In 2009 the Cowboys and Chiefs both wore their colored throwbacks, and in 2002 the Cowboys and Redskins both did.

I know the Cowboys have never word their blue jerseys against the following teams, in which the other team wore white at home:

at Baltimore

at Chicago

at Cincinnati

at Detroit

at Green Bay

at Kansas City

at Minnesota

at Oakland

at Seattle

I think Detriot and New England did it on Thanksgiving one year.

EDIT- Yep.

If we are not including alternate jerseys, throwback jerseys, and "one-offs," I am having a tough time coming up with any for the NBA, without digging too hard. I am sure they are out there, though.

I checked the 2011-12 schedules, during the lockout, when some teams only played each other once (I think), and I couldn't find any.

Maybe if we researched the late-90s (1998-99, I think) lockout season, we could find some. I am almost positive there were some teams that only played each other once that season, which could lead to a uniform matchup "never happening" if it was an overlap season between the last year Team A had one identity and the first year Team B had another identity.

In 2014, Ole Miss could have worn the powder blues against Vandy, as suggested by the AD, but waited until the next game against Memphis to wear them. I think that the old school unis would have looked great against the black and gold of the 'Dores.

Oilers only played the Ravens twice...but never in their blue jerseys.

So one that never happened:

Oilers NEVER played the Carolina Panthers at all, so there's two more uniform matchups, home and road sets.

They did get to play the Jags in both sets, since they were in the same division for two seasons before changing to the Titans., and those games looked awesome.

edit: thanks to MJWalker45 for knowing they played the Ravens twice as the Houston Oilers.

Oilers and Ravens were in the same division until the Browns came back in 1999. They should've played twice as the Tennessee Oilers, once in white and once in blue. I don't remember them wearing white to start the season at home.

Per Wikipedia:

21SEP1997 Baltimore 36-10 @Tennessee

14DEC1997 @Baltimore 21-19 Tennessee

You're right, they played twice in '96 but I cannot find any images on Google of this matchup where the Oilers wore blue.

Intreresting note about the Tennessee Oilers too:

Memphis had made numerous attempts to get an NFL team and many people in the area wanted nothing to do with a team that would be lost in only two years—especially to longtime rival Nashville. Conversely, Nashvillians showed little inclination to drive over 200 miles (300 km) to see "their" team. As a result, attendance at the Liberty Bowl was disastrous: fewer than 18,000 fans came to the stadium to see the Oilers, a number smaller than the attendance figures the team was getting in Houston after they had announced the move, and smaller than the fan bases the USFL's Memphis Showboats and XFL's Memphis Maniax would draw to the same stadium (although this was larger than the attendance for the CFL's Memphis Mad Dogs).
