Now that we're half-way through, we'll take a look back at the franchises that have come and gone in the last 25 years. Up first are the

Toronto Beavers

Founded: 1950

Division: Canadian (1950-57)

Home Arena: York Stadium

City: Toronto, Ontario

Leif Erikson Cup Runner-Up: 1 - 1952

Legacy Points: 13 (T-35th/44)

Although they had a few good seasons, the Toronto Beavers were never able to compete with cross-town rivals the Markham Tigers and had to fold after the 1956-57 season.

Great stuff. I love the historical analytics and retrospectives. Do you have any sort of all-time points system or legacy rankings where stuff like Championships are worth X points, runner-ups are worth X points, etc, to where you can really see where teams rank historically? I figure the Beavers are at the bottom of any list, with only a short life-span and with only a Finals loss as their high point.

I like that idea, I'll do that at the conclusion of the project. 1 point for each season, another for making the playoffs, 6 for a Cup win, 3 for being runner-up or something like that.

I would apologize for the fast pace, but this is stuff you've already seen. I want to get these teams up so we can move on to new work.

Next we have the Philadelphia Flyers. Although they were not a huge success on ice, the NHL wanted to expand into that market, so they were absorbed in 1967.

The financial woes from the previous season continued to plague the PAHL in the 1975-76 season with the Roberts Oil & Banking Corporation withdrawing all financial backing. Because of this, the Austin Texans were no longer able to afford to keep their star players and were only able to sign a skeleton crew. The franchise had to fold after only 14 games where they put up a dismal 1-14-2 record. The Brooklyn Americans, however, profited greatly from the fiscal issues, as their owners were able to afford to sign several star players recently released from their contracts. They finished with a league-best 57-18-6 record.
The 1976 playoffs began with the Quebec Nordiques sweeping the Syracuse Mohawks, and Brooklyn Americans beating the Virginia Minutemen in seven games. In the West, the Kalamazoo Checkers beat the San Jose Blades in five games, and the Seattle Orcas beating the Milwaukee Ales in seven. In the second round, the Orcas beat the Checkers in six games to earn their third consecutive trip to the Leif Erikson Cup finals, and the Nordiques swept the Americans to return to the finals.
The 1976 Leif Erikson Cup Finals featured a rematch between the Nordiques and Orcas, and everything seemed to be repeating itself until game seven, where the Orcas put up six goals against the stunned Nordiques to win their first Leif Erikson Cup.

The financial issues of the 1975-66 season continued and were amplified in the 1976-77 PAHL season in which 17 teams played 80 games.Although there were no
relocations or new teams, the Camp Drum Rangers were renamed the Fort Drum Rangers to reflect the new name of the Army installation. They also changed their main colors, a decision that would be unpopular until it was finally rectified several years later. The league became less competitive as teams with more money ended up with all the talent as there was no salary cap in place. The stacked Edmonton Oilers and Quebec Nordiques dominated their respective divisions each winning more than 50 games. The Barker Division which included Brooklyn, Virginia, Hartford, and Syracuse was unable to produce a single winning record and was therefore not represented at all in the 1977 playoffs.
Round one of the 1977 playoffs featured some good matchups, but none of the series went too long. The Edmonton Oilers handled the Regina Cyclones in six games. The Hamilton Hammers rolled over the Kalamazoo Checkers and the Fort Drum Rangers eliminated the Kingston Chiefs in five games. The Quebec Nordiques had no problems sweeping the Markham Tigers in a lopsided series. In the conference finals, Hamilton came back from being down two games to defeat the Oilers in seven, and the Nordiques knocked out the Rangers in five games to earn their third consecutive trip to the Leif Erikson Cup Finals.
The 1977 Leif Erikson Cup Finals were wild from the beginning. After going down two games to none, the Hammers found out that their owner had declared bankruptcy and folded the franchise. Although they would not be payed, the team decided to suit up for the final games which were free to the public. They rallied back and won the next four games to capture their second Leif Erikson Cup.
After the season, the Syracuse Mohawks and Denver Cowboys also announced that they were supsending operations indefinitely. Talks began with the NHL regarding a merger, but nothing definite was decided yet.
