If youre comparing Las Vegas to Pittsburgh you never been to either.

I don't think anyone's comparing either city, but you can go out and get hammered and lose money in a casino the night before a game in Pittsburgh also.

Different beasts. Casino town cluture anywhere breeds unusual temptation, but in Vegas? It's completely unavoidable. You're literally surrounded by it in Vegas. Like, slot machines in Wal Mart/at the airport/etc kinda surrounded by it.

Yeah, Vegas hits you with GAMBLING! almost literally after stepping off the plane.

True but teams will be flying in and out of charter terminals which don't have slot machines and the teams can book rooms in non-casino hotels like Vdara or the Trump hotel. For the Golden Knights and eventually the Raiders, the club scene will be where we see players getting into trouble or slacking off from partying to much.

The entire purpose of Las Vegas (for visitors at least) is to go out and party and have fun.

No one would ever say the same for Pittsburgh. And there's a huge difference between the Bellagio and whatever casino is taking social security checks from chain smoking octogenarians in the rust belt.

Rick "Gamblor" Tocchet might be the new coach of the Coyotes. There is no way this can go wrong.

Certainly not at Gila River Casino Arena!

I hope their feet get held to the fire, on this one. I doubt it, though.

So with Les "I despise hockey" Alexander possibly selling off the Rockets could Houston land an NHL team in the near future?

Depends on if whoever buys them thinks a NHL team is more profitable than filling Toyota Centre dates with concerts or boat shows or whatever.

As I've been saying for awhile, any greater metro area of roughly 2 million, or more can get the NHL's attention. With a suitable arena and a prospective owner who can foot the bill, of course.

The Aeros did well enough that, assuming the arena roadblock is removed, I think the NHL would quit trying to hold team 32 for Seattle.

Houston, a city full of people who used to live somewhere else with a large black/Hispanic native population and exurban sprawl out the ass, has the profile of an absolutely terrible NHL market. I'm sure the league couldn't be more excited about being there.

A friend of mine had moved to Houston for a couple years before coming back to Atlanta, and she said there was absolutely no hockey vibe in Houston, both around town and at the games.

Houston seems like everything people would dock Atlanta for but worse. Even had their hockey team get evicted to make room for concerts, too.

The Suns are looking to renovate, rather than build.

That's not how it went down. I'm not claiming Houston is some untapped Hockey hotbed, but they had a solid AHL market going. Their final 8 seasons were all top 10, performance-wise, and their attendance was in an upward trajectory, until the announcement of the team leaving (their second to last season, they had the 5th best attendance, in the AHL). During their final 5 seasons they outperformed markets like Milwaukee, Providence, Rochester, Grand Rapids and Hamilton, at least twice.

That is even more impressive when you consider that they had more weeknight games than most teams. Les Alexander was known for blocking the Aeros out of the best non-Rockets dates, and asked for a ridiculous increase in their lease fees.

This article outlines some of the history, regarding Houston hockey.
