I'm a fan of the local team, pretty new to graphic design, but I spent a ton of time with it, so hoping it turned out alright. The wildrose (also known as the arctic rose) is a symbol of the province, which would be a big middle finger to our provincial rivals of calgary, which are currently without a team. The rabbit is very popular with the local ultras, which they refer to as the "rally rabbit" - from a game early in the clubs history when the team was down 3 - 0 and a white rabbit ran onto the field(generally the rabbits are mostly brown by summer) and the team ended up rallying to win 4 - 3. I realise the font is also a bit "playful" but it is inspired by the city of edmonton logo that is on all of the city vehicles and entrance to the city.

I realize that there are a lot of colours, but I couldn't have thought of a way to go without any of them. Heres the current logo for comparison:

Thanks in advance for any constructive criticism!

New to this site but it seems like a really good community :)

I can see you've been busy posting this logo in different places — Reddit, Facebook; even came across one of your posters on a bus shelter on 124th Street — so here goes:

• The wild rose (and not an "arctic rose," as the bus shelter poster called it) is a nice touch, but it needs to be toned down some. FC Edmonton has built an identity around their blue-and-black colour scheme, and having a pink flower so predominant really relegates that to the background. Same with the wheat stalks — it's a nice idea to tie into Alberta, but needs to be done more subtly. Adding so many colours into the mix really dilutes the graphic identity of the team.

• Re: the use of the City of Edmonton's lettering for "Edmonton" — I can see why you would go there — civic pride and all — but again it muddies the identity of the team. I mean, that's the City's traditional, trademarked logo — it doesn't make sense for them to license it out for the soccer team to use and cause confusion over whom it's referring to when people see it. And it's the same for the team. They can be proud to be from Edmonton, but it's in their best interests to have a separate, distinct identity.

• The rabbit is clever, but I think that's something the supporters have latched onto and want to keep as their own. It could be a secondary logo with a neat story — like, say, the Oakland Athletics' white elephant — but when it comes to the primary, I think less is more. You don't want to cram too many elements in there and jumble everything up.

I can respect where you're coming from, although I disagree with some of what you've said. As far as wild rose goes, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosa_acicularis, arctic rose is another name for the same plant, and attaching it to the identity of the wild rose party, as you said, seems questionable.

But come on, it's the provincial symbol! How do you not use it. Especially with calgary without a team?? If I know anything, its that sports in Alberta are centered around the rivalry between the two cities. This is the clearest shot across the bow to a team that doesn't yet exist in Calgary, and hopefully might inspire their citizens to support a team. I'm not a great graphic designer, but execution aside, I really don't understand the resistance I'm getting from some(not most) Edmontonians.

As far as the font goes, as a former city worker, I personally truly began to appreciate the beauty of this city whilst working for the parks department of the city, so I took a chance, and reactions have been mixed, but I would be open to changing it. I can understand the city not wanting to give it away, but you have to admit, it looks decent.

But here's the thing, you say the team needs to latch onto their own identity, but what exactly is that identity?? If there was a solid concept, like the oilers or the eskimos, I'd have nothing to talk about. We know soccer teams don't always have team names, but that doesn't mean they don't have team flavour. See Spurs, gunners, Red devils, Hammers, Saints. All I see for symbols are "Canada" and "Soccer", which currently don't really resonate with the average Edmontonian.

I am a very passionate fan. I will support this team whatever it does. But I think at the very least there needs to be a discussion about their identity. I've yet to see anyone out in public wearing FC Edmonton swag, and that is a problem to me.

Go Eddies.

I honestly just want the team to sell more swag and be embraced by this city. COME ON THE RABBIT IS SO DAMN COOL! LET THE TIER 2 FANS HAVE IT!! But yea like I said, I'm new to graphic design, so please keep this in mind when critiquing. Its more the ideas I wanted to get out there.

With all due respect, you should be able to execute your ideas to a certain extent if you are set on posting them in forums such as this one. I'm not saying you did or didn't execute your ideas, I'm just suggesting that you not use your lack of experience as a graphic designer as an excuse.

That's fair. My point was more to generate a discussion about the concepts, rather than critique the execution, but personally I like the look and I think it turned out decently. Perhaps I got a little though defensive and I apologize. I spent a lot of time on it and literally learned graphic design to do it, so it's somewhat precious to me :P
