I knew that was Dave Lozo before even clicking the damn link. Every syllable he speaks is wrong.

He's also claimed in the past that he's played at a "high level" of hockey...does anybody know when and where he played? He speaks from the perspective of someone who hasn't.

1) Get rid of the salary cap. The salary cap unfairly depresses salaries and creates parity, the most boring thing in sports. I used to be a very big proponent of salary caps so everything would be "fair," but I was an idiot. If you own a team and want to spend $100 million on it, let's go. Can't keep up with the spending? Too bad, find a new way to win. I could do 10,000 words alone on this but a salary cap hinders a lot of fun things in sports, like trades, free agency, and the ability to earn so much money that I can eventually buy the Miami Marlins after I retire.

2) Get rid of the draft. My fallback here is "get rid of the draft lottery," but again, the draft unfairly suppresses earning ability. Rich people are only in favor of a free market as long as they're the ones that get to exploit it. Let's replace the draft with a recruiting system like in the NCAA, where if you make a good enough pitch to an available player, that player will come to your team. Sure, this favors big-market clubs but too bad.

It me, the card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America who wants more, not less, ruthless capitalism and eight-figure salaries, all in hopes of being more like the beloved NCAA

Maybe this isn't true and he just needs to adjust his voice, but he always comes across like he truly loathes hockey fans and as if he loathes hockey as a sport. He sounds like he'd rather be covering the NBA or the NFL, but got stuck covering hockey as a young reporter and can't get out now. I don't know how you could cover this sport so joylessly.

"Well don't read him then". I'm proud to say I haven't read a Lambert or Lozo piece this season. The only Wyshinski thing I've read was that stupid GM ranking he did. There's a real dearth of quality hockey coverage, which has led me to subscribe to The Athletic, which is actually pretty good (I ignore the Lozo articles).

The Columbus Blue Jackets have won 9 straight games so I'm expecting to see a hit-piece from one or both of the L's any minute.

No, I think it's meant to be serious, it just isn't serious because Dave Lozo wrote it, another dope who gets his marching orders from the Twitter hivemind. Fighting is bad, the draft is bad, white people are bad, liking the Original Six is bad, 69 is NICE, we know the song by heart at this point.

EDIT: lol he actually does throw his column to Twitter followers, unreal

Reading this week's Down Goes Brown grab bag and JESUS CHRIST IT'S LIKE THEY WANT THE LOZO TERRIBLE THINKPIECES TO BE EVERYWHERE

The other thing that irks me with Lozo is that you more or less can't find a hockey podcast outside The Bobcast, 31 Thoughts, or Steve Dangle that doesn't have him co-hosting somehow. "Oh cool, Down Goes Brown's finally got a podca... OH COME ON WHY'S LOZO IN THIS ONE TOO"

I had the same reaction. I can't listen to any podcast he's on. He's this awful combination of grouchy, smug, doesn't want to be there, and not funny, but thinks he is that makes him so unlistenable.

31 Thoughts I've found to be pretty good.

I can't tell whether you're talking about Lambert or Lozo, but it doesn't matter here nor anywhere because they're the same person across two bodies.

Anyway, NHL fandom has always been like growing up in a small town: you hate it and complain about it but will defend it to the death against outsiders who say what you say about it. We all love the game but hate the league, but it's coming from a weird sense of community that we get from being into this sport too much. But I think Hockey Twitter has taken that insularity to a new level, where it's nothing but bitterness. They hate the owners, management (who aren't their statistician friends), almost all the players (PK Subban is Our Favorite Boy or Our Large Adult Son or whatever else is a running gag, but everyone else is a rapist, racist, misogynist, addict, or otherwise detestable human being who dropped out of 8th grade), and most of all, they hate the other fans, who are unenlightened white supremacists with insatiable bloodlust that is destroying the brains and lives of the players...whom they also look down upon. I think part of it is the inherent Skinner-boxness of Twitter where you learn to hit the feeder bar and keep doing it, part of it is the cross-pollination with online culture-war spheres, but the end result is unbearable contempt for everything all the time, except for the NBA, which is perfect in every way and we should all aspire to be like. And I know all this because I was part of that scene, but the negativity got so overwhelming EVEN FOR ME that I had to start correcting for it. Of course, I started this very thread to chronicle the league's myriad ills, but if things were really as bad as the Lambert-Lozo crowd make them out to be, I wouldn't follow the league at all and it would be someone else's problem.

