New Fictional Sports League: United Reflex League (Nashville/Arizona/Portland Logos - 3/4/16)

Hey all, I got this idea a while back for a new sport to play (well, modified from an existing sport at least) and I thought it could be fun (plus good design -practice) to take it and build a league concept around it, so here we go!

The sport is called Reflex. It is a modified form of Tchoukball (click the link to see a highlight reel), where teams score points by throwing a ball against a rebound net and having it hit the ground before the defense can catch it. The sport has elements primarily of ultimate and handball. Games are played on a hardwood court with walls around it the size of a standard hockey rink.

Some major rules are:

* 6 Players on the court for each team.

* Player with the ball cannot take more than two steps.

* Player with the ball cannot hold onto it more than 5 seconds.

* Either team can score off either rebound net when ball is in their possession, but must complete a minimum of three passes before a shot is attempted.

* If the offense drops the ball, steps in or has the ball land in the red zone, commits a penalty, or allows the defense to intercept the ball in they lose possession.

* If the defense catches the ball off the rebound net, no points are awarded to the offense and the defense gains possession.

* Contact is not allowed, and the defense cannot enter the forbidden zone. Major defensive penalties result in a penalty shot for the offense. Minor penalties result in a player spending 1 minute in the penalty box.

* Hockey-style substitutions.

Scoring:

* 1 Point - Ball rebounds off net and hits ground in 1-Point Zone

* 2 Points - Ball rebounds off net and hits ground in 2-Point Zone

* 3 Points - Ball rebounds off net and hits ground beyond the 2-Point Zone

* Reflex - After the offensive player bounces the ball off the rebound net, a teammate catches the ball and immediately throws it off the rebound net again, after which is hits the ground in one of the scoring areas. Worth 3 Points + Points corresponding to where the ball hits the ground (so if 2nd throw bounces and lands in the 2-point zone its worth a total of 5 points).

Team locations (will be a 20 team league), names and logos will be unveiled in the coming days, but here is a diagram of the playing surface for the United Reflex League. A larger version of the league logo will be posted next. C&C is appreciated, enjoy!

These teams are posted so far (in order of post date): Austin, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Omaha, Grand Rapids, New Orleans, Albuquerque, San Jose, Columbus, Orlando, San Diego, Denver, Chicago, Charlotte, Oklahoma, Utah, Hartford, Nashville, Phoenix, Portland

I'm also going to add secondary logos and uniforms to the posts linked to above as they are made for easy locating, in addition to their own dedicated posts.

Thanks for the positive comments so far!

This definitely caught my interest. Handball is pretty fun to play once in a while, and you seem to have all the rules of the sport nailed down. Out of curiosity, did you make that court template or edit the professional dodgeball coalition court?

Looking again I realize I had seen that thread a while back but just forgot they had a similar court design; wasn't intending it to come out that close to their's. I made the court using a stock image of a hardwood floor for the surface and drew in the rest myself.

The URL is now pleased to officially unveil our first league logo. We're going for an aggressive, kinectic design to reflect the style of play the league hopes to promote. Again, the feedback so far is appreciated; enjoy!

Just make the shadow color less bold than the letters color. That's a cool logo

Thanks! I took your advice and toned down the blue shadow. It isn't a huge change but I think it does help.

The game looks really fun. Question: Only use one side of court?

Whichever team has possession of the ball can use the rebound net on either side of the court to score. There could be times where the action sticks to one side for a while, but at other times it could go back and forth pretty quickly and regularly.

Here is the list of cities teams will play in and the league alignment. One goal of the league starting out was that, with the exception of one team in each division, no team would play in a city with more than two teams in the 'Big 4' sports leagues. This was done to gain a combination of strong media outlets without having too many teams competing in overcrowded sports markets. Team names and logos will be coming soon!

**EDIT** Updated list to correct a misspelling and move San Antonio to Albuquerque - 7/22

WHOA. Tone down that league logo. Please. Using that font for the Acronym is fine, but using that font for the full league name? It's one of the most difficult fonts to read. Possibly of all time. If I were you, I'd nix the blue shadow entirely. It takes away from the logo - it's one of those "if it doesn't add, it detracts" things for me. Keep it simple.

Most of these locations are good, but you have 2 Texas teams. Austin and San Antonio seem really close together for two separate teams in the same division. I would drop Austin then add Albuquerque to have teams in all of the states in the southwest. I really like the presentation of this and I'm excited to see more!

Milwaukke is not atlantic.

Austin is not pacific.

Austin is farther west than the other teams in the South division, so therefore they are in the Pacific league. And I'm really looking forward to this. Maybe it's the next Yakball

Thanks for the interest so far everyone! I think I'm going to come up with an alternative league logo design based on some feedback I've gotten and see which version works out better.

Albuquerque was on the fringe, and if inspiration doesn't come to me for San Antonio I might boot them out for Albuquerque. Austin I already have done some work on their logo and stuff that I'm pretty happy with so I'd keep that one over San Antonio.

No east coast teams?

I did include Hartford, CT as a sort of East Coast Team and I considered Boston over Chicago for the major market in the division, but most of the East Coast cities have a bunch of teams and I was trying to mainly focus on mid-major markets.

Depending on how well this series goes, I may eventually create additional 'expansion' teams in some of those other markets (like Philadelphia for example). I just don't want to promise a ton of teams right off the bat.
