If they replaced the bowtie script with the arched script they have now and dropped the single-layer white SD in favor of the outlined sand-colored one, I'd be pretty happy. The khaki uniforms don't look nearly as bad as I remember, probably because I saw them most on the MVP Baseball video games on CRT TVs. They did look "pee-soaked" under those conditions, but I think we're ready for beigeish grey again.

They also looked kinda s****y because they so often paired the old navy blue alternate (which is probably my favorite Pads jersey of all time) with the khaki pants on the road. It wasn't an inherently bad look or anything, but it just got so terribly old. It looked like a bunch of Wal Mart employees running around a baseball field after awhile.

The more I see of the Padres last set, the more I think it was a mistake that they ever went away from it. It was probably the most well rounded the Padres have ever looked, and the ONLY time they've ever looked really sharp in navy IMO.

I don't buy the "if brown were so popular the Padres would have returned to it already" argument. Powder blue, be it in modern alternate or throwback form, is incredibly popular among the Chargers faithful. Ownership prefers navy though, so navy's staying the primary.

Never underestimate the ability of a stubborn rich guy to go "screw what everyone else wants."

But the Chargers have been owned the same family for thirty years. The Padres have had four owners since 1990 and they've all put out their own blue jersey.

The key point here is 1990. The 90s being notable because that's when the navy trend really picked up steam. The idea that four ownership groups would all embrace navy from 1990 until now doesn't seem far fetched. It's the trendy, safe colour to go with as far as baseball goes.

My only thing is the sand-on-white SD looked like a big smudge from more than five feet away. It's why I hope they don't go with yellow-on-white for the new look.

I too didn't like them for the pee-soaked look. You may have found a photo shot in perfect light that actually looks pretty good. But, I don't recall them looking that good in person or on TV.

You mean this beauty? Yeah couldn't agree more. It's my absolute favorite Padres jersey. I was crushed when they retired it.

What, I'm not the only one that loved the khakis? 'Cause, damn, I loved the khakis.

But you're right about the bowtie. Also, I didn't remember the Padres script on those alts being such a mess... but it is.

Count me in as a mid 00's wavy fan. The browns are decent, & would make excellent 3rds, yet full time would get lost in the noise.

There's something a little nautical about that wavy era which suits my perception of SD.

Yeah the '91's are still my favorite standalone uniform the Padres have worn. They were unique for the time and were classy as all hell. That said, the '04's were the best overall unified set which had a very San Diego appropriate theme with the nautical tie in and were both somewhat unique and classy looking with the liberal inclusion of the sand/khaki. And overall it tied in brilliantly with the ballpark which reflected the team's colors exactly. The loss of the khaki in retrospect was not to their advantage.

That said, now that it's gone they seem to be favoring bringing something a bit bolder back with the yellow. And frankly if they're going to include a brown uniform on Fridays as has been strongly rumored, yellow makes perfect sense as a unifier as it could work with both blue and brown equally well as an accent.

The P and A of that script really needed help. I remember the designer trying to say the P was a sail boat but, come on, that's a stretch and your team isn't called the Sails. Just make a nice P and A to match the rest of the typeface.

Probably not supposed to be a "typeface" per se. If I'm not mistaken it's supposed to be more organic looking than that. Hence the P isn't quite the same. I sign my name in a similar manner with my first letter being of a completely different writing style than the rest of my name.

Yup. That's the one. Great jersey, and my favorite part was the swinging friar on the sleeve who was wearing BROWN robes. That was such a nice touch.

I still think brown and gold is the best solution for the Padres, but if they insist on navy, that's the set for them.

Actually he wasn't wearing brown robes on the logo strangely. They were a maroon. Never understood that one myself. Friars wear brown, grey, black, even blue occasionally. Maroon, not so much. That said, I always liked the 90's/early 2000's friar better than the current and original one. The 90's one didn't look like conehead.

On this page, someone pointed out something I'd not picked up on...that the All-Star logo incorporates the bowtie design...I hope that's not a sign of things to come.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

I was surprised to find out that the friars and priests that settled San Diego for the Spanish wore grey, not brown, robes. Grey would actually be the most appropriate color for the mascot I suppose.

You know, that is a good looking hat. I would buy that. That doesn't look like any other team in baseball, and you are right, the gray could be used as THE color for the Friar's clothing. (They could say that it is historically correct.) If they moved ahead with that, I would be ok with it.

I think the only problem is that they have already introduced that color as "battleship gray", so it sounds like they are staying nautical with their theme. I think that ship has sailed as far as putting the Friar in gray. If they had done that, say, 15 or 20 years ago, and stuck with it , I don't think we are even talking about this, but instead, we got MaroonFriar back in the 90's.

Then, they got all sandy, and beachy, and still kept MaroonFriar:)

I think they need to do something with the Friar logo to give it some life, and I hope that they put him in brown, do the brown alternate, and rip off the knob for a few decades.

Nobody seems to point out that the Padres can't decide if they're representing friars/priests, the beaches, or the US Marines.

Maybe sticking to one identity will help determine which colors/look is best for once.

In my mental image of what the city of San Diego represents, each Padres look has a fit to a degree but muddling the three together is not helping. Maybe they should go with a Friar serving in the Marines while relaxing on the beach?

Problem is the Padres do represent the Padres (history of San Diego), the coastal oceanic setting (where SD is in the world), and the military (given the city's close ties to the military). And given the Padres comparatively small market they need to try and appeal to the maximum number of people possible. Hence they try to in every way they can.
