This is essentially the same uniform they wore in 1994 for the league's 75th anniversary, without the sock stripes.

This is Nike's press release:

GREEN BAY PACKERS GO OLD SCHOOL WITH NEW NIKE ALTERNATE UNIFORM

Tradition. History. Success. These words define the Green Bay Packers. The Packers own the most championships (13) in National Football League history, and since its founding in 1919, have honored tradition with a distinctive green and yellow uniform aesthetic.

Today, the Packers reveal a new Nike alternate uniform replicating the teams 1937 design, which has not been worn on the field since 1994. The Packers have won two championships in this uniform that navy blue and gold jersey [sic], the Packers predominant color scheme over their first three decades; and their design will include a gold yoke across the shoulders, the distinctive feature of their uniforms from 1937-49. Completing the throwback uniform will be faded gold pants and navy socks.

The fan jerseys will be available for purchase on Nike.com and in select retailers beginning today.

I love throwing back to this uniform, but it's such a poor reproduction of the shoulder yoke.

I agree about the sock stripes.

The Packers have often taken a keep-it-simple approach to the helmets, stripping off the logos and Braisher stripes but not replacing the facemask.

Obviously, the original uniforms didn't include masks. So there's no historical precedent. And green was an official Packers color then, even though they didn't wear it on the uniform.

Green was apparently on the numbers of the 1939 Away uniform, so the green facemask works. Packers last wore these uniforms for three straight weeks in the 1994 season, and an Away version for a Halloween game against the Bears which was one of the first NFL games I ever saw on TV as a kid.

A very rainy night in Chicago - I remember it well.

Also gave us this amazing Halloween prank from OT Ken Ruettgers:

As for the green, back in the day the NFL used to have approved and league-authorized color schemes. The Packers' was "navy, gold and green" into the 1940s even though they hadn't actually worn green on their primary uniforms since the white-with-green-number alternates of 1939. Green would become big again in the 1950s after Curly Lambeau left.

The 1950s were a time of great upheaval. A parade of coaches came through, and then as now the first thing each did was change the uniform. Then Vince Lombardi locked his in and nobody can change it again. :P

That one is unique, though; one of the few times they didn't wear any gold at all.

Kicking into the wind that night was, to use a buzzword from 10 years ago, epic.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

I like them except for the white undershirt (and green facemask but I understand they can't change that). Would prefer a navy undershirt to match the jersey.

They've been able to switch to grey facemasks in the past, so I'm still holding out hope that they do with these.

It's where I sit.

I think it's time they just came up with a modern alternate. There are some great concepts that have been done on here using their current uni design, but with some new elements such as white or green pants, and white or green helmets. I know from a marketing standpoint they probably want a new jersey to sell, but I'm sure they could come up with something that doesn't stray far from their traditional design. Personally, I just don't think any of these throwbacks look good in navy/gold. Maybe they could even come up with a fauxback look using green instead of navy. I think that would look a lot better.

A modern alternate? Ugh. No, thanks.

I'm happy with them honoring their history (especially since the NFL has this generally myopic view of anything before the late 1960s), but that's the only time I want the Packers out of their classic uniforms. When your regular look is that good, you don't need and shouldn't have an alternate.

As for the facemasks, I too would prefer gray. But the green is subtle enough that it doesn't bother me.

EDIT: It looks alright, but I sort of agree with the admiral. A lot of the alts they come out with are just kind of a "hey here's a throwback, let's have 'em wear this". Maybe they'd be better off with just two uniforms.
