Changes coming to Mississippi's flag?

In the wake of the long-overdue backlash to the continued presence of Confederate imagery in public spaces, Mississippi's Republican House Speaker is reviving the debate on whether to remove the Confederate saltire from their flag. Mississippi is the last state remaining with the Confederate battle flag incorporated into its flag's design.

In 2001, a referendum to change the flag to the following was defeated:

The proposal would have replaced the Confederate battle flag with a blue canton with 20 stars. The outer ring of 13 stars would represent the original Thirteen Colonies, the ring of six stars would represent the six nations that have had sovereignty over Mississippi territory (various Native American nations as a collective nation, French Empire, Spanish Empire, Great Britain, the United States, and the Confederacy), and the inner and slightly larger star would represent Mississippi itself. The 20 stars would also represent Mississippi's status as the 20th member of the United States. The referendum for a new flag was defeated in a vote of 64% (488,630 votes) to 36% (267,812) and the old flag was retained.

While I think the 13 outer stars are unnecessary because they weren't an original colony, I like all the stars equal up to 20, since as stated it represents Mississippi as the 20th member of the US.

It's a good looking flag. The CSA battle flag gives the current flag a disjointed look. This looks well incorporated.

Still think the flag from the 2001 referendum is too similar to the actual national flag of CSA.

Georgia removed the battle flag of CSA from their flag, but again their flag is still a clear nod to national flag of CSA.

I remember the flag being changed from the battle flag to that strange collage, meeting a ton of backlash, then being replaced by voters. I think that Georgia gets away* with using the actual "Stars and Bars" design because people don't know that the CSA's actual flag isn't the "rebel flag" and so it's never used by people to represent ...... "their heritage."

* it seems like any state that uses the battle flag is backing off of it very quickly. I'll be interested to see if Georgia is pressured into doing anything about the flag. The governor has already said he wants the license plates with the battle flag redesigned, but no word on the state flag.

Also on the current flag of Mississippi there's a thin white line under the battle flag, which makes the bad design worse.

I don't know how the flag will look like in the future,if changes will come to the flag.

For me,I would do like Georgia would and put the state seal where the CSA flag was,

The original post is a solid choice for Mississippi. Not perfect, but it'll do. It would immediately vault into the top half of well-designed U.S. state flags... which isn't saying much, but hey, what can you do?

Only thing is if they're going to make that change they apparently need to do so without consulting the electorate. Since the flag in the OP was defeated with 2/3rd of voters agreeing they'd rather have the current flag with the Confederate battle flag in the canton. I'm sure opinion has turned a bit on the matter, but I'd still be surprised if more than half of Mississippians would vote to eliminate it.

I think the proposed Mississippi flag is pretty sharp. But if the people who live in that State want to keep the current one, then they should keep it.

I would agree in most cases, but states have no business promoting Confederate imagery. It needs to be consigned to the dustbin of history; never forgotten, but never condoned.