5) Leaving your feet to block a shot is a penalty. I hate when sports reward no-talent try-hards, and hockey rewards them more than any other sport. It boggles my mind when people get pumped about a fourth-line penalty killer sliding to block an Alex Ovechkin bomb from the face-off circle. Seriously? You don't want to see where that slapper was headed?

This would increase goals and reduce injuries. You can dive to take away the puck if you're in chase mode, but no more squaring up a shooter and sliding in front of the shot. Remember when John Tortorella took over the Canucks and people were excited about the Sedins blocking shots? The Sedins! Get out of here with this nonsense.

If I wanted to watch a sport where no one played defense, I would just flip over to TNT, and watch the NBA...

There's a huge element of sacrifice for the team that everyone enjoys, that comes from blocking shots... Dave should get a major for being idiotic...

Why does this stuff keep happening? What's funny about it? We could use a moratorium on the southern teams implying that any city in the Midwest, Northeast, or Canada is a frozen, crime-ridden hellhole. This only seems to flow south to north. I don't remember the Blackhawks doing a jumbotron feature on how terrible Edmonton is. Here, I'll praise the NBA for a change: I can't imagine Utah's event-ops trying to epic-bacon-troll the Grizzlies by saying Salt Lake City wouldn't have let Martin Luther King get shot.

Because despite the insistence of the southern fans here on this site? They really do have an inferiority complex compared to any NHL market north of the Mason-Dixon line.

It was originally about Lozo, but could apply to Lambert as well. Lambert's difference is he overtly takes himself seriously. Lozo takes himself seriously as well, but pretends he doesn't, which is worse.

I feel that insecurity and inferiority complex of the general lifelong hockey fan and I myself have been guilty of being the Hockey Arguer online and in school in earlier days and sometimes still in weak moments. The NHL is basically this Don Draper meme when it comes to the rest of sports, but I don't know why those talking the sport amongst ourselves have to carry that "everything sucks even things I like" attitude and that's why I don't read or listen to him. It's just so crabby all the time. I'd gladly do his job if he doesn't want it.

As far as twitter goes it's a great source of news and a terrible source for anything else. The L's are both Extremely Online Guys. I've been trying to get away from being an Extremely Online guy because it's not healthy and a couple twitter incidents happened in the last few days where people made some bad choices in pursuit of some fleeting attention. It reaffirmed that it's healthy to step away once in a while and talk to someone who isn't on twitter. Have you ever tried to explain a tweet to a non twitter user in real life? You sound like a dork and it's never funny. Have you ever tried to explain how you dunked on someone online? You sound like an axe-murder and need to be put on a watch list. I've gone through my list of follows and really cut down on people who spread constant negativity.

The Hurricanes have hired Rick Dudley to work with Don Waddell, after literally no one they were interested in wanted to be their GM. Disruptive Brain Genius Tom Dundon is building success through the 2010-11 Atlanta Thrashers front office.

They're following the "bolt the South to resurrect a beloved Canadian franchise" model.  Vive les Nordiques!

Head Coach Craig Ramsay and cynically padding the roster with 13th-forward black guys like Akim Aliu and Nigel Dawes can't be far behind.

In a related move, after promoting Ron Francis to president and then promoting him to president who doesn't have an office so he can just work from home, he's now been promoted to not having to work for the Carolina Hurricanes anymore:

It's been a long way down for the man who three months ago was considered one of the best general managers in the entire league (by writers whose friends worked for him). "Terminating a contract" in the NHL is what you do for players who want to move back to Europe, or smuggle bricks of Percocet across international borders.
