Thunder Bay Storm Logo (Unis Updated 2/4)

Here's a logo I created for a hockey team in Thunder Bay should a league ever decide to put a team there. Colors are navy, electric violet, and green. When doing this concept, I knew I wanted to utilize this shade purple/lavender/violet because it appears nowhere in sports and it's kind of the color you see with a lightning strike. I also went with a more realistic depiction of lightning because, well, lightning bolts look kind of dopey and cartoony to me. The landform underneath the storm is the Sleeping Giant, a prominent symbol in Thunder Bay which is featured on the city flag.

Let me know what you think by dropping off some C&C, specifically what you think about the stormcloud.

The color scheme is a little too 90's, and the logo looks clunky.

Favorites: Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, New York Rangers, New York Knicks, Cam Newton ND Irish

Least Favorites: New York Giants, New York Mets, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Eagles, OBJ

Exactly. In my opinion, you have too many elements to the logo. The cloud, the lightning, the hill, the wordmark, just chose one and stick with that. Maybe just the cloud and one or two lightning bolts?

I think you are right to a degree. The wordmarks were really just there so people would know the team I was doing. And I may have overdone it with the lightning bolts, so I'll take a couple off. I think getting rid of the hill would be a mistake, however, as it is the sole link to the city of Thunder Bay in this concept. Getting rid of it, in my opinion, reduces the logo to a rather bare and generic cloud and lightning.

As for colors, what would your suggestion be? I'm going for a more realistic depiction of lightning, which looks purple/violet in pictures, and the other two colors seem to work well with the purple color.

I'll probably post an update tonight or tomorrow, but I'm giving this a little bump for some more C&C as it went to the second page pretty quickly. C&C is greatly appreciated, for I am trying to improve my skills in logo creation but I can't really do that if I'm not getting any. It's kind of pointless then

I think it's a good start, but it feels a little disjointed to me. The hill adds the local identity so I wouldn't lose it totally. Two things that could be worth a try would be to make the gap between the cloud and hill smaller so the lightning appears to be striking the hill, and outlining the hill in lavender. That could help to better tie those two pieces together.

If you were to get rid of the hill, you could use the hill's shape as the basis for the cloud, that way it's still part of the identity just in a more subtle way.

A slightly darker shade of green may help to modernize the color scheme, but I think the Lavender and Navy go real well together so I would leave those as is.

I'll third that. Also, that sleeping giant kind of looks like a skyline, Make the lightning bolt more like Tampa Bay Lighting's logo which is simple.

If decide to go with simpler lightning could use lightning from a hocke team that predates Tampa Bay:

Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association has an interesting use of lightning in their logo:

If decide to continue in the style you started with I agree with others in that it with the wordmarks it looks cluttered. If want to include all the factors you have, the roundel idea that ren 69 suggested (or possibly oval shape) might work better. If not, at least part of the wordmarks (Thunder Bay?) should go.

If going with your realistic-like lightning, I think you could try a cloud not cut off so sharply across the bottom - at the minimum curved instead of pointed at the far ends.

Just spitballing some ideas off the top of my head.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Here's the update:

Some changes I made:

Obviously, I took ren69's suggestion and went with a roundel.

Eliminated wordmarks and a couple of lightning bolts.

Tweaked the lightning bolt and made the cloud more billowing and curvy.

New font (Union Gray).

Right now the sides of the roundel to me look a little bare and I might add some lightning bolts there in the future. But for now, I'll leave this as is and get some more comments on it

It's starting to come together now, I would eliminate the space under the landform by filling it in completely. I would make the cloud light purple & use the dark background to show the detail in it & probably shift it to the right & up a bit so only part of the cloud shows. Doing this will give your logo a more unified feel to it IMO.

Edit because I cut off the Sleeping Giant's head:

I get why you want me to fill in that space under the landform, but I think doing so sacrifices the overall look of the Sleeping Giant. If you look at pictures of it, it isn't the giant and then more land filled underneath it, but rather it's the giant and then Lake Superior. I did, however, fill it in just to see what it looks like, which can be found below:

The sleeping giant looks a bit "squished".

I think stretching the cirlce into an oval could help with that.

I played around with your post#9 today to this effect - tried with your darker green and the orginal kelly green in your first post. Could post the pics if you want.

Like the Lake Superior alternate logo but maybe you could have the lightning coming from the location of Thunder Bay which I believe would the second bay indentation to the left of where it currently is.

The latest version you posted is looking great. I think the circular look is working well, and the waves really add to the logo and better convey the local identity. I'm also digging the new secondary logo, though I concur that it would work better to have the lightning bolt coming out of where Thunder Bay is along the coast.

Does look a little blank on the right.

Would have lightning start at around the same spot but angle its way towards the bottom right corner

  • 6 months later...

I did some more work on this recently.  I didn't like that my previous font had descenders, so I switched to NW Rangers Light (thanks Conrad).  I reworked some of the waves in the roundel and filled some space with the second lightning bolt in the lake logo.  Oh, and I may or may not have made some uniforms to go with it:

Credit to Raysox for the jersey template.  This is my first foray into making hockey concepts, so I'm not extremely familiar with proper hockey uniform design other than what I have seen on the boards.  Went with a pretty simple and traditional striping scheme and a sleeve patch of the alternate logo.  That's all for now, would love to hear some C&C about this.
